Biography
Pre-Crisis
Margot Hammer came to Xanadu's shop for a reading because she was concerned about her love Victor Christianson. Xanadu drew the hanged man from her tarot deck, told Margot he was hiding something from her, and asked her to have him meet Xanadu. Victor came to Xanadu, and she recognized him as a vampire from a previous meeting with him in Brussels. She drew the four of swords, the card of everlasting death, and Victor stormed off. Margot learned Victor was a vampire and wanted him to make her one too, and the couple came to Xanadu. Victor refused to make Margot a vampire, and waited until sunrise so he could end his unlife as a gesture of his love for Margot. Manadu kept his spirit in one of the jars in her shop. (Doorway to Nightmare v1 #3) Detective Nick Abrams came to Xanadu for advice on the disappearance of the mummy of Princess Morea, her lamps and her mummified demon bodyguard from the Met. He saw a Chinese lamp identical to the ones taken from the Met in Xanadu's shop, and despite her protest that if was gifted to her in the past he took it as evidence. The lamp returned to Xanadu's shop, but Abrahms took it again. Morea's undead bodyguard attacked Abrahms, but Xanadu destroyed the demon. Abrahm's girlfriend Sue Lei Hau took the lamp. She was possessed by the spirit of Morea and needed all the lamps to permanently take control of Hau's body. Abrahms and Xanadu confronted her after she performed her sorcery, but Hau's love for Abrahms was so strong that she shook off Morea's control. Morea's spirit left, leaving behind only the mummified remains of Morea's six-fingered hand, which Xanadu locked in a jar and took back to her shop. (Doorway to Nightmare v1 #4)
One day, Madame Xanadu caught a drug addict attempting to rob her place. She would later take him in in order to help him kick his habit. Soon afterwards, she was visited by a woman with a magical book of spells that she did not understand. The woman had wanted to learn witchcraft but Madame Xanadu forbid it causing the visitor to storm out of the house. Later on, the woman operated behind Madame Xanadu's back by taking the addict out of rehab after the two developed an attraction to one another after seeing each other briefly at the shop. However, Madame Xanadu would keep track of their activities which included living together, using drugs and being swingers. Ultimately, they planned a costume party and intended to read the book of spells in the midst of the event as they began living a life of sin. At the party, an evil frenzy erupted with music, booze and provocative images where at midnight the hysteria led to the demons Ishtar and Tammuz being released. It was then that Madame Xanadu unmasked herself and asked the addict and woman to look into each others eyes to rekindle the bond between them that started as they fell in love at first sight. The thoughts of happiness caused the two to confess to one another and kiss breaking the fury that had engulfed the room thus ending the magical mayhem caused by the book. Days later, the woman returned to Madame Xanadu's shop in order to give her the book of spells as she no longer wanted to pursue witchcraft. (Madame Xanadu v1 #1)
Post-Crisis
Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Nimue Inwudu was a female member of the Elder Folk where she was daughter of Staegys and Atheron. (Madame Xanadu v1 #19) She was the youngest child of three sisters with the older being Morgana and the eldest being Vivienne Inwudu who served as the Lady of the Lake. (Madame Xanadu v1 #1) They were descendants of sunken Atlantis after the Cataclysm leading to the diaspora of Homo Magi around the world. Their ancestors came to arrive in the forests of the world near what became Camelot where they were allowed to join as protectors of the sacred lands by Oberon and Titania. (Madame Xanadu v1 #19)
She came to join the Sentinels of Magic that consisted of various magical superheroes that sought to stop the Spectre Force empowered Asmodel. (Day of Judgment v1 #1)
Xanadu came to re-grow her eyes that were burnt out by the Spectre but they withered away and died again. She did this a total of 14 times but her magic was unable to match the powerful curse placed on her by the Spirit of Vengeance. (Infinite Crisis Special: Day of Vengeance v1 #1)
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.
She was captured by the Lords of Order and forced to wear the Cloak of Cyra thus making her a host to one of their number. As a result, she became Sister Symmetry where she joined her kind as they set about their plans for the removal of magic from the mortal world. They were present on the other dimensional world of Myrra that was being used as a place of shelter by the Justice League Dark who had fled from the Upside-Down Man and the Otherkind. (Justice League Dark v2 #9)
She was in London when Batman arrived in the city in search for her. At first, Xanadu attacked him with magic as she believed he was an attacker. However, the Dark Knight proved himself an ally and requested her aid where she used a portal to help the Justice League in the fight against the Eradicator. Despite her aid, the heroes were overwhelmed by the Kryptonian A.I.'s Daxamite army thus forcing Madame Xanadu to flee with the Justice League. (Justice League v4 #41)
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Madame Xanadu was a beautiful slender woman with raven hair and almond eyes. (Doorway to Nightmare v1 #1)
She claimed that she was limited in acting to help others but could advise them in helping themselves. (Doorway to Nightmare v1 #1)
Throughout her existence, Madame Xanadu served as both observer and participant in humanity’s ongoing struggle with forces beyond comprehension. She involved herself in the affairs of mortals and metahumans alike, often acting as a guide during times of mystical crisis. Her powers were formidable, though she rarely displayed them with overt aggression. Instead, she wielded subtle influence—reading the currents of fate, deciphering omens, and binding unseen forces to her will through ritual. Her parlor, filled with ancient relics and candlelight, was more than a place of business; it was a crossroads between realms, where spirits whispered and destiny’s threads could be touched by mortal hands. (Madame Xanadu v1 #1)
Madame Xanadu’s morality was complex, guided by centuries of experience and shaped by the tension between fate and free will. She was not a hero in the traditional sense, but her actions frequently aligned with preservation of order and protection of the innocent. Her guidance was not always kind—she believed truth, however painful, was preferable to ignorance. Her demeanor was calm, enigmatic, and often tinged with melancholy, as though every revelation reminded her of the fragility of human ambition in the face of time’s vastness. (Madame Xanadu v1 #14)
One account claimed that her parents were Staegys and Atheron of the Elder Folk. (Madame Xanadu v1 #19) This saw her as being the youngest of three sisters with the eldest being Vivienne Inwudu and her older sibling being Morgana Inwudu. (Madame Xanadu v1 #1) Another account claimed that her mother was Igraine of the fey and that she had nine sisters all of whom had the same mother. (Demon Knights v1 #11) Among them was Tui who served as one of the Ladies of the Lake and was said to be the kindest of them. (Demon Knights v1 #12) She also had a half-brother who was King Arthur when Igraine had a child with a human. (Demon Knights v1 #11)
During the time of King Arthur, it was known that she was the lover of Merlin. (Madame Xanadu v2 #1)
Madame Xanadu’s encounters with other mystics shaped much of her path. She crossed paths with the Phantom Stranger, whose ambiguous role in cosmic events often mirrored her own, leading to a relationship of fascination and distrust. Their connection was one of the oldest and most intricate in the occult world—a blend of affection, rivalry, and philosophical opposition. While he embodied divine neutrality, she represented mortal agency, refusing to accept fate as fixed. Their long association spanned centuries, and through it, Xanadu often found herself tested between faith in destiny and belief in free will. (Madame Xanadu v1 #10)
In 1493, Nimue had a girlfriend, an orphan seamstress named Marisol during the Spanish Inquisition. (Madame Xanadu v2 #11) Their relationship, however, was discovered and Marisol was condemned for sodomy and witchcraft, and she was executed before Nimue could save her. (Madame Xanadu v2 #15)
Powers and abilities
Nimue was a descendant of the Homo Magi that left sunken Atlantis and was one of the Elder Folk that tended the forests around Camelot. (Madame Xanadu v1 #19) As one of the fey, they were considered kin to fairies who lived on the edges of the seen world and seen as untrustworthy by humans. (Demon Knights v1 #11)
Her immortality was both her greatest gift and deepest curse. Sustained by her connection to the arcane and by her penance for Merlin’s downfall, she remained forever young while centuries slipped past. Yet, with each age, she carried the weight of her misjudgments—the fall of Camelot, the corruption of Morgaine, and the countless lives altered by her interventions. Still, she persisted, believing redemption could be found not in power but in service. This faith guided her into the modern era, where she became a quiet guardian of balance, ensuring that neither chaos nor order gained full dominion over the Earth. (Madame Xanadu v1 #6)
Her powers were vast but refined. She possessed heightened perception of time and fate, the ability to summon and bind spirits, and mastery of divination through tarot and scrying. Unlike many sorcerers, she relied less on raw force and more on knowledge and precision. Her magic often required ritual—drawn circles, whispered incantations, or the flipping of cards whose imagery connected her to the weave of destiny itself. She also maintained an intuitive awareness of magical disturbances, enabling her to sense imbalance long before others perceived it. Yet, despite her might, she was cautious with her gifts, understanding that every act of interference carried consequence. (Madame Xanadu v1 #5)
Her connection to the wider mystical world positioned her as an advisor to many heroes who sought understanding of the supernatural. Whether aiding teams of mystics or confronting ancient evils herself, she remained steadfast in her role as interpreter of the unseen. Even as empires rose and fell, Madame Xanadu continued her vigil, her existence serving as a bridge between past and present, myth and reality. Her story was one of penance and perseverance—a journey from seduction and betrayal to wisdom and redemption, carried across the centuries by the strength of will alone. (Madame Xanadu v1 #20)
She could regrow limbs using magic such as lost eyes though if they were subject to powerful curses then they would simply wither and die again. (Infinite Crisis Special: Day of Vengeance v1 #1)
By the modern age, she operated a shop called Hokus & Pokus Occult Curioso located on Christy St. in Greenwich Village. (Doorway to Nightmare v1 #3) Establishing parlors and sanctuaries in hidden corners of the world, she offered counsel through tarot and clairvoyance, her predictions often tinged with both truth and warning. She was neither charlatan nor saint, but a woman who had seen the flow of fate too many times to view it as immutable. Her clientele ranged from the desperate and the damned to heroes seeking understanding of their own destinies, and to all, she extended her insight with an enigmatic blend of compassion and detachment. (Doorway to Nightmare v1 #1)

Television
- In Young Justice, Madame Xanadu appeared in the setting of the animated television series in the episode "Denial" where she was voiced by actress Cree Summer. Nimue Inwudu was initially not aware she had the potential for magic. She ran a scam operation in fake fortune telling from her parlor in New Orleans's French Quarter. Kent Nelson visited Xanadu's parlor, and requested that she make contact with his deceased wife, Inza. During the seance, wind blew around the room and the table appeared to levitate, and Madame Xanadu appeared to channel Inza, saying that she was cold and lonely. However, this show only led to Kent bursting into laughter. Despite her attempts to maintain the illusion and keep the money saying that there were no refunds for non-believers, Kent easily exposed her as a fraud: she used wind machines and tire jacks to make her performance look convincing. He was disappointed at not being able to speak with his wife, and also at the fact that Madame Xanadu was pulling a scam, when in fact she has the right aura for real magic and psychic abilities. When Madame Xanadu witnessed Abra Kadabra kidnap Kent Nelson and perform apparently real magic in order to make them disappear into thin air, she ran away screaming. Following her encounter with Kent Nelson and Abra Kadabra, Madame Xanadu was inspired to unlock her hidden dormant powers and in time became the greatest seer and medium on Earth. At some point, she also became friends with Zatanna.
