Biography

Valiant Comics

He was introduced as a powerful necromancer with ambitions tied directly to death and decay. In his earliest actions, he was shown orchestrating mystical events from afar, using his mastery of dark magic to influence mortals and superhumans alike. He communed with forces beyond the living world, drawing strength from the grave itself and preparing his entry into conflicts among Valiant’s heroes. His focus lay on ensuring that his presence was felt even before he was confronted directly, employing spells that caused widespread deathly corruption while leaving no doubt that a darker power had entered the stage. (Solar, Man of the Atom v1 #10) Darque took a more direct role, revealing his skill in bending others to his will. He summoned the dead, conjuring spirits from the grave to both defend him and carry out his schemes, their spectral forms moving at his command. His actions demonstrated that he was not simply a conjurer but also a strategist, setting traps that leveraged his knowledge of both sorcery and human weakness. Heroes who opposed him were forced to navigate his twisted illusions and necromantic constructs, which blended reality and horror into disorienting battlegrounds. Darque himself appeared calm and calculating, his power only matched by his ruthless efficiency in dismantling those who challenged him. (Solar, Man of the Atom v1 #11) Darque’s later on revealed the scope of his ambition and the depth of his connection to death. He unleashed vast torrents of necromantic energy that reshaped the battlefield, turning the environment into a reflection of his power where the dead walked and the living faltered. His activities revolved around attempts to expand his dominion, feeding on souls and siphoning life to amplify his own strength. Even when faced with overwhelming opposition, he displayed confidence born from the knowledge that death itself was his ally. His actions underscored that his plans extended beyond mere personal gain—he sought to position himself as the master of all things tied to mortality. (Solar, Man of the Atom v1 #12)

Nicodemo Darque was an albino male human born in 1812 alongside his twin sister Sandria in Louisiana where their birth killed their mother. The pair were raised alone by their power-hungry magician father who trained them in the mystical arts from a young age. During this time, the siblings grew close but during this time their father sought to use the twins as the focus of a spell that would transport him to another world called Lyceum where he intended to become a god. For this ritual, Darque had magical sigils tattooed onto his skin whilst his sister cast the spell into the other plane with this being a painful process. Nicodemo was said to had been horrified at the sight of his sister being in such pain and gathered all his magical strength as well as the life around him with this killing the twin's father. Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Master Darque was a tall, imposing human male whose features projected both nobility and corruption. His skin was pallid, his eyes dark and deep-set, and his hair long and black, often falling loosely around his shoulders. His attire carried an aristocratic yet sinister style, a dark robe or coat that suggested both wealth and ancient tradition. Runes and occult symbols often adorned his garb, acting as both ornamentation and conduits for his sorcery. His bearing was regal, his posture straight, and his expression cold and calculating, all combining to create the aura of a man who had embraced the darkness of death as both shield and weapon. (Solar, Man of the Atom v1 #10)

Darque’s personality was marked by ruthless ambition, cold intelligence, and an utter lack of compassion. He viewed others not as equals but as pawns, tools to be used, broken, or discarded in pursuit of his greater goals. His speech was calm and deliberate, carrying the assurance of one who believed his mastery of death placed him above the living. Unlike more chaotic figures, he was disciplined and controlled, preferring precise manipulation over reckless force. This detachment from morality and empathy allowed him to pursue goals that would horrify others, and his absolute focus on dominion through necromancy left him immune to appeals of reason or mercy. (Solar, Man of the Atom v1 #10)

Powers and abilities

A master of magic in Ninja v3 #26.

Master Darque’s powers were rooted in his identity as a necromancer of unmatched skill. He drew energy directly from death, allowing him to summon and control spirits, animate corpses, and drain the life force from the living. His sorcery could reshape reality within his sphere of influence, creating zones where the boundary between life and death collapsed. Darque himself was resistant to harm, as his ties to the underworld made him difficult to kill and often allowed him to regenerate or endure attacks that would fell mortal men. His powers were not limited to combat; his necromancy allowed him to spy through the dead, manipulate events at a distance, and establish dominion wherever death had touched. (Solar, Man of the Atom v1 #11)
