Biography
Jūshirō Ukitake (Japanese: (浮竹 十四郎, Hepburn: Ukitake Jūshirō) was a male soul born the eldest son from the low-class aristocratic Ukitake family. He had five brothers and two sisters, whom he essentially supports by himself. When he was 3 years old, Ukitake developed a fatal lung disease, which caused his hair to turn white. His parents were very superstitious, and when he was abandoned as a lost cause by the doctors, they took Ukitake to the outskirts of the 78th District of Eastern Rukongai, where they prayed at the shrine of the old fallen god Mimihagi to save their child. It was thanks to Mimihagi that Ukitake survived and eventually became a Shinigami. While being trained at Shin'ō Academy, Ukitake revealed to Shunsui that his sister-in-law had been executed after losing the sacred treasure Shinken Hakkyōken. He, along with Shunsui Kyōraku, were one of the first graduates of Captain Yamamoto's Shin'ō Academy and they were the first graduates to become captains. Furthermore, he was personally trained by Yamamoto himself. He and Kyōraku are the oldest captains among the Gotei 13, with the exception of Retsu Unohana and Yamamoto himself. It is stated that the four of them have been captains of the Gotei 13 for at least 100 years as of 110 years ago before the current time. Approximately 110 years ago, Ukitake arrived at the 1st Division Headquarters with Captain Shunsui Kyōraku and Lieutenant Lisa Yadōmaru of the 8th Division. He first asked about the whereabouts of the 12th Division captain. As Shunsui and Captains Love Aikawa and Shinji Hirako started a conversation about the status of the Gotei 13, he reminded Shunsui not to forget Captain Unohana as one of the captains from 100 years ago. He then went inside with the rest of the captains to await the arrival of the newly-appointed captain of the 12th Division, Kisuke Urahara.
When Rukia Kuchiki was imprisoned in the Repentance Cell, Ukitake was depicted standing outside her prison, silently watching over her situation with a stern but conflicted expression. Though he did not directly intervene at this moment, his presence established his position as one of the high-ranking captains who would be directly tied to her fate. His attention to her imprisonment revealed his awareness of the situation and foreshadowed his concern over the judgment placed on her. Ukitake’s actions became more defined as he stepped forward against the unfolding events surrounding Rukia’s scheduled execution. When Byakuya Kuchiki and other forces of Soul Society upheld the decree, Ukitake made clear his opposition. Alongside Captain Shunsui Kyōraku, he attempted to halt the execution by directly confronting the Central 46’s enforcement of the law. Ukitake, bound by his sense of justice and moral duty, went so far as to draw his zanpakutō, Sōgyo no Kotowari, against his fellow Shinigami captains, making a rare move that underscored both his determination and his willingness to put himself at risk to protect Rukia. In Bleach Chapter 152, Ukitake took direct action alongside Kyōraku to intervene in the execution. He coordinated with Kyōraku to disable the massive execution weapon, Sōkyoku, showing his power and decisiveness in battle. Despite his long-term illness, Ukitake did not hesitate to use his strength when he believed an injustice was being committed. His choice to resist the law and stand against the collective judgment of the Soul Society leadership highlighted his readiness to break ranks for the sake of his own convictions.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Jūshirō Ukitake was a tall and lean man with very long white hair, which he typically tied loosely at the back. His most distinctive feature was his pale complexion, a result of his chronic illness, which often left him visibly weak. His emaciated appearance caused by an illness occasionally resulted in him him coughing up blood. Because of his illness, he often spends his time recuperating at Ugendō, his family's estate. During one of his attacks when he was much younger, his hair turned white over a three-day period. He wore the standard Shinigami uniform with his captain’s haori draped over it, but his frail demeanor stood in contrast to the commanding presence he exuded. His face often carried a calm, contemplative expression, even in moments of conflict.
Ukitake’s personality was revealed early as deeply compassionate, moral, and just. He displayed a profound concern for those under his command, particularly Rukia, whom he treated with great care and respect. Despite his frailty and reserved nature, he showed a firm backbone, as he was willing to defy Soul Society’s laws when he deemed them unjust. Ukitake valued fairness and integrity, and this often placed him in conflict with more rigid or authoritarian figures among the captains.
Ukitake was well-respected and highly honorable figure who always treated those around him with respect. This was the case even to those who were weaker or not as highly ranked as he is. As a result, he can be easily approached by other members of Soul Society who seek favors or advice from the captain. Due to his high moral code, Ukitake will never let any harm come to either his underlings or those who attempt to protect them. He refuses to give up when he believes something is wrong and will break a rule to do what is right. He is also quite perceptive, as seen when he analyzes the various disturbances caused in Soul Society, and has the ability to correctly judge people's character, as noted by Yamamoto, and knows when they are lonely.
Due to his long-standing position with the Gotei 13, Ukitake is one of the most proficient combatants in Soul Society and always maintains a level of honor and integrity when engaging in battle, much like his best friend Shunsui. He refuses to fight with a child or even in the presence of a child, even if that child is an Arrancar. He always maintains a semblance of respect for his opponent and was polite in combat situations. He also has a high measure of mercy, never taking the chance to kill Lilynette, but rather actually try to teach her how to be a better fighter, even though she was an enemy.
Powers and abilities
Jūshirō Ukitake was a Soul (魂魄, Konpaku; Hun and Po; Viz "Konpaku") that resided in the other realm of the Soul Society. Due to his nature, he was able to manipulate spiritual energy. Thus, he could manipulate his Reiryoku (霊力, Spiritual Power) that was a power aligned with the spiritual sensitivity and willpower of the user. Through its usage, he could release it as a physical force onto the world that was known as Reiatsu (霊圧, Spiritual Pressure).
He came to be a Shinigami (死神, death god(s); Viz "Soul Reaper(s)") thus making him a guardian of the souls who are going through the circle of transmigration between the World of the Living and Soul Society. Thus, Ukitake was a human soul functioning as a Shinigami. Though chronically ill with a debilitating lung disease that frequently weakened him, he still possessed immense spiritual pressure and combat ability befitting a captain.
Ukitake was incredibly durable, even by Shinigami standards. He was able to withstand the devastating attacks of Captain-Commander Yamamoto, whose Zanpakutō is the most devastating in all of Soul Society in terms of destructive power. He was also able to effortlessly block Lilynette's Cero with his bare hand, though he himself admitted it was not even of Gillian-level power.
As one of the oldest and strongest captains in the Gotei 13, Ukitake possesses immense spiritual power. He, alongside his best friend Shunsui Kyōraku, are said to possess Reiatsu unmatched by their peers or predecessors. During his fight against the Captain-Commander, he is not overwhelmed by the spiritual pressure of Yamamoto, though most people would be in such a situation. Captain Ukitake has spent his whole life supporting his ailing body through the strength of his Reiatsu alone. His sheer volume of Reiatsu was tremendous, even for a Captain. When the remnants of the high ranked members of the Gotei 13 pooled their Reiatsu together to open a gateway to the Soul King Palace, the loss of his Reiatsu could not be compensated for by the Visored or Shinigami present.
Due to years of undergoing many different medical treatments because of his health issues, Ukitake had accumulated much knowledge of medicines and healing techniques. Using this knowledge, he has directed the treatment of many important members of the Gotei 13 during the devastating war against the invading armies of the Wandenreich.
As a shinigami, he came to gain a special sword known as a Zanpakutō (斬魄刀, Soul-Cutter Sword; Viz "Soul Slayer"). In his case, he wielded a katana known as Sōgyo no Kotowari (双魚理, Truth of Pisces; Viz "Law of the Twin Fish") where the blade had a rectangular bronze cross guard and dark red handle. He could release its first stage through a Shikai (始解, Initial Release) with the command phrase being "All Ye Waves, Become My Shield. All Ye Thunder, Become My Blade" (波悉く我が盾となれ 雷悉く我が刃となれ, nami kotogotoku waga tate to nare, ikazuchi kotogotoku waga yaiba to nare; Viz "All Waves Rise, and Become my Shield, Lightning, Strike now, and Become my Blade").
While hating the concept of having to engage in a fight and suffering from a reduced physical capacity due to recurrent illness, Ukitake was still able to hold his own against Yamamoto alongside Shunsui. The unique shape of his sword's Shikai and its corresponding abilities make his form of fighting unconventional among Shinigami, but show his skill in this art. When in better health he was capable of inflicting swift slashes against vital areas.
Ukitake had been stricken with a fatal illness since three years old. His life came to be saved by his family's prayer to a local god called Mimihagi (ミミハギ, Mimihagi). Unknown to them at the time, the hand shaped Mimihagi entity was actually the Right Arm of the Soul King (霊王の右腕, Reiō no Migiude) which governed the aspect of "Stillness" (静止, Seishi) allowing control over stagnation and the stopping of development, growth, and progress. Therefore, Mimihagi can use its power to inhibit change such as the progression of an illness, which Mimihagi chiefly accomplished via symbiosis with whatever being it is attached to at the time. As the Soul King's Right Arm, Mimihagi fittingly possessed great amounts of Reiryoku. Being a living shadow, Mimihagi seemingly has some control over darkness itself. Mimihagi bestows blessings upon those who offer it anything aside from an eye, since it already possesses its own. In turn, its power stops the progression of whatever is afflicting a body part or organ of those it blesses; this grants a reprieve from the inevitable for a time, extending their life and making them capable of what they otherwise would not be capable of doing. With his diseased lungs taken from him, Ukitake survived his illness and became a captain of the Gotei 13, but he frequently coughs up blood and becomes too sick to fulfill his duties as a captain at times. Despite clinging to his life due to Mimihagi, his body remains ailing perpetually, suffering from time to time. This serves as an unexpected hindrance during battle.
His frailty did not diminish his power but forced him to rely more on precision, skill, and intelligence in battle rather than raw endurance.
