Biography
Knuckles the Echidna (Japanese: ナックルズ・ザ・エキドゥナ, Hepburn: Nakkuruzu za Ekiduna) was a male echidna born as the last surviving member of the Knuckles Clan where he was raised on Angel Island.
However, Knuckles' own past was a mystery to him; he knew nothing of how he came to be, his ancestral roots, or even the details of the Master Emerald he was supposed to protect, and believed himself to be the last of his kind entirely. Despite this, he chose to spent his life as the Master Emerald's guardian, never questioning it. Knuckles knew as well from innate knowledge that his duty was his fate, and he was content with that. For much of his life, Knuckles stayed close to the Master Emerald's shrine, steadfastly protecting it while having little to no contact with the outside world, becoming friends with all the animals and the nature itself on Angel Island.

Personality and attributes
In appearance, Knuckles was a male anthropomorphic echidna with red fur that covers most of his body, a black nose on his peach-skinned muzzle, a white crescent-shaped patch of fur on his chest, and amethyst eyes. He also has seven dreadlock-like spines around the sides and back of his head and a medium-sized, tri-crooked tail. For attire, Knuckles wears red and yellow shoes with green cuffs, light gray soles, and metallic, sextuple-bolted plates on top. He also wears large, white, mitten-like gloves with sock-like cuffs and two pointy, spiked knuckles on each hand.
He was a loner by nature who tended to be independent, headstrong and serious though was gullible and short-tempered to a fault.
He was entirely devoted to his duty, spending most of his time on Angel Island protecting the Master Emerald, and rarely cares about anything that is of no importance. Knuckles is fiercely loyal to Angel Island and does whatever is in his power to protect it. He prefers to stay close to the Master Emerald's shrine to keep a watchful eye over everything at his home. Despite this devotion, the echidna is willing to leave his duty whenever his help is needed.
Powers and abilities
Among his noted traits were his super strength and the two spike-like knuckles on each of his hands with which he used to climb walls by digging them onto a surface. In battle, he used brawny physique to lift objects many times his size and weight, while his powerful fists enable him to smash through boulders. It was said that he was an unstoppable power in a fight.
While slower than Sonic, Knuckles was depicted as one of the strongest characters and a skilled martial artist: his brawny physique allowed him to lift objects many times his size and weight, while his powerful fists enable him to smash boulders and break through solid ground.
He was capable of achieving a more powerful super form by using the Chaos Emeralds to transform himself into Super Knuckles. Meanwhile, use of the Super Emeralds allowed him to achieve an even more powerful state called Hyper Knuckles.
It was revealed that he was the sole surviving descendant of the echidna race from the Knuckles Clan.
