Biography
Origin
Mekt Ranzz
Originally named Mekt Ranzz, he was the older brother of Garth Ranzz (Lightning Lad) and Ayla Ranzz (Lightning Lass), who would later become prominent members of the Legion of Super-Heroes. Unlike his siblings, Mekt was born without a twin, an anomaly that isolated him from Winath’s socially bonded culture. His descent into villainy began after the three were stranded on the planet Korbal, where they encountered lightning beasts that struck them with powerful electrical discharges. While the incident granted all three the ability to generate and manipulate electricity, Mekt’s resulting psychological instability and bitterness toward others—especially his siblings—drove him toward darker paths. (Adventure Comics v1 #308)
Whilst on the planet Korbal, he along with his brother were exploring the woods on that world when the were attacked by a Lightning Monster. The pair were struck when they attempted to flee but did not die with the pair developing some of the powers from the creature. His brother Garth sought to use his newfound abilities to become a hero whilst Mekt sought to become a supervillain with him adopting the name of Lightning Lord. (Superman v1 #147)
Mekt eventually reemerged as Lightning Lord, adopting the persona of a supervillain obsessed with proving his superiority over both the Legion and his heroic brother. He became one of the founding members of the Legion of Super-Villains, a coalition created to oppose the ideals of the Legion of Super-Heroes and to impose fear and dominance upon the galaxy. Under his leadership, the Legion of Super-Villains waged numerous campaigns against the Legion, seeking to undermine their influence and corrupt their younger members. Mekt’s obsession with Garth often turned personal, resulting in several confrontations where he sought not only victory but also psychological vengeance against his family. (Superboy v1 #147)
During later conflicts, Mekt’s mental instability became increasingly pronounced. His hatred of his twin-born world and resentment toward his siblings deepened into delusions of grandeur, leading him to believe he alone understood the true nature of power and individuality. On multiple occasions, he attempted to coerce or manipulate Ayla into joining him, viewing her as the only family member who could understand his alienation. His recurring defeats at the hands of the Legion and his own siblings only exacerbated his instability, driving him further into obsession and despair. Despite this, Mekt occasionally showed flashes of humanity, particularly when confronted with his family’s compassion, though these moments were fleeting and often drowned out by his self-destructive pride. (Legion of Super-Heroes v2 #294)
Mekt escaped confinement and returned with a renewed vendetta against the Legion. He demonstrated calculated strategy, attacking infrastructure in Metropolis with bursts of lightning that knocked out power grids and endangered citizens. The destructive display drew the Legion into conflict with him, where Mekt confronted Garth again, declaring his bitterness at being the 'forgotten' sibling of the Ranzz family. The battle saw him launching rapid arcs of lightning, knocking Legionnaires back and forcing defensive formations. Ultimately, combined efforts from Brainiac 5 and Mon-El brought him down, trapping him in a containment field that neutralized his energy output. (Adventure Comics v1 #372) Later, Lightning Lord resurfaced in another organized strike by the Legion of Super-Villains. This time, he pursued a more personal vendetta, specifically targeting Lightning Lad. He orchestrated coordinated ambushes against smaller groups of Legionnaires, using his electric powers to disable their flight rings and force them into freefall. He demonstrated his tactical edge by leading his team through Metropolis, cornering his brother in a brutal one-on-one confrontation. In the clash, Mekt used sustained lightning to overwhelm Garth’s defenses, nearly killing him before the intervention of other Legion members shifted the battle. The villains were subdued, with Mekt dragged back into custody, seething over his defeat. (Superboy v1 #208)
Lightning Lord formed a new Legion of Super-Villains, with each of them swearing a blood oath to kill at least one Legionnaire. Lightning Lord swore on his oath to kill his brother Lightning Lad, which he said had been his destiny since he was born. Dream Girl had a prophetic vision about one of the Legion dying in the near future, and went on a retreat to the gambling planet of Ventura with Star Boy to take her mind off a grim future. Micro Lad robbed a casino’s bank in the name of the Imskian liberation movement, and when the Legionnaires confronted him, he shrank out of sight. They called in Shrinking Violet, who was eager to deal with the man who’d caused her so much pain in the past. She beat him to a pulp, further infuriated when he attempted to take her hostage again, but a dimensional portal opened up and whisked Micro Lad to safety. Colossal Boy, who had only ever lived at home, and then at Legion headquarters, got an apartment with Yera. They settled into their new place, and Colossal Boy learned from the news that his mother Marte Allon had resigned as Earth President. Mon-El, Shadow Lass, Chameleon Boy, Ultra Boy and Timber Wold helped restore the topography of Daxam, and while Shady and Mon-El were hopeful for the planet’s future the cynical Chameleon Boy reminded them that the Daxamites were currently extremely unpopular with the U.P. They received a distress call from Takron-Galtos about a renegade Daxamite destroying the facility and laying waste to the guards. They found Darkseid’s acolyte Ol-Vir was responsible, and had freed a number of visitors. He committed a ritual sacrifice to Darkseid, killing one of the guards with his heat-vision before the Legion could stop him. Mon-El called Ol-Vir a disgrace to Daxam, and threatened to break every bone in his body, while his fellow Legionnaires fended off the escaped prisoners. Ol-Vir initially scoffed at Mon-El, but the battle turned against him, and when a dimensional portal opened up and a voice offered him membership in the Legion of Super-Villains he decided he might as well accept, and flew through. The Portal also scooped up Ron-Karr and Chameleon Chief. Light Lass, happy to retire as a Legionnaire and let her brother play hero, joined her friend Sarah’s commune on Winarth. Light Lass said she was sick of adventure, and much happier farming and looking after children. Unbeknownst to her she was being tracked and observed by M. Wayne, a private investigator hired by timer Wolf. Radiation Roy ambushed her, and after knocking he rout with a blast of radiation, a dimensional portal opened up, taking them both back to the Legion of Super-Villains. (Legion of Super-Heroes v3 #1)
Light Lass awoke in chains in a cell, and Lightning Lord promised her he wanted to help her, not hurt her. He said he loved her, and all the proof she needed was that she was still alive. He asked her to join the Legion of Super-Villains and help him kill Lightning Lad, saying he had been talking to the storm, and the storm had assured him she’d come to him. Light Lass turned him down, saying he was more insane than ever. Element Lad tracked the resurgence of the Legion of Super-Villains across several planets, brief his team, and realized he was in for a major test of his leadership. The League of Super-Assassins joined with the Legion of Super-Villains, and Lightning Lord sent them and Magno Lad to M-17W, a manufacturing center in the galactic core, to steal the plant’s fusion powerspheres. Shvaugn Erin alerted the Legion, and Dawnstar and Wildfire responded first, but Lazon gave Dawnstar radiation sickness with his light powers, and Magno Lad ripped Wildfire’s containment suit apart. Shadow Lass, Mon-El, Ultra Boy, Chameleon Boy and Timber Wolf arrived as support, but the villains escaped using a dimensional rift opened by Zymyr. Shadow Lass treated Dawnstar, while Chameleon Boy brought Wildfire a new containment suit. They pursued the villains, but were ambushed by Terrus, who attacked their spaceship with a meteor shower. Lightning Lord called a meeting of his Legion to discuss their plans, and Ol-Vir asked if great Darkseid would approve of what they were doing, saying their actions should always be in accord with his dark lord. Esper Lass used her psychic powers to calm him down. Esper Lass said he was a lunatic, and Lightning Lord agreed but stated having a Daxamite on their side was worth it. Sun Emperor stated that insane people were dangerous before grabbing servant girl Thora, forcing a kiss on her and incinerating her, shock ng several of his teammates. Cosmic Boy checked in with the Legion Academy, and alerted Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl about the danger. They were on Medicus One, with Saturn Girl receiving prenatal treatment and her delivery date fast approaching. Lightning Lad worried about the safety of his sister, not knowing she was already in captivity. Zymyr opened a spacewarp that stole the polymer screen around Earth that served environmental functions and controlled space traffic. Element Lad, Lightning Lad, and despite everyone else’s objections, Saturn Girl, responded. Saturn Girl went into labor, and Tyr was disappointed to be fighting a pregnant woman, but contented himself with the fact that she’d be easy to kill. Zymyr ended the confrontation, warping his teammates away, and Element Lad and Lightning Lad rushed Saturn Girl to the Medicus One Maternity Ward. Dr. Gym’ll told Lightning Lad he’d been paging him, and that if he wasn’t planning on pulling any more moronic stunts it was time to get in the delivery room. Element Lad, who’d been pacing back and forth in worry, fainted. Queen Projects and Karate Kid flew back to Orando after their honeymoon, but the Legion of Super-Villains were waiting for them, and Magno Lad, Hunter and Mist Master brought their spaceship down. They took the heroes legion rings and sent out the alarm signal, saying the Legion would come running to their own doom. (Legion of Super-Heroes v3 #2)
Post-Zero Hour
Born on Winath, Mekt was raised oddly, being virtually unique in that unlike all other Winathians, he had no twin. This unbalanced him, and drove him to having some antisocial and sociopathic tendencies. After gaining superpowers, Mekt left home without explanation, and began a criminal career across the Galaxy, using his abilities to take what he wished and kill whomever he pleased. During this period, at some point, Mekt began to use the name Lightning Lord. In the meantime, unaware of his new life, Mekt's brother Garth began searching for him, a task interrupted by Garth's joining the Legion of Super-Heroes. They wouldn't meet again until after Garth had left both the Legion and the Workforce, and was jailed by the Science Police in a case of mistaken identity for Mekt's murders. After busting Garth out of prison and taking him back to Korbal, where he attempted to massacre the Lightning Beasts, and announced his attention to kill both Garth, and their sister Ayla. (Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #73)
By eliminating all others with Lightning powers, as well as the creatures capable of imbuing others with them in the first place, Mekt intended to become unique once again as the only person alive with his special gift. When Ayla using her SP contacts from the Legion also showed up on the planet, the three of them fought it out. Although Mekt managed to sever Garth's arm with his powers, when Garth and Ayla teamed up and used their powers in tandem, they were able to defeat him. Mekt, drained of his electrical charge, was taken into custody by the Science Police. (Legionnaires v1 #30)
He and his two comrades later emerged in an altered timeline when Batman saved the life of his parents. Lightning Lord and his allies operated in hiding in the world where they worked alongside Ra's al Ghul with them helping him take over Earth. They then waited for the arrival of the time travelling Superman and Batman where they fought against their 'sons' to prevent them from restoring history. They fought against the pair but were ultimately defeated with Lightning Lord and his comrades taken in to be returned to their future in order to restore the timeline. (Superman/Batman v1 #18)
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Lightning Lord was a human male from Winath with a tall, muscular build. He had distinctive blonde hair, often depicted as swept back, and sharp features resembling his brother Lightning Lad. His costume in his first appearances consisted of a striking green and yellow bodysuit with lightning bolt motifs across the chest and arms, emphasizing his electrical powers. The uniform was form-fitting, designed to project both intimidation and symbolic connection to his brother, while setting him apart with darker tones. (Superboy v1 #147)
Lightning Lord’s personality was defined by bitterness, jealousy, and aggression. In his earliest appearances, he displayed a strong inferiority complex, resenting his siblings Garth and Ayla for their bond while he saw himself as an outsider. He demonstrated a volatile temper, prone to violent outbursts and domineering behavior, especially in battles where he focused obsessively on defeating Lightning Lad. His interactions with other villains showed a capacity for leadership, but it was underscored by his ruthless, authoritarian tendencies. (Superboy v1 #147)
His isolation as a singleton on Winath left him psychologically scarred, developing into deep-seated resentment toward his twin-born world and even his own family. He viewed the Legion of Super-Heroes as hypocritical idealists and considered himself a visionary who had embraced the harsh truth of survival and dominance. While capable of intelligence and strategy, Mekt’s volatile emotions often undermined his plans, leading to impulsive decisions driven by hatred and wounded pride. Despite his cruelty, he was not entirely devoid of conscience, occasionally displaying protectiveness toward Ayla and even brief regret for his crimes. (Superboy v1 #147)
Powers and abilities
Physiologically, Lightning Lord was a human from the planet Winath. Like his siblings, he gained electrical powers after exposure to the lightning beasts of Korbal, an event that gave all three Ranzz children the ability to generate and manipulate electricity. Mekt’s powers allowed him to release bolts of lightning, control electrical currents, and project devastating blasts strong enough to disable machinery and incapacitate multiple super-powered opponents. His abilities stemmed directly from his body’s bioelectric energy being amplified by the Korbal incident. (Superboy v1 #147)
Lightning Lord possessed the same bio-electrical manipulation powers as his siblings but refined them with greater intensity and aggression. He could project massive bolts of lightning capable of incapacitating multiple opponents, generate electromagnetic fields to deflect attacks, and even absorb energy to recharge himself. His mastery of electrical control allowed him to ionize the air, disable electronic systems, and propel himself through the sky at incredible speeds. Unlike his siblings, Mekt’s power output was unstable due to his erratic mental state, often causing his energy surges to become more destructive and less controlled. This volatility, while dangerous, made him one of the most formidable electrical beings of his era. (Adventure Comics v1 #308)
He could tap into generators that provided electrical energy in order to greatly enhance his own powers. (Adventure Comics v1 #355)
