Biography
Kate Margaret Power was a female human who was the youngest child of Margaret Power and her husband Dr. James Power who was a physicist that worked for the United States government on a means of producing large quantities of energy cheaply through combining matter and anti-matter. (Power Pack v1 #1)
Around this time, an alien Kymellians named Aelfyre Whitemane learnt of Dr. Power's anti-matter experiments and looked to prevent this discovery. This was because he believed that despite Power's good intentions that the breakthrough would lead to a chain reaction which would destroy the Earth. In addition, he was aware that his people's age-old foes the Zn'rx intended to claim the technology for themselves in order to use it to conquer worlds. The Snarks captured Dr. Power and his wife Margaret, intending to force him to reveal the secret of his device. Whitemane saved the Powers' children. Alex, Julia, Jack, and Katie, from being captured, but he himself was fatally wounded in the process. Dying, Whitemane transferred each of his superhuman powers into one of the four children, and asked them to use their new abilities to save their world. She observed Alex and Julie experimenting with their abilities, and when Jack briefly displayed his own power, Katie shrank slightly to remain close to the adults while avoiding being trampled. She tried to follow Alex as he moved around the room, shrinking in size to dodge furniture and slipping under a chair to avoid contact with her siblings’ rapidly shifting positions. When her older siblings attempted minor heroic feats, Katie crouched behind a table, observing openings and signaling to Alex when she saw potential hazards in their path, effectively using her shrinking ability to maintain proximity without interfering. She also experimented with intangibility for the first time, slipping her hand through the edge of a table to retrieve a small object, testing the limits of her new powers. (Power Pack v1 #1)
Katie accompanied her siblings outside of the house, following them as they navigated city streets during their first public test of their abilities. She shrank and darted between obstacles to avoid being seen by passersby while keeping visual contact with Jack and Julie. When a car suddenly swerved toward the group, Katie immediately shrank to a fraction of her normal size, allowing her to avoid the path of the vehicle entirely. Later, she became intangible to pass through a locked gate that blocked her siblings’ movement, emerging on the other side to signal them to follow. Throughout these movements, she continuously tested her powers, shrinking or becoming partially intangible to slip past tight spaces, small alleyways, and street debris without touching anything, effectively shadowing her siblings’ path while remaining undetected. (Power Pack v1 #2) During a confrontation with a small-scale villain attempting to steal technology, Katie shrank to slip under the villain’s guard, moving close enough to observe the enemy’s equipment. She used intangibility to avoid being grabbed as the villain swung toward her, then tapped on the shoulder of a nearby crate to knock it over, distracting him and giving her siblings a momentary advantage. When the villain attempted to escape through a window, Katie shrank further to slip through the gap first, peeking around corners to relay the villain’s movements to Alex and Julie. She experimented with passing through solid objects again, slipping a hand through a metal grate to manipulate a lever on the other side, testing the coordination of her powers and learning to interact with the environment while intangible. (Power Pack v1 #3)
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Katie Power was a young Caucasian girl with short brown hair and a round, expressive face reflecting her youth and energy. She wore practical, age-appropriate clothing for a child, which included skirts, shorts, or casual tops, designed to allow freedom of movement during her activities. Her costume as part of the Power Pack, introduced later, featured a form-fitting design with accent colors and a 'P' emblem to signify her membership, though her civilian appearance remained simple and functional in her earliest appearances. (Power Pack v1 #1) After gaining her powers, she decided to take the name Energizer. (Power Pack v1 #1)
Katie’s personality was energetic, curious, and highly observant. She consistently sought to participate in her siblings’ activities, taking initiative to experiment with her powers, and showed careful attention to detail when navigating obstacles or monitoring her surroundings. Despite her young age, she demonstrated determination and a willingness to take calculated risks, balancing caution with action. She interacted closely with her siblings, responding to their instructions, following their lead, and contributing actively in situations that required stealth or reconnaissance (Power Pack v1 #1)
Alex came to observe that Katie was no longer a 'dumb little kid'. (Power Pack v1 #36)
Powers and abilities
Katie Power was originally a normal human being with no inherent powers or abilities. As a human, it was note that her species had a phenomenal adaptable molecule structure. (Power Pack v1 #1) When she was 5 years old, she was able to maintain a journal after she began to copy the Punisher's use of his War Journal. (Strange Tales v2 #13) A noted genius, she was a noted genius who has skipped several grades of school and could program supercomputers. (Power Pack v2 #1)
She later came to encounter the Aelfyre Whitemane was able to alter her body cells in order to allow them to mimic some of his abilities. The transfer of power was said to had created some bizarre variations of the Kymellians powers. She could disintegrate any kind of matter, including water and air molecules, store the energy and expel it in balls of explosive energy. It was said that she could store energy like a battery which she used for her abilities. (Power Pack v1 #1)
Her powerset also consisted of molecular density manipulation, allowing her to shrink to a fraction of her normal size or become intangible to pass through solid objects. This enabled her to navigate confined spaces, avoid physical attacks, and interact with the environment in ways others could not. Her abilities required concentration and careful control, as improper use could leave her partially phased or trapped within solid matter. Additionally, her powers offered temporary protection from injury while in shrunken or intangible form, providing strategic advantages during confrontations and exploratory actions.
