History
International Genetic Technologies, Inc. (InGen) was established in the mid-1970s by John Hammond and his financial partner Benjamin Lockwood, initially operating with a secretive mandate for groundbreaking bioengineering research. The company's true objective, the de-extinction of dinosaurs using DNA retrieved from mosquitoes preserved in fossilized amber, was kept a closely guarded secret from the public and most investors, who were instead led to believe InGen was developing less dramatic applications like a miniature elephant. Official records indicated InGen was just one of any number of small 1980s genetic engineering start-ups. InGen had discovered a method of cloning dinosaurs and other animals using blood extracted from mosquitoes trapped in amber during various periods in time, ranging from the Mesozoic era to the 1800s. In the early 1980s, after securing a 99-year lease from the Costa Rican government for the remote Muertes Archipelago, including Isla Sorna and Isla Nublar, InGen began the primary phase of its ambitious plan. The corporation built extensive, covert research facilities on Isla Sorna (dubbed "Site B"), which functioned as the 'factory floor' where the cloning, growing, and nurturing of the dinosaurs occurred. By 1986, InGen scientists had successfully cloned their first dinosaur, a monumental achievement that secured further clandestine investment. As more species were successfully engineered, InGen transitioned its focus to the creation of a massive, state-of-the-art biological preserve and theme park on the neighboring Isla Nublar. This project named Jurassic Park was designed with sophisticated security systems and elaborate exhibits, intended to be a global sensation that would redefine entertainment and science simultaneously. InGen operated without regulatory oversight, driven by the belief that their revolutionary technology was entirely controllable and that the immense profits would justify the secrecy and ethical shortcuts they had taken up to that point. By 1993, the park was nearing completion, poised for its grand opening, a testament to InGen's scientific prowess and its unchecked corporate hubris.
Following sabotage during an inspection visit (Last week of August 1989 in the novel, unknown date in 1993 for the film) several people were killed by escaping dinosaurs.
The company had been on the verge of Chapter 11 bankruptcy since the incident. Hammond was forced out by the board of directors who plan to exploit the surviving animals from Isla Sorna and place them into a developing exhibit in San Diego, in order to restore the company's lost fortunes. Hammond organized and sends a team of experts led by Ian Malcolm to Isla Sorna to document the animals before the InGen assault which goes horribly wrong, both due to sabotage (by Malcolm's team) and underestimation of the animals' abilities. A pair of T-Rex specimens were captured (one adult, one juvenile) and taken to San Diego where they were to be exhibited, however the adult T-Rex escapes and goes on a rampage before finally being subdued and returned to the island.
Overview
In appearance, International Genetic Technologies, Inc. was a pioneering, highly secretive bioengineering corporation operating in the late 20th century, primarily established for the purpose of cloning extinct species.
The organization maintained a vast scope of operations, encompassing both intensive genetic research facilities on Isla Sorna and a massive, ambitious entertainment park infrastructure on the nearby Isla Nublar. Utilizing sophisticated proprietary technology, InGen successfully recreated numerous species of dinosaurs by extracting and reconstructing ancient DNA, an unprecedented scientific achievement. The corporation functioned with immense autonomy and minimal regulatory oversight, driven by the commercial goal of generating enormous profits through unique, live-animal exhibits. The operational model involved rearing these cloned animals in highly contained environments designed with elaborate security systems. While technologically advanced, InGen was fundamentally defined by its profound organizational hubris; it was a powerful entity that underestimated the complexity and danger inherent in managing its own creations, focusing almost exclusively on the scope of its ambition rather than the sustainability or safety of its remarkable, isolated enterprises.
The company had numerous divisions included:
- InGen Construction :
- InGen Security Division : One branch of its security division was the Asset Containment Unit (ACU) whose role was to ensure the cloned dinosaurs (referred to as 'assets').
- InGen Operations :
- InGen Biogenetics :
- Jurassic World Park Rangers :
Among InGen's creations included:
- Distortus rex :
Known facilities operated by the company included:
- InGen Headquarters :
- Site A :
- Site B :
- Site C : the island of Ile Saint-Hubert was located in the Atlantic Ocean 226 miles east of French Guiana that was to be used as the site for InGen Research & Development.
The company was based in Palo Alto, California, and had one location in Europe though most of InGen's research took place on both the islands of Isla Sorna and Isla Nublar.
