Lennier

Lennier is an extraterrestrial television character who features in Babylon 5.

Just as Delenn was an acolyte of Dukhat, Lennier was the faithful acolyte of Minbari Ambassador Delenn for five years. A member of the Third Fane of Chu'Domo of the religious caste and a fierce fighter, he later joined the Rangers. He had family aboard the Minbari flagship Black Star when it was destroyed by Babylon 5 commander John Sheridan. Though other Minbari felt much animosity towards Sheridan, as they felt he'd acted dishonorably in destroying it, Lennier held no hard feelings, apparently understanding why Sheridan had done it, despite having family on the Black Star when it was destroyed.

At first, his duties were small but he did sit in for Delenn for the extradition vote on Deathwalker. That same year, while Delenn was briefly away from the station he was invited by the Centauri ambassador Londo Mollari to join him on what he called an 'educational' life experience which turned out to be joining him in a poker game in a seedy bar on the station. Although the finer points of poker were lost on Lennier, his talent for probability made him a lot of winnings. When Londo was caught cheating, Lennier defended him from the angry players which led to an ugly brawl. Afterwards, Lennier covered for Londo by claiming full responsibility through a simple misunderstanding. As both Lennier and Londo had diplomatic immunity, and promised full restitution for damages, the matter was dropped. Lennier's selfless act however won him Londo's admiration and respect.

Later in 2259 when Delenn began her transformation, Lennier was called upon to tell the Humans, namely Sheridan and Ivanova, the reason for the Minbari surrender at the Battle of the Line. Lennier also watched over her during her transformation. Throughout 2259, Lennier's role as aide to Delenn seemed to widen and deepen as was his appearances at important occasions. He accompanied Delenn to Minbar when she was to be removed from the Grey Council because of the self-imposed, biological changes she underwent. It was during this period that Lennier swore himself to Delenn's side in spite of her telling it would effect him as well. Later, he was an instrumental in the exposure of a conspiracy within his clan against Sheridan's credibility, which could have removed him from command and was further intended to increase tensions with Earth, from those who felt sleighted about surrendering.

In 2260, when Delenn and Sheridan with the Rangers began to secretly fight the recent re-emergence of the Shadows. Lennier frequently accompanied the two on missions of very high risk. He was also seriously injured early that year in a terrorist bombing saving ambassador Mollari. Later that year, Lennier's duties became much more important when he began, probably in association with the Rangers and others, running weapons, technology and information from place to place to help fight the Shadows.

Personality and attributes

Eventually it was revealed that Lennier was secretly in love with Delenn. However he explained to Marcus Cole that it was "not romantic love as you would understand it, something nobler."

Lennier did not act on his feelings due to her involvement with John Sheridan. Lennier did confess his feelings to her when he and Delenn were both trapped in hyperspace facing death, but Delenn, who had long known of his feelings for her, feigned that she hadn't heard his confession in order to spare him embarrassment. Lennier's feelings later caused his downfall. When Sheridan suffered an accident aboard a White Star ("Objects at Rest"), Lennier, seeing for the opportunity to remove his 'competition', refused to help him and fled, for a short moment leaving him for dead. Almost immediately after he realized the foolishness of his actions and did come back, but by then Sheridan had managed to rescue himself. Lennier ran away, deeply ashamed of what he had done, and was never heard from again, except for a final, untraceable call to Delenn in which he asked her and Sheridan for forgiveness. This would likely constitute his "Betrayal of the Rangers" as predicted by Morden.

Lennier and Vir often shared their thoughts and feelings on the many hassles and pressures of being ambassadorial aides, usually meeting at a drinks bar on the Zocalo at late times.
