Biography

Hyakkimaru (Japanese: 百鬼丸, Hepburn: Hyakkimaru) was the male offspring of Kagemitsu Daigo (醍醐 景光, Daigo Kagemitsu) and his wife Nui No Kata (縫の方, Nui no kata) during a time when his father was Lord of Ishikawa and vassal to the governor of Kaga Province in Japan. At the time, his domain was suffering from a variety of problems including drought and conflict leading to his position being weakened along with his people suffering. To rectify this, Daigo decided to forge a pact with a number of demons that had been sealed in a temple in his territory. He offered them his new born son in exchange for prosperity for his kingdom and a return to power. The demons accepted these terms and each of the 48 beings took a single body part from the new born leaving the child blind, deaf, mute and devoid of skin or features. Unknown to anyone though, the child gained demonic powers as a side effect of the claiming of body parts. Kagemitsu was marked by the demons to indicate the pact was claimed and the Lord of Ishikama decided to have his child killed. Whilst taken to the river, the midwife took pity on the child and instead decided to put the boy in a boat and set adrift as she let the fates decide whether the new born would live or not. The boat drifted down the river where it was discovered by the travelling doctor Jukai (寿海, Jukai) who found the child within and was shocked at the boy's appearance though determined the new born was alive. Jukai then decided to care for the child as if he was his own and decided to name him Hyakkimaru.

He was then introduced as a wandering swordsman born without many of his body parts, sacrificed by his father, Lord Daigo Kagemitsu, to demons in exchange for power. Despite his missing features, Hyakkimaru survived thanks to the care of a doctor, Jukai, who outfitted him with prosthetic limbs and weapons, including sword blades hidden in his arms. Hyakkimaru engaged in his first battles with demons, fighting them with his prosthetic sword arms while protecting the orphan boy Dororo. His decisive strikes and fluid swordsmanship allowed him to slay these supernatural creatures, and with each kill, he began to reclaim a part of his stolen body.

Afterwards, he confronted a monstrous demon serpent terrorizing a village. Using his heightened senses, which compensated for his missing natural body parts, he tracked the creature and engaged it directly. He fought with relentless precision, cutting into its armored hide with his concealed sword arms. During the battle, Dororo provided distractions that gave Hyakkimaru openings, allowing him to exploit the beast’s weaknesses. With a final strike, he severed its head, reclaiming his ears in the process, a milestone that restored his ability to hear and deepened his bond with Dororo as his trusted companion.

Hyakkimaru then confronted one of the most formidable demons he had yet faced, a massive, flame-breathing creature guarding a ruined temple. The fight tested his stamina and his adaptive combat style, forcing him to use both his prosthetic swords and the environment to his advantage. He maneuvered with speed to dodge blasts of fire and timed his attacks to exploit the demon’s recovery between attacks. After a prolonged struggle, he successfully drove his blades into the creature’s vulnerable underbelly, killing it. The victory restored another part of his stolen body, pushing him further on his journey of reclaiming his humanity.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Hyakkimaru was a tall, lean young Japanese man with an androgynous beauty once his features were restored, though his earliest appearances showed him with a patchwork, artificial body made of prosthetics. His black hair was long and unruly, often tied back when he traveled. He wore a simple, dark kimono or traveling garments suited to a ronin’s life, often concealing the mechanical weapons hidden in his arms. His most iconic feature was his prosthetic limbs, with concealed blades that he drew in battle. He was named Hyakkimaru by his adoptive father Jukai after the man found the new born child adrift.

Hyakkimaru was defined by a quiet intensity and resilience born from suffering. He rarely spoke at length but showed a strong moral center, refusing to abandon those in need despite his own quest for wholeness. His bond with Dororo revealed a gentler, protective side, and through their travels, he displayed humor and compassion that contrasted with his violent encounters against demons. Hyakkimaru’s determination to reclaim his stolen body never overrode his sense of humanity, and he consistently risked his life to protect innocent villagers from supernatural threats.

Powers and abilities

Originally, Hyakkimaru was a ordinary healthy human child until his father made a pact with the 48 demons. This saw them each claim one part from the boy leaving him barely alive as they took his eyes, nose, ears, throat, skin, arms, legs, spines and other parts of his body. A side effect though of this theft of his body was that Hyakkimaru gained some element of demonic powers such as the ability to see into the soul of others which served as a form of vision for him. This allowed him to be able to see demons and people by the aura of their souls though he lacked true sight. By the time he was a teenager, he came to learn that if he slayed one of the demons that took his body then he gained back the stolen body part. These magically returned to him in a painful moment as they mystically reformed in his body. However, initially, he lacked most of these parts and instead made do with the artificial limbs and parts made by his adoptive father Jukai.

Hyakkimaru’s abilities stemmed from his unique prosthetics and honed combat skills. His prosthetic arms contained retractable blades, which he wielded with expert swordsmanship, allowing him to fight multiple demons and human foes alike. Over time, as he reclaimed his stolen senses and body parts, his physical capabilities and perception expanded, granting him superhuman agility, heightened reflexes, and improved awareness. His heightened extrasensory perception allowed him to sense the presence of demons and navigate the world even before he regained his natural senses. His combat style combined relentless offense with improvisation, making him one of the most effective demon slayers of his era.
