Biography

The Iron Giant kid in Sentinel v1 #1.

Juston Seyfert

Juston Seyfert lived in Antigo, Wisconsin, with his younger brother and his father, where they spent their time in the family junkyard constructing small battle-bots. His mother left their family when he was still very young because she tired of domestic life and responsibility. The Seyfert family lived in a junkyard Seyfert Salvage. Juston and Chris had a very close relationship, and frequently worked together to build battlebots. Unfortunately, Juston and his friends Matt and Alex, small for their age, were often picked on at school. (Sentinel v1 #1)

A mechanically gifted teenager who often faced harassment from bullies at school, Juston came across a sophisticated micro-processor in the salvage yard and decided to install it into his own custom-built robot. During a test battle with his friends, this robot suddenly vanished into the dense piles of scrap, leading Juston to search the yard until he made a monumental discovery in a deep crater. He found the massive, ravaged remains of a thirty-foot-tall Sentinel that had crashed and begun a slow self-repair process deep within the junk. Initially terrified by the scale and nature of the machine, Juston quickly became fascinated and chose to assist in its reconstruction rather than report it. He spent countless hours scavenging scrap metal to rebuild the giant and began the difficult process of reprogramming its core systems. Over time, he forged a unique bond with the machine as it regained its functionality, and he eventually crafted a primitive harness to ride on its shoulder. Even as he developed an affection for the robot, he remained wary of its original purpose, eventually discovering through online searches that it belonged to a line of machines designed specifically to hunt and exterminate mutants. Despite this dark origin, he resolved to modify its directives to prevent it from harming anyone, hoping to turn the engine of destruction into a tool for good. (Sentinel v1 #1) Juston Seyfert struggled to balance his secret life with the social pressures of high school while he continued to repair the massive robot in the junkyard. He spent a significant amount of time daydreaming about Jessie Ingram, even going so far as to use the Sentinel’s advanced imaging systems to zoom in on her from a distance while she was at school. When he finally found the courage to talk to her in a secluded hallway, he tried to gauge her character by asking if she would keep a lost item or return it, but he felt crushed when he discovered she was already dating a popular athlete. His frustration boiled over at home, leading to a heated argument with his father, who worried that Juston was wasting his life away in the scrap heaps. Seeking solace, Juston retreated to the Sentinel and began showing it digital files of its own history, teaching the machine about the X-Men and the destructive purpose for which it was originally built. He worked late into the night to install a new array of sensors and spark plugs, further integrating his own technology into the Sentinel's ancient frame to ensure it would obey only him. By the end of his efforts, he felt a sense of power that he lacked in his everyday life, growing more detached from his human peers as his bond with the machine deepened. (Sentinel v1 #2)
