Biography
Lockheed
Lockheed was encountered by the human mutant Kitty Pryde on an unnamed alien planet that served as the homeworld of the extraterrestrial insectoid species known as the Brood. After Kitty Pryde was separated from her team, the X-Men, she fled into a cavernous underground network to escape Brood pursuers. Inside the caverns, she discovered Lockheed, who was a small dragon-like creature. Lockheed immediately demonstrated alignment with Kitty Pryde by using fire breath to incinerate a swarm of hostile Brood tracking entities that were attacking her. Following this confrontation, Lockheed chose to follow Kitty Pryde back to the X-Men's starship, remaining hidden from the rest of the team until they returned safely to Earth, where Kitty Pryde officially discovered he had accompanied her home. The small, purple, dragon-like alien creature covertly tracked the mutant Kitty Pryde from deep space back down to Earth, taking up residence within the subterranean maintenance tunnels hidden directly beneath the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. While executing a structural scan of the facility's lower infrastructure, the young mutant detected an anomalous energy footprint and descended into the passage to investigate, inadvertently running afoul of a highly aggressive, newly hatched nest of parasitic Sidrian Hunters. As the extraterrestrial predators swarmed and completely neutralized the intruder's localized phasing defenses, the hidden creature stepped out of the shadows to launch a decisive counter-offensive. Utilizing highly concentrated, intense internal thermochemical combustion, the small alien discharged an array of precise fire-breathing blasts that systematically scorched and destroyed the Sidrian threat, successfully shielding the human from mortal harm. Following the resolution of the combat sequence, the mutant formally presented her hidden extraterrestrial savior to the head of the academy, Professor Charles Xavier, and officially designated the creature with the permanent operational moniker of Lockheed. Deeply impressed by the tactical competence and defensive synchronization demonstrated during the underground perimeter breach, the administrator officially revoked his prior disciplinary demotion and formally reinstated the human back to active status on the primary roster. Sometime after leaving Excalibur, Lockheed and Kitty became separated, each believing the other to be dead. On his own, Lockheed travelled around England, where he soon caused quite a stir in a small village. The locals, believing him to be a demon, chased after Lockheed and would have killed him had it not been for the intervention of two young witches. The girls seemed nice and, though they took him home and cared for him, Lockheed failed to notice how much everyone else feared them. When the girls’ nemesis, a fellow witch, confronted the two, they had the idea of setting their new pet on her. Lockheed launched a torrent of flames at her but, when she saw he didn’t want to hurt her, she reached out to him with kindness. The other girls were angry that Lockheed didn’t do as they asked and struck him with stones, causing him to singe them for their wickedness. This new girl informed Lockheed that the person he thought he had lost was actually alive and well. Bidding farewell to his new friend, Lockheed set off across the ocean to find Kitty. At some point Lockheed became aware of a problem that was going on back on his home world. He aligned himself with SWORD, the Sentient World Observation and Response Department, who offered to look into the situation in return for his help. Lockheed agreed and was asked to secretly report on the goings-on within the X-Men and alert S.W.O.R.D. if anything happened that would require their attention. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #22)
Lockheed was inconsolable over the loss of Kitty and what made it worse was that they had parted ways without clearing the air. He spent more time on SWORD’s Peak space station and even started drinking heavily to numb his pain. He had hoped that SWORD’s technologies would allow for a way to retrieve Kitty from deep space, but Agent Brand told him that nothing they could do would bring Kitty back. The only bright side was that reports had come in of the bullet still phasing through asteroids, indicating Kitty was still alive. This offered little comfort to Lockheed, causing him briefly to contemplate striking up a partnership with the deadly robot Unit to get Kitty back, though he backed out at the last minute. Regardless of his disappointment with SWORD, Lockheed still stuck around and, when Agent Brand’s criminal brother was kidnapped off the Peak, Lockheed joined his boss and Beast to retrieve him. Personality and attributes
In appearance, Lockheed was a small, quadrupedal extraterrestrial creature that possessed the biological physical traits commonly associated with a mythical dragon. He was roughly the size of a domestic feline and possessed a dark purple hide that covered the entirety of his body. The head featured a slender snout, a mouth lined with small teeth, two dark eyes, and a pair of small, backward-curving horn-like protrusions on the back of the cranium. Attached to the dorsal area of the torso was a pair of functional, leathery, bat-like wings of the same purple coloration. He possessed four short limbs, each terminating in sharp claws, and a long, flexible, prehensile tail used for gripping objects or balancing. Powers and abilities
Lockheed was born a member of an advanced extraterrestrial race where he was a member of the Flock species, though he was initially perceived by humans to be a non-sentient animal. On a basic feats level, this alien physiology granted him the ability to fly through physical atmospheres using his wings and navigate tight spaces with high agility. Lockheed possessed a highly specialized internal respiratory organ that allowed him to synthesize and exhale intense streams of high-temperature fire from his mouth, capable of instantly incinerating organic matter. Additionally, he possessed human-level cognitive intelligence, empathy, and complete comprehension of human language, which allowed him to understand complex tactical situations, track enemies, and form deep, communicative bonds with specific companions.
