Biography

Kasper Cole in Black Panther v3 #60.

Kasper Cole

Several months ago, he came to find a costume that was bullet proof and lighter than a bullet proof vest. Unknown to him, it actually was the habit of the Black Panther though it was damaged with one arm missing. Despite that, Kasper began to wear it underneath his clothes where it helped protect him from gunshots. One day, he was out with his crew where they were attacked though Cole was protected by the Black Panther habit. Later on, his superiors came to suspend him for 5 days for not wearing a vest with Kasper unable to reveal the fact that he had the Black Panther habit thus forcing him to accept the decision. Unable to operate as a police officer, Cole decided to use the Black Panther guise to secretly operate as a vigilante and to fight crime on the streets until his suspension was over. After failing to recruit Kasper, Sal had Kasper and his fellow officers ambushed. Thanks to the costume, Kasper survived, though the other officers were hospitalized in the ICU. (Black Panther v3 #50) After he discovered T’Challa’s costume in his possession, he used it in the field as both protection and as a symbolic tool to command respect from the criminal underworld. Though untrained in Wakandan combat traditions, Kasper displayed resourcefulness and determination, stepping into a role he barely understood but felt compelled to adopt. His early actions showed a man caught between the system he worked for and the myth he had stumbled into, setting the stage for his dual life as a cop and as a makeshift vigilante. (Black Panther v3 #51)

Kasper’s world became more complicated as his use of the Black Panther identity attracted unwanted attention. While wearing the Panther garb, he directly confronted drug dealers and street-level criminals, using the fear of the mask and his badge to force them into retreat. Yet his actions created conflicts with fellow officers, some of whom viewed him with suspicion, while others turned a blind eye to corruption in the ranks. Kasper’s balancing act was increasingly precarious — on one hand, he was still bound to the duties of his day job as an NYPD officer, while on the other, he found himself growing into the mantle of the Black Panther, if only in name. This duality pushed him into moral and physical conflicts that forced him to think about what justice meant and how far he was willing to go beyond the boundaries of the law. (Black Panther v3 #52) Kasper continued to navigate the blurred line between police officer and vigilante, expanding his reach as the “new” Panther within Harlem. He became more assertive in his activities, taking on greater risks while using the mask as a shield against retaliation from both criminals and his own colleagues. Yet his actions also brought him closer to the larger Wakandan mythos, drawing the attention of those who recognized that the mantle of Black Panther was not something that could simply be assumed. The issue showed Kasper wrestling with the consequences of his choices: he wanted to protect his community, but his decision to wear the suit had already tied him to forces and traditions much bigger than himself. By the conclusion, his journey as a man walking between two worlds — the badge and the Panther — was solidified as both a burden and an opportunity. (Black Panther v3 #53)

During a bust gone wrong, Kasper’s actions exposed the violent extortion tactics of dirty cops on his own force. In his apartment, he discovered and donned a spare Black Panther suit originally belonging to T’Challa, which had been left in NYPD evidence. Using it, he conducted an unauthorized nighttime operation to take down a drug house. Kasper infiltrated the building, fought multiple armed dealers in close combat, and disarmed their leader by using the Panther suit’s claws and enhanced armor. Cole realized he could wield the mantle of the Black Panther as a way to protect his neighborhood from both gangs and corrupt officers. (Black Panther v3 #54) Kasper escalated his vigilante activities, patrolling Harlem in the Panther costume. He raided stash houses controlled by rival drug factions, systematically dismantling their operations. In one sequence, he used stealth tactics to disable guards posted on rooftops before storming into the main base, where he fought through waves of gunmen using agility and precision strikes. Meanwhile, he also confronted officers from his own precinct who were protecting dealers for kickbacks. Kasper directly fought and incapacitated several of them in the Panther suit, ensuring their corruption was exposed without revealing his identity. His actions earned him the attention of both T’Challa, monitoring from afar, and the criminal underworld, which began to take him seriously as a disruptive force. (Black Panther v3 #55) Kasper’s activities drew retaliation from both gangs and corrupt officers. Ambushed in the streets, he fought off attackers using the Panther’s enhanced armor to withstand gunfire while disarming enemies with his claws and martial skill. He also turned the ambush against them by luring the attackers into an alley where he systematically disabled their vehicles, leaving them for the authorities to find. Kasper then uncovered that one of the major crime factions, led by the ruthless 66 Bridges gang, had put a bounty on him. In a tense confrontation, he stormed one of their safehouses, using improvised tactics such as knocking out power and fighting in darkness to gain the upper hand. His victory sent a message that the “new Panther” was a serious threat to Harlem’s underworld. (Black Panther v3 #56)

Kasper confronted escalating violence from the 66 Bridges gang. He raided a drug shipment at the docks, ambushing dozens of heavily armed smugglers. Using stealth, he took out sentries silently before initiating a brutal melee on the pier, disabling gunmen with a combination of Panther claws and unarmed combat. He also sabotaged a shipment truck by ripping out its engine block with the suit’s enhanced strength, leaving the contraband exposed to law enforcement. During this, he barely avoided an assassination attempt by rival officers working with the gangs, forcing him to flee across the rooftops while still fighting off pursuers. Kasper’s daring assault crippled a major smuggling operation, but also put a larger target on his back. (Black Panther v3 #57) Kasper’s double life as a cop and masked vigilante collided when he began investigating his own department’s ties to the 66 Bridges. He wore the Panther suit to interrogate informants, dragging them across rooftops until they revealed names of officers who were protecting gang leaders. During a raid on a Harlem nightclub acting as a front, Kasper fought both gang enforcers and off-duty cops in plainclothes. He used his agility to avoid gunfire and incapacitated them with targeted strikes, leaving the bodies bound for Internal Affairs to find. By the end, Kasper’s war on both sides drew attention from Wakanda, who began monitoring him closely to see whether he was a threat or a potential successor to T’Challa. (Black Panther v3 #58)

After giving up being a superhero and returning to the police full time, Kevin found himself in a dead-end desk job working for inconsiderate superiors for lousy pay. His ex-girlfriend Gwen threw him out of his mother's apartment and would not let him see their newborn son without proper child support. Kevin ended up living in a massively downscaled apartment complex that he could barely afford on a desk jockey's salary. While working on an assignment, Kevin was contacted by T'Challa to request his services one last time, he accepted since his assignment correlated to the favor T'Challa was asking him. This task involved him sifting through suspect reports about grizzly killings regarding Elias Wirtham who'd been conducting illicit surgical experiments on the black market. It turned out that the Wirtham's research had been funded with Vibranium smuggled out of Wakanda by the mutant criminal The Vanisher. With the villain's latest drop being centered near his neighborhood, Kevin busted Wirtham in his White Tiger persona and found out that Elias was only dealing with the Vanisher because he needed new Vibranium implants as his powers were on the wane. Cole left Cardiac handcuffed to his unlicensed patient while he headed to the Bar with No Name, the designated meeting place between Wirtham and the Vanisher. Kevin approached the Vanisher, pretending to be Wirtham's go-to-guy. He let down his disguise when tagging the villain with his Vibranium knives. When the Vanisher teleported all the way back to Birnin Zana with the stolen Vibranium, White Tiger hitched a ride and doused him with it in order to trap him in place. Discontented with having ended up where he didn't want to return, Kevin immediately asked for a flight back to New York. T'Challa instead made Kevin an offer to properly train him and school him in the ways of Wakanda for his past and present services, coupled with a Wakandan arsenal of weapons and gadgetry, and an all-new look with augmented body armor. Notes

  • The Kasper Cole Black Panther was created by Christopher Priest and Dan Fraga where he made his first appearance in Black Panther v3 #50 (December, 2002).
  • In an interview, Priest said that the character was pitched by Priest as a 'dark satire of Spider-Man', in line with work he had done on DC Comics' Steel, who functioned similarly as a 'dysfunctional Superman'.
  • Priest commented on the characters motivation, "Tom DeFalco once taught me that Spider-Man's motivation for being Spider-Man was to patrol the city looking for crimes so he could photograph himself in the act of stopping the crimes and sell the photos to Jameson to raise money to pay his rent which was always late. Kasper's motive is to wear the costume so he won't be recognized by the good guys or the bad guys as he goes about cleaning up his precinct so he can get a promotion to Detective so he can make enough money to marry his pregnant girlfriend and move them all out of Harlem."
  • In addition, Priest had noted the character of Kasper Cole and his friends and family therefore take many cues from Peter Parker and his supporting cast, with Kasper's mother Ruth correlating with Aunt May, his father Jack with Uncle Ben and his girlfriend Gwen with Gwen Stacy.
  • Priest had commented that he also drew inspiration from the film Training Day, as well as sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond.
