Biography

Keyser Söze

On a ship in San Pedro Bay, a faceless figure identified as 'Keyser' speaks with an injured man called Keaton. The two talk briefly, then Keyser appears to shoot Keaton before setting the ship ablaze. The next day, FBI Agent Jack Baer and U.S. Customs Special Agent Dave Kujan arrive in San Pedro separately to investigate what happened on the boat. There appear to be only two survivors: Roger 'Verbal' Kint, a con artist with cerebral palsy, and a hospitalized Hungarian criminal named Arkosh Kovash. Baer interrogates the severely burned Kovash in the hospital, who claims that Keyser Söze, a Turkish criminal mastermind with a fearsome reputation, was in the harbor "killing many men". Kovash begins to describe Söze through an interpreter while a police sketch artist draws a rendering of Söze's face. Meanwhile, Verbal has testified at length about the incident in exchange for near-total immunity. After making his statement to the district attorney and while waiting to post bail on a relatively minor weapons charge, Verbal is placed in the cluttered office of San Pedro Police Sergeant Jeffrey Rabin where Kujan demands to hear his story from the beginning. Verbal's tale starts six weeks earlier in New York City.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, the true identity of Keyser Söze was a slender, average-built Caucasian male who possessed sharp features, calculating dark eyes, and short, neatly cropped brown hair. To maintain his absolute anonymity and completely disarm the suspicions of international law enforcement, he adopted a brilliant physical disguise, masquerading as a weak, physically disabled petty criminal who suffered from severe cerebral palsy. In this manufactured persona, he carried himself with a pronounced, halting limp, kept his left arm permanently curled and disabled against his chest, and struggled to light a simple cigarette with his trembling fingers. He wore a simple, un-styled beige civilian jacket over a loose-fitting collared shirt and baggy grey trousers, presenting a completely harmless, pathetic, and unimposing visual profile. However, the moment he stepped safely away from the police station, his physical posture instantly shifted, completely dropping the limp to adopt a tall, confident, and smooth-walking criminal silhouette as he donned a luxurious overcoat and stepped into a private vehicle.

Keyser Söze was a ruthless crime lord with a mythic reputation in the criminal underworld. Using his skills as a con artist and criminal mastermind, Söze outsmarted every single policeman and succeeded in his plan to kill the one man who could identify him to the authorities.

As 'Verbal', Söze played the part of a weak, dimwitted pawn of larger forces. Ironically, it was through appearing small and weak that he was able to outsmart the police and continue his career as a powerful crime lord.

Powers and abilities

Keyser Söze possessed no powers or high-tech tactical gear but instead relying entirely on his absolute genius-level intellect, master-class manipulation, and an unparalleled power of improvisation. He wielded an extraordinary psychological capability to orchestrate complex, multi-layered criminal conspiracies, utilizing simple visual cues from a police bulletin board to spontaneously fabricate an entire, highly convincing criminal narrative on the fly during a federal interrogation. His primary personal asset was his total, cold-blooded psychological resolve; he harboured a complete lack of human empathy or self-preservation instinct, which granted him the terrifying tactical advantage to destroy his own family and wipe out entire syndicates to protect his anonymity. Furthermore, his absolute command over international black-market logistics allowed him to seamlessly monitor global intelligence, manipulate high-profile law enforcement assets, and vanish completely into thin air, proving his own philosophical doctrine that his greatest trick was convincing the world he did not exist.
