History

Kroot Carnivore mercenaries.

The Kroot were an avian based species that were native to the planet Pech located in the Ultima Segmentum of the Milky Way galaxy. (WD: Index Xenos)

Thousands of years ago, an Ork asteroid fortress, called a Rok, crash-landed on Pech where they surviving crew found themselves to the native warrior race that had a taste for flesh. The Orks were quickly destroyed with the Kroot coming to make their lair in the crashed vessel where over several generations they began to mimic technology from the DNA they consumed from the dead Ork Meks. From the site of the crashed Rok, the first Kroot city was built as the species inherited knowledge became more commonplace. Within a few thousand years, there were five Kroot hives on Pech's main continent, and factory farming and mining were common. This period became part of the Kroot's expansionist phase as they began construction of warp-capable warspheres that could allow them to travel across the stars. (WD: Index Xenos)

Overview

In appearance, the Kroot were a humanoid race whose physiology indicated that the roots to their origins were traced to avian ancestry. This was evident in the fact that they retained beaks and had a light almost hollow bone structure with them having four digits on their hands and feet. Their skin was rough with small barbed spines protruding from the flesh that were similar to the elongated quills on their heads. Skin pigmentation varied from earthly brown colours and dappled greens to vibrant orange. Feeding direction was noted to influence the coloration of each Kroot Kindred with these varying greatly from one another. The species were noted to mature quickly with the most rapid period of growth occurring in the first ten years of their life. By 12 years of age, they were considered an adult with a lifespan capable of going over a century where their skin became increasingly pitted and leathery in the last few years of their life. The Kroot were tall and their bodies had a wiriness to them that appeared deceptively fragile. In actuality, Kroot musculature was extremely powerful and composed of dense fibre spindles with a greater power-to-mass ratio than was found in humans. Swift muscle contractions created a whiplash effect, allowing the Kroot to deliver powerful blows with great rapidity. On the ground, the Kroot tended to move with a bounding, hopping gait but, when in dense forests, they could spring from tree to tree at great speed. The Kroot favoured primitive garb: harnesses worked from the hides of animals and adorned with bones, handcrafted amulets and circlets. (WD: Index Xenos)

Kroot family groupings were referred to as a Kindred with it being common to have particular tribal markings painted on the skin. (WD: Index Xenos)
