History
Pre-Crisis
Inertron was an element known in the 30th century.
A unique chemical substance classified as Inertron was identified by Brainiac 5 as the hardest, densest, and most indestructible element in existence, recognized for its absolute capability to withstand any physical force. Following a series of devastating attacks by the super-villain Starfinger against the seven wonders of the world, Brainiac 5 tracked the criminal's flight path back to Metropolis near the Fusion Power Sphere. This location inspired Brainiac 5 to utilize the unique properties of the material asset. Working in conjunction with Saturn Girl, Brainiac 5 manufactured portable, dense tactical shields from the alloy to protect each individual member of the Legion of Super-Heroes. The newly developed Inertron shields successfully resisted and deflected Starfinger's high-impact energy ray blasts during the team's final confrontation, preventing trauma to the heroes and allowing the tactical squad to safely neutralize and capture the adversary. A dense, specialized alloy block classified as an Inertron Cube was utilized by the Legion of Super-Heroes to securely house a reality-warping device known as the Miracle Machine. Following a hostile invasion of Earth by an alien organization called the Dark Circle, Brainiac 5 activated the powerful artifact to completely repel the enemy fleets and instantly construct a new Legion Headquarters complex. A cosmic entity known as a Controller subsequently materialized before the team to issue an explicit warning regarding the machine's immense potential for catastrophic galactic disaster. Recognizing this severe threat, the Legionnaires immediately manufactured a solid containment unit out of Inertron—the most indestructible substance in the galaxy—to completely isolate the weapon. The tactical squad successfully sealed the device inside the reinforced vault, vowing to leave it hidden away until mankind evolved enough to safely handle its power. (Adventure Comics v1 #367)
