Biography

Origin

Jonathan Hart in Incredible Hulk v1 #214.

Jonathan Hart was the son of Phillip Hart and a humanoid alien woman of the Contraxian race. His father had been a brilliant scientist who developed a revolutionary, extremely efficient liquid fuel called Zero Fluid. The alien was one of many scientists dispatched to try to discover an energy source to resuscitate the dwindling nuclear processes of the Contraxian sun. Learning of Hart's experiments, the alien assumed a totally human form to keep Hart under surveillance. Hart and the alien eventually met, married, and produced a son they named Jack. The alien woman went by the name of Marie who later died in a car accident when the boy was a child. Jack grew up without knowing of his mother's origins. (Marvel Team-Up v1 #134)

When Jack was a teenager, Phillip Hart perfected his 'Zero Fluid' and decided to donate the fuel to all the free countries of the world. Hart was then contacted by agents of the criminal Corporation who wanted to market the Zero Fluid. Refusing to deal with them, Phillip Hart was murdered by Corporation agents before the eyes of his son. Hart began investigating the murder of his father, scientist Philip Hart. After learning that his father’s death was connected to industrial espionage and sabotage at the Human Engineering Life Laboratory (H.E.L.L.), Jack confronted members of the Corporation responsible for the crime. The conflict escalated when Jack, exposed to a concentrated dose of Zero Fluid developed by his father, experienced a radical transformation that gave him unstable energy-based powers. Using these newfound abilities, he tracked the perpetrators and engaged them in direct combat, unleashing energy blasts powerful enough to destroy vehicles and disable armed attackers. By the issue’s conclusion, Jack had vowed to seek justice for his father’s murder, fully aware that his altered physiology now made him a target for those who sought to exploit his abilities. (Deadly Hands of Kung Fu v1 #22) Following his transformation, Jack Hart continued his pursuit of the Corporation, targeting their agents and eliminating their operations with precision strikes powered by his new energy manipulation abilities. In this encounter, Jack faced heavy opposition, including advanced weaponry designed to counteract superhuman threats. Demonstrating both ingenuity and adaptability, he used his flight capability to evade coordinated attacks and delivered calculated blasts to disable enemy craft. At one point, he engaged in hand-to-hand combat with an enhanced operative, using his augmented strength in conjunction with energy bursts to subdue the foe. Despite the destructive potential of his powers, Jack made a conscious effort to control his output, focusing on incapacitation rather than killing. His actions forced the Corporation into retreat, but Jack recognized that their influence extended far beyond what he had seen so far. (Deadly Hands of Kung Fu v1 #23)

Jack of Hearts

Jack in Jack of Hearts v1 #1.

When his energy powers began to increase uncontrollably, he placed himself into S.H.I.E.L.D. custody. Chaffing in isolation, Jack eventually broke S.H.I.E.L.D. quarantine to meet a former classmate of his, Marcy Kane, who was also actually a Contraxian. She revealed to him his mother's extraterrestrial origin and convinced him to accompany her back to Contraxia to try to save their sun. (Marvel Team-Up v1 #134)

It took time for Marcy to wrap up her graduate studies and join Project: Heart, though, and Jack’s depression made him actively suicidal. And yet, until the radiation poisoning did its work, he found he could not die. Jack of Hearts expelled massive amounts of energy, destroying a bridge, aggravating a storm, but he still could not exhaust his Zero Power. When Marcy finally arrived, Jack was maudlin and hopeless, trapped in an energy-dampening dome called the Playpen which once contained the radioactive mutant, Nuklo. Jack lashed out at Marcy in order to avoid having hope dangled in front of his eyes. The next morning, Dr. Kane was trying again to reach Jack when Hart Mansion came under attack from alien invaders. Marcy released Jack of Hearts from the Playpen so he could help defend the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Jack held off the flying saucers until S.H.I.E.L.D. reinforcements arrived but, instead of returning to Hart Mansion, he scooped up Marcy and fled into the wilderness. (Jack of Hearts v1 #1) Out in the woods, Jack confronted Marcy about something she had said in passing earlier. Marcy Kane revealed she was actually Kaina, from the planet Contraxia, and Jack’s mother had also been from her world, making Jack half-alien. Using telecrystal projections, Kaina explained to the incredulous Jack how Contraxia’s sun was dying, forcing her people to abandon their outer colonies and leading to overpopulation at the homeworld. The ruling Sun Priestesses convinced the population to reject a plan by Commander Varga to populate other habitable worlds, because it would go against their Code to commit the genocide necessary to make room on worlds already sustaining life. Instead, top Contraxian scientists set forth to find new sources of energy in the universe that might re-energize the sun. Jack’s mother, Marie, was just such a scientist. She met Phillip Hart of Earth and fell in love with him while encouraging his research into Zero Fluid. After she died in a car crash, her promising reports stopped reaching Contraxia, and so Kaina was dispatched to Earth to follow up on Marie’s progress. (Jack of Hearts v1 #2)

Jack’s exposure to Zero Fluid had a unique effect on his half-alien physiology. The blackened light side of his body did not represent dead cells, but was a natural representation of his Contraxian heritage. Furthermore, as the living embodiment of Zero Power, Jack of Hearts potentially contained the force necessary to save all life on his mother’s homeworld. Kaina admitted she had deceived Jack but claimed to truly love him and asked him for his help preserving Contraxia. Meanwhile, Varga and his faction of Contraxian Survivalists had grown impatient and arrived on Earth to seize the Zero Power by force. When the Survivalists captured Kaina, Jack of Hearts followed their ship into space and submitted himself to them, agreeing to travel back to Contraxia and aid their sun, however he could. (Jack of Hearts v1 #2)

At one point, they were approached by Thanos and Terrax, who sought Ganymede for their own agenda. Without further explanation, Terrax attacked Ganymede while Thanos handled Jack. Ganymede successfully overpowered Terrax, but Thanos defeated Jack and then caught Ganymede off guard, knocking her out. They then took her unconscious, while Jack lay powerless on the floor, too weak to do anything about it. (Cosmic Powers v1 #3)

Worried about Ganymede, Jack enlisted the help of Genis-Vell and tracked Ganymede to the Tyrant's base. Jack was ready to fight for the release of Ganymede, but he stopped with the revelation that she had willingly agreed to help Thanos to stop Tyrant. Jack was quite shocked at first, but agreed to join them as well. In the end, however, Thanos betrayed the group to pursue his own goals, leading them to abandon him as he fought Tyrant. (Cosmic Powers v1 #6) Not long after, Ganymede cut ties with Jack to focus solely on Tyrant's demise. (Cosmic Powers Unlimited v1 #3)

Avengers

As an Avenger in Avengers: The Children's Crusade v1 #5.

The neutro-mist's effects did not last, however -- eventually Jack's power levels became so hazardous, he needed to spend an increasing number of hours a day in isolation in the 'Zero Room'. The strain of isolation made Jack increasingly stand-offish and aggressive, causing him to clash with his teammates, particularly Ant-Man. (Avengers v3 #62)

When the Earth's Mightiest Heroes were recognized by the U.N. as a sovereign nation, Jack remained with the team, despite struggling with his motivations for being a hero. (Avengers v3 #61)

With She-Hulk and Jack's ability to safely co-exist in question, the Avengers and Jack agreed that he would leave the team to focus on solving the issues with his powers. While attempting to patch up his relationship with Jack, Ant-Man was called away by a phone call, as his daughter had been kidnapped. Despite barely having 30 minutes left before his powers spun out of control, Jack followed Ant-Man, and stopped him from shooting his daughter's kidnapper in front of her. Finally finding his motivation for being a hero, but with not enough time to make it to the Zero Room, Jack snatched up the kidnapper and flew him into space. As his timer reached zero, Jack exploded, his body crumbling to dust in Earth's orbit. (Avengers v3 #76)

Return

Jack of Hearts in Marvel Zombies Supreme v1 #4.

Jack of Hearts reappeared in a blaze of unstable energy when a team led by Jill Harper and Battlestar entered the besieged Project PEGASUS facility. Amidst the chaos of zombified clones of the Squadron Supreme overrunning the lab, Jack’s energy—generated by a mysterious zero-point projector—reformed into his corporeal body, still clad in his signature suit. He awoke briefly, disoriented and weakened, before immediately assessing the situation. Despite his amnesiac and fragile state, he summoned enough power to repel a wave of zombie attackers, creating a protective energy field that allowed Jill’s team to regroup. (Marvel Zombies: Supreme v1 #2) Once his senses stabilized, Jack of Hearts took a proactive role in defending Project PEGASUS. He unleashed controlled energy bursts to incinerate approaching zombie clones of Squadron Supreme members before they breached key lab areas. Recognizing the growing threat, he coordinated with Harper’s squad, directing them to strategic positions while using his energy projectiles to secure corridors and access points. His efforts bought critical time for the remaining scientists and operatives to organize a defensive stand and strategize evacuation. (Marvel Zombies: Supreme v1 #3)

Hart continued his defense of the besieged facility, battling through swarms of zombie clones to rescue Harper when she was bitten by an infected Squad member. Using an intense power surge, he expelled the zombie within her by enveloping her in a radiant energy field, effectively purging the infection and saving her life. As the energy subsided, Jack paused, momentarily reflecting on his origin and what it now meant to stand for heroism amidst such unprecedented horror. The emotional moment ended with Jack and Harper sharing a human connection—symbolic of his regained humanity. (Marvel Zombies: Supreme v1 #4) With Project PEGASUS’s defenses collapsing, Jack of Hearts became the weapon of last resort. He unleashed a massive burst of zero-energy, incinerating the remaining zombie clones and sealing off the threat zone. His energy wave destroyed the undead Squadron Supreme, preventing further spread of the outbreak. Following the assault, Jack helped the survivors regroup and guided them to safety from the now-crippled facility. His return marked the turning of the tide in the battle against zombified terror. (Marvel Zombies: Supreme v1 #5)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Jack of Hearts was a male human mutate with a strikingly elaborate costume that reflected a playing card motif. His face was partially concealed by a half-mask that covered the left side, stylized with a heart emblem. His costume featured an asymmetrical design, with a red-and-black color scheme on one side and a white-and-black scheme on the other, divided along his vertical midline. This outfit was accented with heart symbols prominently displayed on his chest and other armor plating. His hair was dark, and his skin bore a slightly pale complexion, possibly a side effect of Zero Fluid exposure. The armor incorporated advanced materials that provided limited protection while also serving as a containment system for his unstable energy powers. (Deadly Hands of Kung Fu v1 #22)

Jack Hart demonstrated a determined and justice-driven personality, with his father’s murder serving as a central motivation. He was resourceful, quick to adapt to his abilities, and unwilling to back down from powerful opponents. Despite being new to the superhuman world, Jack showed tactical thinking and an instinctive grasp of his powers’ limitations, favoring precise strikes over reckless destruction. He also exhibited a moral compass, avoiding unnecessary harm even to his enemies, and was shown to be deeply mistrustful of corporate and governmental manipulation. (Deadly Hands of Kung Fu v1 #22)

Jack grew up without knowing the true origins of his mother. (Marvel Team-Up v1 #134)

Powers and abilities

Empowered by Zero Fluid in Marvel Zombies: Supreme v1 #5.

Jack of Hearts was a human mutate whose physiology was radically altered after exposure to his father’s experimental Zero Fluid. This transformation granted him the ability to generate and project vast amounts of energy, which he could release in controlled blasts or use to power his flight. His enhanced cellular structure made him more resistant to injury than a normal human, and the Zero Fluid also augmented his physical strength beyond peak human levels. However, his powers were unstable, requiring containment through his specialized armor to prevent them from overloading his body. The energy reserves within him were self-replenishing, giving him sustained combat capability without external power sources. (Deadly Hands of Kung Fu v1 #22)

Jack of Hearts's brain has incorporated the artificial intelligence of a computerized device called the Scanalyzer, enabling him to think with the speed of a computer and store and retrieve information with a computer-like capacity and efficiency.

Originally, he wore a suit of armor crafted in medieval Europe. (Deadly Hands of Kung Fu v1 #23)
