Biography
Original Timeline
Liu Kang (Chinese: 劉鋼; pinyin: Liúgāng) was a male human born in Earthrealm in the Henan Province in China where he was orphaned from a young age. He was taken in by the Order of Light's Shaolin Temple where he came to be trained in the teachings of the Great Kung Lao.
At some point, he encountered a martial arts master named Bo' Rai Cho and came under his tutelage for a time.
After several years Liu Kang's training was complete, and then he was enrolled into the top secret White Lotus Society, an order of warriors created by Raiden to defend the Earthrealm. As the tenth generation of the Mortal Kombat Tournament approached, Liu Kang was summoned by Shaolin Grandmaster Wu, and was sent by the Temple of Light to defeat Shang Tsung. He desired to defeat Shang Tsung and bring the tournament back to its Shaolin owners. As he made his way to the tournament, he met and became friends with movie star Johnny Cage and Special Forces agent Sonya Blade. At the time of Liu Kang's entry, Outworld had won nine Mortal Kombat tournaments in a row. It is unknown which opponents Kang fought throughout the tournament, but he eventually earned the right to challenge Goro, the current Champion of Mortal Kombat. By exploiting the Shokan's overconfidence, Liu Kang defeated Goro and became the new Champion. Upon hearing of Goro's defeat, Shang Tsung challenged him. After an epic battle, Liu Kang defeated Shang Tsung with his Flying Kick, taught to him by Bo' Rai Cho. Shang Tsung's defeat caused the island to self-destruct. Liu Kang then returned home as the new Mortal Kombat Champion.
Returning home victorious, he found that his sacred home had been razed and the temple was left in ruins. Many of his Shaolin brothers had been killed in a vicious battle against the warriors of Outworld. This resulted in Liu Kang swearing revenge and travelling to the Dark Realm to participate in the next Mortal Kombat Tournament. He was joined by fellow White Lotus member and spiritual brother Kung Lao, Raiden, Sub-Zero the younger brother of the original Sub-Zero, who was killed by Scorpion, and Smoke to seek revenge. Before he traveled to Outworld, Liu Kang went to Hollywood to seek Johnny Cage's help. Luckily, Liu Kang arrived at the right time as Cage was being attacked by a Tarkatan horde. Now joined with Johnny as well as Sonya's superior Jax Briggs, they finally traveled to Outworld. At the tournament, he and Kung Lao met Kitana, and Liu Kang began to fall in love with her. He eventually learned the true nature of the Outworld tournament, but competed anyway.
In the midst of Outworld's invasion, Liu Kang found himself as a prime target of Shao Kahn's extermination squads. The Shaolin Champion had thwarted the Emperor's schemes in the past and thus was seen as the greatest threat to Kahn's rule.
Liu Kang traveled to America to look for a new generation of Shaolin warriors to train. While there in America, he met his old friend Kai. The two then traveled back to China, where Liu Kang trained Kai to be a Shaolin warrior. However, the peace was not to last, as the fallen Elder God Shinnok had escaped from the Netherrealm through a portal to Edenia. Upon learning that Kitana had been captured, Liu Kang set out on his own to save her, but was unsuccessful. Liu Kang returned to Earth, where he began gathering Earth's warriors to save Earth and assist his mentor, Raiden. Eventually, Liu Kang confronted the fallen Elder God Shinnok and once again emerged victorious, effectively ending his attack on Earth. Liu Kang returned to the Shaolin Temples, believing he has lost Kitana forever. However, the Edenian Princess appeared through a portal from Edenia and thanked Liu Kang for all he had done. She offered him a chance to join her at the throne of Edenia. However, due to his responsibilities as a Mortal Kombat Champion, Liu Kang was forced to decline her offer. Although he loved Kitana he had to do what he felt was right.
For many years, Liu Kang went on to enjoy relative peace. However, the Deadly Alliance would make itself known on Earth by its successful assassination of Liu Kang. Shang Tsung posed as Kung Lao and approached the champion as he was practicing his katas. Shang Tsung, after being beaten down by Liu Kang, would be assisted by Quan Chi, who injured Liu Kang by hitting him in the back with a projectile while he was focused on Shang Tsung. Shang Tsung used this distraction to gain the upper hand and broke Liu Kang's neck, consuming his soul shortly afterwards. Liu Kang's mutilated body was discovered by his fellow Shaolin monk Kung Lao, and he was laid to rest at the Wu Shi Academy, where a shrine was built to honor him.
Reboot Timeline
During the Armageddon, Shao Kahn ultimately won where all of creation faced destruction but during the last moments of Raiden he managed to his past experiences back to his younger self. This created a change in the timeline as the younger Raiden was guided by the scattered visions of the future where he sought to avert this dark future. It was noted that he was orphaned at a very young age and later raised by Shaolin monks.
To save Liu Kang, Raiden used his power to summon the past Shaolin and merge him with his Revenant self along with imparting his godly power to them. This saw Liu Kang being reborn and turned into a god after Raiden had joined him.
Upon defeating Kronika, Liu Kang found that he had to manipulate the Hourglass in order to continue the timeline. Though unskilled, he was aided by the now mortal Raiden who would help him as long as his mortal lifespan would allow him to do so.

His long black hair was worn loose or tied back depending on the depiction, while his fighting stance reflected his Shaolin discipline. Over time, variations of his attire emphasized his role as both monk and warrior, from traditional martial arts gear to more armored designs when facing great battles. Merging with Raiden, he came to be transformed into the Fire God.
In personality, Liu Kang was characterized by his humility, discipline, and unwavering sense of justice. Though he was driven by compassion and the duty to protect Earthrealm, he also displayed an indomitable fighting spirit, never retreating from a challenge when others depended on him. His faith in Raiden as Earthrealm’s protector and his loyalty to his fellow warriors reinforced his role as a moral center within the conflicts of Mortal Kombat. Despite facing death, corruption, and endless battles, Liu Kang remained devoted to his purpose, embodying the ideals of the champion he was chosen to be.
It was said that Kang was strong in his beliefs and despised the sorcerer Shang Tsung.
He was noted as having been orphaned at a very young age.
Powers and abilities
He came to be trained rigorously by the Shaolin monks that came to take care of him. Among his teachers was Bo' Rai Cho who imparted on Liu Kang the martial arts moves that he needed to defeat Shang Tsung. In time, he came to be skilled in a range of martial art techniques including Jun Fan, Karate, Pao Chui, Jeet Kune Do, Choy Lay Fut, Monkey and Dragon. He came to possess incredible agility, acrobatic skill and martial arts, though the latter is more common. These skills were developed during his training with Bo' Rai Cho, who also taught Kang the Flying Kick technique.
Liu Kang was human, but his intense training as a Shaolin monk and his mastery of martial arts elevated him far beyond ordinary fighters. As such, he possessed peak human physical abilities, capable of extraordinary strength, agility, and endurance. His techniques allowed him to channel his inner energy into devastating combat moves, most notably his signature flying kick and rapid-fire bicycle kicks. Beyond pure martial prowess, Liu Kang wielded control over fire, enabling him to project flames in the form of fireballs or engulf his attacks in burning energy. This combination of physical mastery and elemental power made him one of the most formidable fighters in Mortal Kombat history. Even when faced with supernatural foes and gods, Liu Kang’s abilities enabled him to stand as Earthrealm’s foremost champion.
His training allowed him to harness the power of fire that he could shoot as fireballs at his enemies.
He was able to manipulate his Yin and Yang energies through the Dualist variation, firing searing hot blasts of light in his Yin state along with healing properties while firing dark energy blasts and strengthening himself through his Yang state.
Winning the Mortal Kombat Tournament led to him being gifted as an immortal due to being a champion.
As a reanimated corpse, Liu Kang is incapable of human speech but still retains all of his combat knowledge. He can shrug off lethal blows such as a broken neck and can no longer feel any pain inflicted on him. His zombie physiology allows him to quickly recover from lethal injuries and freely twist and contort his body whilst in combat. He wields two Houan chains that can quickly age people to death if they are caught by its hooks.
Through Raiden's power, Liu Kang was turned into a demigod giving him incredible power and made him immune to the manipulations of time. As the God of Thunder and Fire, he was able to devastate entire armies by himself and easily defeat more ordinary opponents.
It was shown that he wielded a number of weapons in combat with these including Nunchaku and the Dragon Sword. After being reanimated as an undead, he came to use the Houan Chains as weapons against his opponents.
He was a member of the super-secret White Lotus Society that had operated in Earthrealm.
Kang had trained at the Wu Shi Academy (武師) which was a site where many of the Shaolin had learnt their martial arts. Unknown to many, beneath the grounds of the Academy was the Dragon Grotto that linked to the springs of the realm's Jinsei Chamber.
