Biography
Origin
Manfred Mota
Mota served in the U.S. army during the 1940s, but his psychotic obsession with causing explosions led to him being discharged. After stealing components from Garrick Labs, he designed a battlesuit and named himself the Atom Smasher. He went on a rampage in Keystone City, but was halted by Flash I. He swore revenge, and devoted his time in jail toward designing new weaponry. Decades later, he reappeared, now named Professor Fallout, and learned about the second Flash, Barry Allen. Assuming this Flash was the same one who put him into prison, Mota traveled to Central City and held the city ransom with a neutron bomb where he debuted in his new identity as Professor Fallout. Eventually, Mota battled and was apprehended by Barry Allen. After another lengthy prison term he designed a new battlesuit powered by parts stolen from Elysian Fields Nuclear Facility and named himself Fusionn. He again came after the Flash, not realizing that the hero currently going by the name was actually Flash III (Wally West). After defeating Flash III he realized that this young man was not his mortal enemy, so de decided to level Central City to exact his revenge. With the help of scientists from Elysian Fields the Flash III defeated him, and Fusionn's battlesuit exploded. This explosion caused a reaction that would mutate his body over the course of hundreds of years, and he emerged in the year 2645 as Mota, a being made of living plutonium, and bent on mindless rampaging. After killing off half of Central City he was confronted by the Flash John Fox, who used Flash II's Cosmic Treadmill to transport Mota to the year 50 billion A.D., at which point Mota's body decayed into lead. After 700 years, Mota's schemes and his life finally came to an end. (Flash Special v1 #1)
Manfred Mota began as a brilliant but unstable scientist whose obsession with antimatter experiments led to his downfall. While working with volatile energy fields, Mota suffered a catastrophic accident when his own antimatter experiments went awry. Instead of killing him, the explosion altered his cellular structure and infused his body with antimatter-based energies. The accident disfigured him and left him radiating a deadly energy field that he could not fully control. Seeking revenge for his ruined life, Mota turned his wrath toward the Justice Society of America, whom he blamed for interfering with his work and career. (Showcase ’94 v1 #11)
His path of vengeance came to focus particularly on Hourman (Rex Tyler) and later on his successor, Rick Tyler. Mota clashed with Rex multiple times, his antimatter powers making him a dangerous foe who could destabilize or disintegrate matter upon contact. However, Rex’s ingenuity and use of Miraclo allowed him to resist Mota’s assaults and drive him back. Mota’s obsession with the Tylers only grew after these defeats, and he began to plot longer-term revenge against Rex’s family. (Showcase ’94 v1 #12)
Years later, Mota resurfaced as an even greater threat when he transferred his vendetta to Rex’s son, Rick Tyler, the second Hourman. Mota attempted to kill Rick using his enhanced antimatter abilities, unleashing waves of energy that could unravel anything they struck. Despite his overwhelming power, his lack of stability and his overconfidence often left him vulnerable to counterattacks. In their battle, Rick managed to overcome him, demonstrating the growth of his own abilities and cementing his place as his father’s successor. This confrontation left Mota badly weakened and further cemented his role as a recurring adversary of the Hourman legacy. (Hourman v1 #1)
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Manfred Mota was depicted as a grotesque figure, his body visibly warped by antimatter exposure. His form often appeared unstable, crackling with energy, with a corpse-like pallor that made him look half-dead. Later depictions gave him a more armored or containment-suit look to highlight his radioactive, unstable condition. (Showcase ’94 v1 #11)
Mota was obsessive, vindictive, and consumed by his desire for revenge against the Tylers. His once-brilliant mind became twisted by his accident, leaving him unstable and incapable of moving beyond his grievances. Unlike some villains, his motivations were deeply personal, tied to his hatred of Hourman rather than to larger ambitions. (Hourman v1 #1)
Powers and abilities
In powers and abilities, Mota’s exposure to antimatter gave him a highly destructive suite of abilities. He could generate and project bursts of antimatter energy, destabilizing or disintegrating matter on contact. His body emitted a harmful radiation-like field, making him dangerous to approach directly. However, his powers were unstable and often left him weakened or vulnerable after extended use, keeping him from ever fully mastering them. (Showcase ’94 v1 #12)
