Biography
Lum (Japanese: ラム, Hepburn: Ramu)
She grew up on her homeworld, Oniboshi ("planet of the oni"), a precocious girl. She attended primary school with Benten of the rivals of the oni: the Lucky Gods, Oyuki, the ice princess, and Ran. There, the four of them developed a reputation for causing massive amounts of trouble. Ran often got roped into their mischief and took all the blame, while Lum got off unharmed, leading Ran to seek revenge. Lum, Benten, and Oyuki's reputation grew in junior high school, and they became a school gang. Lum later got engaged to a handsome oni named Rei but rejected him because of his dullness.
Long ago, Lum was forced to engage marriage with Rei. However, she eventually broke the marriage and completely dumped Rei when she couldn't stand of his arrogance, ugly shapeshifting abilities and piggy glutton habits.
The Oni challenged humanity to a game of tag, with the fate of the planet hanging in the balance. Ataru Moroboshi was randomly chosen as humanity’s representative, and Lum became his opponent. Using her natural ability of flight and her agility, she easily evaded Ataru’s attempts to grab her horns, which were the win condition of the game. However, Ataru managed to snatch her horns at the last moment by tricking her with his desperation, securing Earth’s safety. Lum suddenly appeared again when Ataru, in a fit of elation over his victory, accidentally proposed marriage aloud. Misunderstanding his words as directed toward her, Lum instantly accepted, declaring herself Ataru’s fiancée. She began following him relentlessly, floating by his side in her bikini outfit, shocking his classmates and infuriating his actual girlfriend, Shinobu. Lum’s constant presence and affectionate clinging created chaos in Ataru’s personal life, as she ignored his protests and insisted on her role as his bride. Lum demonstrated her more aggressive side when Ataru attempted to deny his engagement to her. Each time he insulted or dismissed her, Lum retaliated by unleashing bolts of electricity from her body, electrocuting him in front of others. This shocking punishment became her trademark response whenever Ataru behaved badly, especially toward other women. Despite her violent outbursts, she remained devoted to Ataru, attending school with him and ignoring social norms, which embarrassed him but reinforced her role as a constant fixture in his life.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Lum was a very beautiful and voluptuous young woman with golden-brown eyes and cyan shoulder length hair. Like all of her kind she has sharp teeth, pointy ears and small yellow horns. For her everyday attire she wears a strapless yellow tiger striped bikini with matching boots. When she is attending Tomobiki High School she wears the basic navy blue sailor suit for female students either winter or summer school uniform and wears black dress shoes and white socks in place of her boots and her neckerchief within her uniform is yellow as opposed to other female students including Shinobou are wearing their neckerchief in red. At one point, her entire uniform was also covered by her yellow tiger stripped bikini.
In personality, Lum was energetic, affectionate, and devoted, displaying a deep love for Ataru despite his unfaithfulness and constant exasperation at her clinginess. She was also jealous and quick-tempered, unleashing her electrical powers whenever she perceived Ataru was being unfaithful. Despite these flaws, she was kindhearted and friendly to others, quickly winning the admiration of many characters with her charm and loyalty. Her mix of sweetness and volatility made her both endearing and intimidating.
She initially saw Miyake Shinobu as a rival that challenged her love for Ataru. However, as the story dragged on, they eventually become close friends and allies, using Shinobu's strength and Lum's electrical powers to accomplish things together. Shinobu gradually concedes and moves onto trying to build a relationship with Mendou, and then Inaba later in the series.
Powers and abilities
In powers, Lum possessed several natural abilities as an Oni. She could fly unaided, hovering in the air with ease, and could unleash powerful electrical discharges from her body, often used to punish Ataru. Her durability was also far beyond that of a normal human, as she could withstand crashes, falls, and her own electrical blasts without serious injury. These abilities made her both a formidable figure and a source of comedic misfortune for Ataru.
Notes
- Lum Invader was created by Rumiko Takahashi where she featured in the setting of the Urusei Yatsura universe.
- Lum was created by Rumiko Takahashi for a short story she was working on before her professional debut. She worked meticulously on designing her hairstyle and body shape. However, the outspoken and uninhibited Lum is the author's polar opposite. This proved to Takahashi that she could draw characters who do not reflect herself at all.
