Biography
Pre-Crisis
Mark Desmond was a male human who was a frail youth, but also a genius-level chemist. He invented a serum that would affect his endocrine and pituitary glands, making him big and strong, but he never bothered to test it before using it on himself. He did grow into a superhumanly powerful giant, but his mental development regressed to that of a small child. The brute's criminal brother Roland sent him off to commit robberies and the press dubbed him Blockbuster. He encountered Batman II, and was ordered to destroy him by Roland. Somehow Blockbuster recognized Batman as Bruce Wayne, the man who had rescued him from drowning in quicksand years ago. This calmed down Blockbuster and he simply walked away from the fight. (Detective Comics v1 #345)
As Blockbuster walked into the waves to meet his demise, he was spotted by the Outsider, a mysterious villain who had control over matter, and wanted to destroy Batman. Intending to use Blockbuster as a pawn he saved him from drowning, parting waves and leading him to an underground cave to recover from his battle with Batman. He eventually sent Blockbuster on Batman, who removed his mask, knowing Blockbuster would never hurt Bruce Wayne. Outsider used his matter manipulation powers to return the mask to Batman's face, and keep it there. Batman was battered by his foe, but saved himself from death by impersonating the voice of Roland Desmond, Blockbuster's brother, and the only human whose commands he responded to. After Blockbuster wandered off Batman painted his mask with a calcium compound that would give him Roland's image when exposed to calcium light. Batman and Blockbuster had another confrontation at the Gotham Museum, and Robin used a flashlight to shine calcium light on Batman's cowl. Outsider was watching the fight, hidden in shadows, and used his powers to fling artifacts at Robin, knocking the flashlight from his hand, and rendering him unconscious. Blockbuster attacked Batman, knocking him cold, and left. The Outsider placed Batman in a coffin lined with radioactive material, and prepared for his foe's death. Blockbuster was dazed, and returned to the museum to ensure he'd defeated Batman, and not Roland. Seeing the Outsider he attacked, and his crazed mind could not be controlled by the villain. Batman broke free from the coffin, allowing Outsider to escape, and using the calcium compound that melted onto his hand, making it extremely hard, he took down Blockbuster with one chop to his neck, his one weak point. Batman handed Blockbuster over to the Alfred Memorial Foundation in hopes of curing him, and advised Blockbuster's caregivers to wear Bruce Wayne masks to soothe the savage. (Detective Comics v1 #349)
Desmond resurfaced when Amos Fortune manipulated him into attacking the Justice League. His actions in this issue included smashing through reinforced barriers and battling Superman and Green Lantern head-on. He lifted massive pieces of machinery, hurled them as weapons, and tore apart structural supports to trap the heroes under falling debris. Desmond fought with primal ferocity, showing no hesitation as he waded into combat against multiple League members. His simple obedience to Fortune’s commands made him an effective tool, but his raw power and unpredictable nature nearly turned him into a greater liability. The League ultimately subdued him through coordinated effort rather than direct strength. (Justice League of America v1 #46) Desmond continued under Fortune’s influence. His actions were defined by unrelenting brute force, charging headlong into battles with reckless abandon. He tore through walls, ripped vehicles apart, and swatted away attackers with overwhelming strength. During the battle with the Justice League, Blockbuster demonstrated stamina by absorbing Green Lantern’s energy constructs and Wonder Woman’s strikes without faltering. His rampage culminated in a destructive assault that left much of the battleground in ruins before the League subdued him once again. Desmond’s sheer physicality remained his defining trait, as he exhibited little strategy or restraint beyond following orders. (Justice League of America v1 #47)

Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Mark Desmond was transformed by his serum into a towering figure with immense muscle mass and hulking proportions. His skin appeared thick and coarse, and his head seemed disproportionately small compared to his massive shoulders and torso. Often depicted in simple, torn clothing due to his bulk, Desmond resembled a brute more than a man, with a perpetually grim or vacant expression. This stark contrast to his former thin and bookish scientist self underscored his transformation. (Detective Comics v1 #345)
In personality, Desmond was portrayed as simple-minded, childlike, and easily manipulated following his transformation. Once a brilliant chemist, the serum stripped away his intellect, leaving him with the mentality of a confused child. He was quick to anger when provoked, lashing out destructively, but he also demonstrated a trusting and docile side toward those he associated with kindness. (Detective Comics v1 #345)
Powers and abilities
In abilities, Desmond possessed superhuman strength, durability, and stamina as a result of his serum-altered physiology. He could lift and throw vehicles, smash through reinforced structures, and endure physical attacks from even metahuman opponents without serious harm. However, his transformation came at the cost of his intellect, leaving him reliant on simple emotions and external influence to direct his actions. His immense bulk made him nearly unstoppable in close combat, though his lack of strategy made him vulnerable to clever opponents (Justice League of America v1 #46)
