Origin

Amara Aquilla in New Mutants v1 #11.

Amara Juliana Olivians Aquilla

From a young age, she came to lose her mother who had been murdered by the mysterious Black Priestess. Amara had a rather close bond to her father and obeyed his every wish. With a faction of the city’s Inca population attempting to transform the republic into an imperial state and some dark cult following the Black Priestess regularly sacrificing young girls in a pit of fire in some caves beneath the Nova Roma, the senator feared for his daughter’s safety and ordered her to hide among a friendly Indian tribe, disguising her features with a wig and body paint. This was where Amara came to meet the New Mutants, who accompanied Sunspot’s mother on an archaeological trip in the region. After a brief battle, Amara was captured by the Mutants, who took her aboard their ship, only to later crash down a waterfall. The river washed away the girl’s disguise, though. Before Amara could answer any questions, the entire group was arrested by a legion of Roman soldiers. They were all thrown into a dungeon and later prepared for performance in the arena. Despite Amara’s warning, the Mutants ate some of the drugged food offered to them, so she decided to escape on her own. However, she did not get very far and was captured by Selene, herself part of her artificial world as the wife of Roman Lord Gallio and the black priestess in one person. (New Mutants v1 #9)

Amara was to be the next victim of Selene’s cult and she was pushed into a pit of molten lava for Selene to absorb her lifeforce. However, instead, the incident triggered the girl’s own mutant powers, her ability to call up and control fire, magma and earthquakes. She rose from the pit that was meant to be her grave and began battling Selene. Aided by the New Mutants, she managed to apparently kill the sorceress and also to stop the schemes of Lord Gallio, who had intended to inspire a rebellion and claim Senator Aquilla’s position. (New Mutants v1 #11) As her power was connected to her temper, Amara’s father thought it best for her to accompany the New Mutants and receive proper training. Reluctantly, Amara agreed but when they arrived in Rio, she soon had troubles adjusting to civilization. Confused by the many new impressions, she ran away and, wandering around the city, she had a sunstroke. Hallucinating, she endangered the entire city, causing tremors and creating minor volcanoes. After she had received proper treatment, Amara finally understood the need to get her powers under control. (New Mutants v1 #12)

New Mutants

Magma in New Mutants v1 #20.

While at a Hellfire Club event, Magma was told by Selene that Selene had killed her mother and, later, recognized her grandmother, many times removed, in a statue depicting the ancient Moon Goddess, Selene. Selene approached her to claim having been both the model for the statue and the ancestor in question, stating that their lives, heritage, and destiny were bound far more closely than she ever dreamed. Magma refused to believe her claim and Selene smashed the statue, stating it was a forgery. (New Mutants v1 #53) Upon returning home, Amara received a letter from her father, stating that she had learned enough from the outside world and it was time to return home and marry. (New Mutants v1 #56) Mirage accidentally revealed that Amara's heart's desire was the Hellion, Empath. Mortified, Amara left to her room and fantasized life among the Hellions, at the Massachusetts Academy again. After hearing of an animal creature that was being mistreated after capture, the New Mutants abducted Bird Brain in a contest with the Hellions, where Amara and Empath revealed their mutual attraction to each other, and, after returning home victorious, Amara decided to return to the Massachusetts Academy. Amara later left the New Mutants and joined the Hellions, stating that she was sent to learn about civilization and she wished to learn from the Hellions now. (New Mutants v1 #57)

Magma continued her training with the Hellions and it seemed that Empath cared for her too, as he held back whenever he had to use his power on her. However, apparently, he was manipulating her on a subconscious level, at least that’s what the White Queen recognized. When Amara received a second letter from her father, demanding her to come home, Emma Frost ordered Empath to accompany Magma to influence her father into letting her stay and also to make sure the Hellfire Club could make use of Nova Roma’s mineralogical wealth. On the way, their plane crashed and Amara and Manuel had to help each other survive in the Amazonian jungle. Along the way, they resolved their feelings for each other and started a relationship. Empath also encouraged Magma to stand up to her father and to not be married against her will. (New Mutants v1 #62) Senator Aquilla insisted on Amara at least meeting with her betrothed, when suddenly scientists of the High Evolutionary, needing a test subject for a new device to remove mutant powers, kidnapped her. Her father contacted the White Queen for help and promised to let Amara stay at the school if she wanted. Emma, in turn, alerted her fellow Hellfire Club colleagues for a rescue mission. It did not matter that it was actually the New Mutants and not the Hellions who freed Amara, she was safely returned and the wedding was called off. (New Mutants Annual v1 #4)

The couple decided to extend their stay in Nova Roma a little bit further, though. This was a fortunate move, as in their absence the other Hellions were killed in battle against Trevor Fitzroy and the Sentinels. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #282) Along with former Hellions Firestar and Warpath, Cannonball paid them a visit to deliver the sad news. Once there, they found something was not quite right with Nova Roma. As they investigated, Empath confessed that he had discovered the entire city of Nova Roma to be a lie, its inhabitants consisting of brainwashed kidnap victims. The people were kept at a low technological and theological level so they would worship and sustain Selene. With her gone from the area, the spell slowly faded and people had started to remember, but Empath had tried to prolong the scenario as, for the first time in his life, he was happy. With the secret now out, he revealed to Magma what appeared to be her true name and heritage: Allison Crestmere, daughter of a British diplomat stationed in Rio. The other Nova Romans too being told their 'true identities', Empath and 'Allison' decided to stay and help the people adjust to life in the 20th century. (New Warriors v1 #31)

A highlight in Amara‘s life was when she met the Avenger, Hercules, a being from her people‘s religion, in person. At first, she did not believe him to be the real half-god the mythology was based upon, but when they together helped save a child from a burning building and she later witnessed Hercules interacting with a teenager who was soon to die of the injuries received in the flames, she regained her faith and kneeled before him. Hercules told her to stand up again, asking for friendship instead of worship. Actually, he thought people like her the greater hero, as compared to his own they have a relative short lifespan and risk far more each time they enter a battle. (New Mutants v1 #81)

With the Hellfire Club and Xavier’s at a temporary truce, the New Mutants also attended the parties of the Hellfire Club, as their mentor, Magneto, belonged to the Inner Circle as the White King. In one such occasion, Amara got into an argument with one of the party guests over a statue. While the businessman claimed that it portrayed the moon goddess, Selene, Magma insisted that it was a duplicate of a piece in possession of her family, actually representing her grandmother. Selene intervened, clarifying that they both were right, the statue showed herself, her also happening to be Amara’s ancestor. Amara refused to believe this. (New Mutants v1 #53)

During the New Mutants‘ many battles with the Hellions, Magma came to realize that she was attracted to the Hellion known as Empath. Of course, she kept this to herself, but her secret was exposed when Mirage, in a playful manner, created images of everyone’s desires. Angry about her privacy being violated, she stormed into her room to re-read a letter from her father. He reminded her that, according to Roman tradition, she was about the right age to be married and asked her to return home soon. Empath, being an aristocrat like herself, Magma made the only decision she could and transferred to the Massachusetts Academy to find out if she really loved him or not. However, she promised to stay in contact with the New Mutants. (New Mutants v1 #57)

X-Treme X-Men

Allison Crestmere in New Mutants v2 #7.

Hearing about Magma’s plight, two students, the healer Josh Foley and his friend Julian Keller, decided to see if they could not be heroes and awaken Magma. Applying his healing touch, Josh succeeded, but Magma woke up confused, destroyed a part of the building with her powers and ran away. (New Mutants v2 #7)

The shock of being 'killed' and brought back to life again, her real memories reinstated themselves. When she calmed down a bit, Magma knew for sure that she was Amara Aquilla, daughter of Nova Roma, and that the identity of Allison Crestmere was the fake one. While it has yet to be revealed who exactly was responsible for messing with her sense of self, or for what reasons, Amara herself believes that it was to steal her away from her home and torment those who love her. (X-Treme X-Men v1 #46)

Unbeknown to anyone, the mysterious Bogan had undermined the X-Corporation, making use of his pet telepath. Bogan influenced Empath, who in turn manipulated Sunspot and Magma into kissing and embracing each other, despite them not being romantically involved with each other. Although apparently neither one remembers this incident, the memory of it might still be there on a subconscious level and trouble Amara – as it was pretty much some sort of abuse, if not rape. (X-Treme X-Men v1 #35)

While vacationing in Guadeloupe, she found a new boyfriend. Antonio was a mutant with almost the same powers as Magma. While on a date in the magma of a volcano, the Decimation took his mutant powers away. He incinerated in a blink of an eye. His death temporarily drove her insane causing her to make the volcano erupt and attack a nearby town. (X-Men: The 198 v1 #1) She was later apprehended by Empath and brought to the Xavier Institute where she shared a tent with Skids and Outlaw. (X-Men: The 198 v1 #2)

Magma had to remain in her molten state for a number of days, long enough for her body to heal itself. Dr. Nemesis even built her a vat of molten lava for her to bathe in to aid in her recovery. As she was bathing, Sam approached her and explained how she had been saved, and that Sunspot had seemed particularly worried about her. Amara had begun to pick up on Bobby’s growing affection of her too, but shut Sam down when he brought it up. Despite most of Selene’s resurrected army returning to their graves, Cypher was a different matter. His power over language, as well as some help from Warlock, allowed him to overcome the TO virus and Selene’s influence. The X-Men saw no threat from him and his first action was to try to speak to Amara. Still recovering from her ordeal, she immediately dismissed him, although she knew she would have to speak to him at some point. Even though she was wary of him, she later sought him out, so that he could have his say. Much as when she was not quite sure about Illyana, there was something about Cypher’s demeanor that unnerved her. When he tried to explain his actions, she backed off, still not fully trusting him. Knowing no other way to explain himself, he made up a language that he knew only she would understand and spoke to her. His exact words are a mystery but whatever he said earned Amara’s forgiveness and trust once more. (New Mutants v3 #9)

It took a while for everyone to recover, and the team lost a few members as Magik, Karma and Cannonball all left for various reasons. After seeing the fate of the Inferno Babies, Cyclops tasked Magma and the rest of the New Mutants with tying up and loose ends from the X-Men’s past. The first of which was the location of the recently resurrected Nate Grey aka X-Man. Tracking him down they discovered he was a prisoner of the Sugarman, who was using Nate’s energy signature to open up a portal to the Age of Apocalypse. Magma and they others worked together to defeat the twisted villain and save Nate, who decided to join the team afterwards. (New Mutants v3 #27)

House of X

On Krakoa in New Mutants v4 #8.

After the establishment of the Krakoa nation, Mutants from around the world gathered to be in their new homeland. (House of X v1 #6) Magma accompanied Boom‑Boom and Armor when the New Mutants landed in Nova Roma, Brazil, responding to a crisis near a Krakoan gate. Their shuttle arrived at the edge of the ancient city, and Magma’s father, Senator Aquilla, welcomed them and informed the mission that mutant children had been rescued after being attacked near the gate. He explained that monstrous beasts had been stalking mutants inbound from Krakoa. Promptly, Magma joined Boom‑Boom and Armor on the ground as they pursued one of these creatures into the surrounding jungle. She harnessed her geokinetic power to alter the terrain—raising dense mud walls, muddy quicksands, and rocky barriers—to slow the beast’s advance and funnel it into a trap. When the monster lunged, she unleashed a blast of magma, forcing it back. Armor’s exo-skeleton punch and Boom‑Boom’s energy blasts combined with Magma’s lava surge to neutralize the threat. Once subdued, she cooled the magma around the creature to prevent collateral damage, and then conferred with her teammates on the continued threat near the gate. She remained cautious and protective of local children, staying alert for further incursions. (New Mutants v4 #8) Magma reiterated to Chamber that Carnelia did not recognize Krakoa, explaining the geopolitical barrier preventing use of teleportation gates, which forced much of the mission to be done by air or foot. She articulated her concern calmly—emerging as diplomatic yet direct—while emphasizing that the Nova Roma gates were under strain and untrustworthy. As the team advanced through the jungle, she maintained vigilance, alerting Armor to tremors beneath the forest floor suggesting subterranean predator movement. She pressed for tactical caution and refused to rush forward without backup. When the group’s psychic alarm was triggered by shifting earth, she positioned herself at the front line, ready to deploy molten defenses. Though no battles erupted in this issue, her presence anchored the team’s strategy: adapt to local politics while leveraging her heritage knowledge of Nova Roma’s environment. (New Mutants v4 #9)

Overview

Personality and attributes

Amara Juliana Olivians Aquilla in New Mutants v2 #3.

In appearance, Magma was a female human of Brazilian-Roman heritage whose looks reflected both Nova Roma ancestry and Amazonian upbringing. She had pale golden skin that gleamed under sunlight and gave the impression of smooth ceramic, echoing both her noble lineage and her elemental nature. Her hair was long, straight, and ash-blonde, falling past her shoulders and catching highlights of ember-red when lit from behind or when she accessed her powers. Her eyes were pale blue, almost reflective, and held both calm thoughtfulness and latent power. She measured approximately 5′6″ in height, with a lean yet muscular build reflecting years of jungle survival training and ceremonial fitness. Her limbs were toned and defined, suggesting agility without compromising strength. When first seen, she wore rugged jungle attire: sleeveless tunic and loose pants in earth tones, belted at the waist, designed for mobility. Her feet were bare or wrapped in simple leather straps—suited to Amazonian terrain. Though she did not yet don her gladiatorial arm bracers, her bare forearms revealed faint scars from jungle trials. Every line of her physique—from square shoulders to tapered waist—spoke of both natural discipline and the uncanny stillness of someone who could become living energy. (New Mutants v1 #8)

At first, she spoke sparingly and often in clipped English, revealing both a respectful upbringing and a cautious nature in this unfamiliar setting. While she responded to threats and threats of exposure with calm defiance, she showed no hesitation in defending herself or others. She expressed suspicion of outside interference, yet remained courteous when questioned, blending politeness with guarded reserve. Though she was initially silent during the New Mutants’ interrogation, she later corrected their misunderstandings about Nova Roma’s politics with clarity and minimal emotion. (New Mutants v1 #8)

She was born the daughter Lucius Antonius Aquilla who had been raised in the secretive confines of Nova Roma and was steeped in the rich heritage of ancient Roman customs and traditions. Growing up in this enigmatic society, he displayed exceptional intellect and an unwavering commitment to justice, deeply rooted in preserving Nova Roma's sanctity. From a young age, Lucius navigated Nova Roma's intricate political landscape with astute insight, earning admiration for his dedication to upholding its traditions. As he rose through the city's political ranks, he honed his skills in diplomacy and strategic planning, driven by an unyielding resolve to protect Nova Roma from both internal strife and external threats. His early years laid the groundwork for his later prominence as a formidable figure within the corridors of power in Nova Roma. (New Mutants v1 #9)

Due to her peoples origins, they came to believe in the the ancient Greek gods. Despite that, she did not believe that the Greek deities were real. However, her faith in them was reignited when she came to meet Hercules who was a member of the Avengers. The encounter saw her kneeling in worship but he told her to stand up again asking Amara for friendship instead as he saw people like her to be greater heroes. (New Mutants v1 #81)

Powers and abilities

Control over magma in New Mutants v3 #8.

Magma was a female human mutant, a naturally occurring Homo superior whose genetic makeup allowed her to harness geothermal and tectonic forces beyond human potential. As a mutant, she possessed an active X‑gene that restructured her physiology—for example, enabling higher body temperature tolerance, accelerated metabolism for generating thermal energy, and heightened muscular resilience. Her internal organs were adapted to withstand extreme heat and pressure, while her nervous system processed spatial and seismic feedback efficiently. Even before manifesting her full powers, she exhibited immunity to minor temperature shifts and endurance during physical exertion. Her senses—especially heat perception and ground vibration detection—were noticeably sharper than normal humans, allowing early detection of subtle environmental changes. In short, her mutant nature granted her a body and mind acclimated to elemental extremes and capable of directing bio-geothermal energy naturally. (New Mutants v1 #8)

Her mutant ability at first manifestation was the capacity to transform segments of her body into molten magma, to superheat rock and soil, and to manipulate localized geothermal energy. In her debut, she demonstrated this by emerging from a lava pit unharmed and visibly ignited—her skin glowing bright orange-red and radiating heat. Though she did not yet deploy ranged attacks, the mere fact of surviving immersion in lava confirmed her ability to merge her body with molten rock. She could melt surfaces around her, alter terrain texture underfoot, and generate controlled bursts of flame-like magma emission. Her hands and arms shimmered with incandescent energy, suggesting focus points for thermal projectiles or eruptions. The initial transformation suggested that she could control the temperature and solidity of earth—softening, liquefying, and remolding it mentally—though she had not yet displayed full seismic control or large-scale eruption power. Her ability offered both protective heat and geokinetic versatility, making her more than a human burner: she was a living conduit of the planet’s internal fire. (New Mutants v1 #8)
