History
Origin
The Legion of Super-Heroes Headquarters was the headquarters of the Legion of Super-Heroes in the 30th century. Originally, the Legionnaires operated from the Legion Clubhouse that served as a gathering place for their members. (Adventure Comics v1 #247) At one point, the Legion's powers went out of their respective control leading to them inadvertently damaging the super-hero Clubhouse. (Adventure Comics v1 #300) A fearsome battle against the Fatal Five led to the Clubhouse being badly damaged with the Legion considering rebuilding it after a period of rest. (Adventure Comics v1 #366) Ultimately, the United Planets decided that in recognition of the Legion's service that they would fund the creation of a new headquarters for the superhero team. (Adventure Comics v1 #367) Afterwards, the male Legionnaires, including Superboy and Karate Kid, began training and interacting within the new headquarters' advanced facilities, highlighting its functionality. At this time, an alien ambassador named Thora from a matriarchal world, who expressed her disdain for males. Unbeknownst to the team, Thora used a radiation-emitting bracelet to secretly affect miniature statues she had carved of the female Legionnaires, which in turn vastly increased their powers and subtly altered their minds. The female members, including Supergirl, Saturn Girl, and Shadow Lass, found themselves with enhanced abilities and an altered attitude towards their male counterparts. This led to a division within the team, with the boys suspecting a strange space disease and quarantining the girls within the new headquarters. However, when the male Legionnaires became trapped during a riot at the Prison Citadel on Mount Metropolis, the girls broke quarantine to rescue them. The boys then chastised the girls, leading to an angry confrontation and a physical battle within the headquarters, where the powered-up heroines easily defeated their male teammates. Thora gloated over her success, but Supergirl eventually broke free from the mind control due to her strong feelings for Brainiac 5. Supergirl then exposed Thora's plot and caused the ambassador's bracelet to self-destruct, which returned the female Legionnaires to normal and ended the conflict within the headquarters. Thora then took her own life as punishment for her failure. (Adventure Comics v1 #368)
At their headquarters, the teams newest member, Shadow Lass, was exploring the sub-basement areas and stumbled upon a sealed vault. Out of curiosity, and unaware of the contents, she began to open the valve of the vault door, which released a small amount of air and inadvertently revived the incredibly powerful, magical tyrant Mordru, who had been buried alive there and trapped in a comatose state as his only weakness. Mon-El tried to stop her before the door fully opened, but it was too late; Mordru was awakened and immediately began a powerful assault. Terrified by his overwhelming power, the four Legionnaires hastily used their Time Cube located within the headquarters' control room to escape to the 20th century Smallville to hide, leaving the headquarters behind as Mordru pursued them through time. For a year, the Legion also began a secret project at creating an independent headquarters allowing them to be independent from the United Planets. Much of the private funding came from R.J. Brande who wanted to aid the Legionnaires in having a base of operations that suited them. This led to construction of Legion World that was an artificial planetoid whose location was in deep space where it was kept cloaked to prevent detection. (Legion v1 #3)
