Biography

Origin

Sir Edmund Dorrance

Edmund subsequently moved to Hong Kong and used the money he had acquired to start a double life. To the public, he was a Hong Kong businessman worth millions, with interests in shipping, banking, and electronics, while in secret he was one of the most feared men in Asia, a giant in the heroin trade. (Robin v1 #2) Taking the name King Snake, he found willing soldiers in the Ghost Dragons, a Chinese youth gang operating in Macau, Kowloon, and Hong Kong. (Robin v1 #3) Although he had a strong power base in Hong Kong, he could not hope to stay when the island was handed over to China. He began extending his interests into France and the United States. He decided to lay waste to the city of Hong Kong rather than have it be soiled by falling into Chinese hands. His plans to release a Nazi-developed plague after leaving Hong Kong were foiled by Robin, assisted by Clyde Rawlins and Lady Shiva, both of whom wanted revenge against King Snake. (Robin v1 #4) After the attack of his headquarters in Hong Kong, much of his gang was captured and he was presumed dead at the hands of Lady Shiva. (Robin v1 #5)

King Snake was one of the many villains raised from the dead in Gotham City to join the new Black Lantern Corps as zombies during Blackest Night along with Abbatoir, Deacon Blackfire, Blockbuster, Magpie, KGBeast, the Trigger Twins, and the Ventriloquist. (Blackest Night: Batman v1 #1) He was seen terrorizing the city, and tearing out the hearts of innocents to feed on their emotions and life force when they're feeling the most fear. (Blackest Night: Batman v1 #2)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Damian Wayne came to see to join a tournament hosted by the mysterious League of Lazarus but had to prove himself to be allowed entry into it. This saw him fighting in an underground fighting match where his opponent was King Snake. The mercenary was effortlessly beaten by Damian who had humiliated him and his actions led to agents of the League giving him a token that directed him to Lazarus Island. (Robin v3 #1)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, King Snake was a male human of British Caucasian descent who possessed a strikingly cold and predatory countenance. He was defined by a weathered, severe face featuring clouded, sightless eyes that had been blinded during his time as a mercenary, yet he maintained a piercing gaze that suggested he could see far more than he let on. His hair was blonde, often kept short or slicked back, framing a visage that was frequently set in a mask of grim determination. He had a receding hairline with thin, grey hair and a sharp, angular face marked by a high forehead and a prominent, narrow nose. His body type was lean yet densely muscled and corded, reflecting a high degree of physical discipline and martial arts training. His body shape was imposing and powerfully built, standing as a tall, broad-shouldered man with a musculature honed by years of elite martial arts training and survival in the world's most dangerous war zones. This formidable frame was typically draped in functional, dark tactical gear or heavy military-style fatigues that prioritised utility over fashion, often consisting of a high-collared jacket and durable trousers tucked into heavy combat boots. His primary attire consisted of a dark, traditional Chinese-style tunic or changshan with long sleeves and a high Mandarin collar. This garment featured a large, stylized yellow or gold snake emblem prominently embroidered on the chest. He wore matching dark trousers that allowed for a wide range of movement and simple, dark slippers on his feet. His overall look was minimalist and focused on his identity as a master of Eastern combat, eschewing traditional western military or superhero costuming in favour of a more traditionalist, functional martial arts aesthetic. (Robin v1 #1)

Powers and abilities

King Snake was a baseline human with no innate superhuman mutations or metahuman genes, having been born as Sir Edmund Dorrance, a British citizen and former member of the Royal Artillery. His status as a non-powered human meant that his effectiveness in combat was entirely the result of rigorous physical conditioning and the mastery of several of the world's deadliest martial arts, which earned him the fearsome reputation of being 'the most dangerous man alive'. Despite his lack of supernatural gifts, his biological nature afforded him a unique set of heightened sensory capabilities that developed as a natural compensatory response to his blindness. On a basic level, these honed senses allowed him to operate with perfect precision in total darkness, granting him a level of environmental awareness that rivalled those with sight and enabling him to track opponents through sound and air vibrations alone. This extreme discipline transformed his perceived physical disability into a tactical asset, allowing him to perceive his surroundings with a clarity that made him an equal to the most elite street-level heroes. (Robin v1 #2)

Sir Edmund Dorrance, known as King Snake, demonstrated mastery of several martial arts disciplines, specifically a lethal style of kung fu that utilised nerve strikes and high-impact blows. Despite being entirely blind, he exhibited sensory capabilities that allowed him to perceive his surroundings and track the movements of multiple opponents with high precision, often reacting to subtle auditory and atmospheric cues. He showed exceptional physical strength and agility, enabling him to engage in prolonged hand-to-hand combat against trained adversaries. His skills included the ability to strike with enough force to cause internal organ failure or instant death. Additionally, he demonstrated tactical leadership and organizational skills as the head of a global mercenary group known as the Ghost Dragons, coordinating large-scale criminal operations and managing a network of loyal subordinates. He also displayed a high tolerance for physical pain and a disciplined mental focus that allowed him to remain combat-effective in high-stress environments. (Robin v1 #2)

Notes

  • King Snake was created by Chuck Dixon and Tom Lyle where he made his first appearance in Robin v1 #2 (February, 1991).

In other media

Television

  • In Gotham, King Snake himself did not make an appearance though was indirectly mentioned in the setting of the live-action television series. At one point Eduardo Dorrance joined the army and served alongside James Gordon. Both men became friends and saved each others' life on more than one occasion. During the war, Gordon earned Eduardo's respect and gratitude, but Jim eventually decided to leave the army in order to return to Gotham City and join the GCPD. Shortly after, Dorrance and the rest of his military task force were captured during the war in Santa Prisca and imprisoned at Peña Duro, which he would later describe as "the darkest hell on earth". Left there to die by the government, Eduardo and his fellow soldiers were forced to endure the cruel games of the prison guards. They would choose one of the soldiers and bury him alive, then take bets on whether he could dig his way out or not. But when he managed to free himself from his grave, they would bury the soldier even deeper and play again. All of Eduardo's fellow soldiers died during their prison sentence, leaving him as the sole survivor of the squad who managed to endure the games of the guards. When Nyssa al Ghul came to Peña Duro, Dorrance stood out to her and she pulled him out of the prison, promising to give him a new purpose. Four years after Jim Gordon had left the military, Eduardo Dorrance was put in command of the Delta Force by Nyssa and sent to Gotham City, seemingly to help restore it from its No Man's Land status.
