Biography
Malebolgia was a Demon lord
Originally, he had been the creation of the previous ruler of the Eighth Sphere of Hell named Leviathan. His creator was noted to had create him from a substance named Necroplasm. Eventually, Malebolgia killed his master and took over as ruler of the Eighth Sphere. Over 70,00 thousand years ago Malebolgia was formed from rivers of Necroplasm by a great demon and past ruler of hell. Malebolgia however proved to be too powerful and betrayed his master; killing him and taking the throne as the new ruler of hell. Since then he has taken it upon himself to destroy God and Heaven. During his preparation he created an army of Hellspawn to challenge heaven. However they lacked a general so he began testing a select few so as to see their worthiness of becoming his general. However none proved up to the task until he came across spawn. Malebolgia made a deal with Jason Wynn to get rid of Al Simmons in exchange for Psychoplasm.
Malebolgia came before Spawn was confronted with the truth of his resurrection and the nature of the Hellspawn mantle. Malebolgia revealed himself within a surreal, hellish landscape, towering above Spawn with a grotesque and monstrous visage. He taunted the former soldier, making clear that his return to Earth came at the cost of serving him as a pawn in the eternal war between Heaven and Hell. Malebolgia did not engage in physical conflict in this issue but instead declared his authority and mocked Spawn’s confusion, establishing the rules of their twisted bargain. (Spawn v1 #1) In his next appearance, Malebolgia reasserted control over Spawn by manipulating his memories and forcing him to confront the futility of his resistance. He appeared again in Hell’s domain, surrounding Spawn with visions of torment and reminding him of the necroplasmic countdown tied to his existence. Malebolgia used his overwhelming size and horrific laughter to dominate the encounter, making clear that every use of Spawn’s powers only brought him closer to returning permanently to Hell. His activity here was that of psychological torment, designed to reinforce his absolute authority. (Spawn v1 #2) Malebolgia soon took a more direct hand in shaping Spawn’s existence by appearing in visions even when Spawn was on Earth, intruding into his thoughts and ridiculing his attachment to his past life. When Spawn began to resist, Malebolgia unleashed demonic entities to harass and test him, demonstrating that his control was not limited to words alone. He also gave chilling proclamations of the larger war to come, positioning Spawn as one piece of his grand design. This appearance reinforced his role as both a manipulator and enforcer of Spawn’s damned condition. (Spawn v1 #4)
The recently returned "Freak" was attacked by Clown, who ripped the humans arms off. The Freak laughed it off and lets Clown know that he is not scared of him or any other of the Spawns because they are all "his." Clown quickly shies away as the Freak begins to transform. After reattaching his arm, the Freak transports Violator to Hell. Upon returning to Hell, Violator regains his full strength, as well as his senses. Fear consumes Violator as he looks deep into the Freak's eye, which becomes all too familiar to him. Violator trembles in fear and astonishment as the Freak revealed his true identity to be Malebolgia.
After being defeated by Al Simmons, the Lords of Hell cut off Malebolgia's power and set up 'roadblocks' to ensure that he never returned. Betrayed, Malebolgia swears to regain his true power and form and kill all those who tried to prevent his return, including the Violator who had sided with Malebolgia's greatest rival, Mammon, after Malebolgia's fall. Malebolgia orders Violator to spread the word of his return in order to spread fear. Malebolgia would be later defeated by Leetha, who took over Downing, destroying the Freak's body, seemingly killing him. Presumably, Malebolgia was still around trying to reform himself in some other way. (Spawn v1 #199)
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Malebolgia was a colossal, skeletal demon with a monstrous frame and hunched posture, often depicted looming over his surroundings. His skin was a sickly, mottled green with prominent veins and deep creases across his gaunt body. His elongated jaws were filled with jagged fangs, and his massive mouth stretched unnaturally wide, making his grin appear perpetual and sinister. He had long, clawed hands and ragged protrusions from his shoulders and back that gave him a spiny silhouette. His eyes glowed with an eerie, menacing light, contrasting with his dark, decayed form. Malebolgia’s personality was sadistic and mocking, marked by a constant, booming laughter that echoed through his interactions with Spawn. He reveled in tormenting others emotionally, preferring psychological dominance over straightforward destruction. He spoke with confidence and contempt, belittling Spawn and treating him as little more than an expendable pawn. He displayed cunning intelligence, always focused on his schemes and the larger conflict between Hell and Heaven, but never failed to indulge in cruelty for its own sake. (Spawn v1 #1)
Powers and abilities
Malebolgia is one of the strongest demon lords in the Spawn series. He is a skilled manipulator, as well possessing superhuman abilities and teleportation. He can also possess living beings such as his time using the Freak’s body as a host and spread his essence onto other humans.
Malebolgia was a demon lord of Hell, a ruler of one of its realms, and as such his physical being was endowed with vast infernal power. His body was immense and durable, resistant to conventional forms of attack, and his strength was enough to physically dominate lesser beings. He was capable of summoning fire and brimstone, commanding legions of demons, and altering his environment to reflect his will. His control extended beyond physical strength, as his necroplasmic essence granted him the ability to create and empower Hellspawns like Al Simmons. (Spawn v1 #2)

- In Spawn, Malebolgia did not appear in the animated television series but was heavily referenced in the show.
Films
- In Spawn, Malebolgia appeared in the live-action 1997 film where he was voiced by actor Frank Welker. His right-hand man, the Violator, bargains a deal with the man named Jason Wynn to create a powerful man-made substance, a deadly virus to bring more deaths and collect more human souls in exchange for Wynn's control over the Earth. Malebolgia ordered his loyal servant to request Wynn to recruit an important soldier for them, for Malebolgia, has chosen a general to lead his dark army. That chosen candidate was the government assassin, Al Simmons.
Video games
- In Spawn: Armageddon, Malebolgia appeared in the setting of the video game where he was voiced by actor David Sobolov.
- In Mortal Kombat 11, Malebolgia made a cameo appearance in the setting of the fighting video game. He appeared in Spawn's arcade ending and was shown as part of his victory poses. The game revealed that Malebolgia was a cousin to Shinnok and Cetrion. During the ending, he was banished alongside Kronika in a new hell trapped for all eternity.
