Biography
Origin
Paige Guthrie was a female human Mutant born on Earth in the modern age. She was the second of ten children born to Thomas Zebulon' and Lucinda Guthrie in Cumberland, Kentucky. On her 13th birthday, she decided to sneak into the place where her mother kept Sam's letters hidden when he was away from home. From them, she came to learn that her brother had powers as a result of being a Mutant and Paige came to believe that she herself would gain such abilities. She decided to test this by jumping out of the barn window only her to fall on some hay in the process. Paige continued trying to uncover her abilities but with no success and in frustration she claimed that she would tear off her own skin if she did not gain her powers soon. It was the that she learnt that her ability to tear off her skin and reveal a new form beneath it. (Generation X v1 #24)
Following the battle, Paige briefly stayed with X-Force in Shinobi Shaw’s Swiss Chalet before they returned her to Kentucky. Despite being exposed to the realities and dangers of the super hero lifestyle, Paige made it clear that she wanted to be trained in the use of her powers. When Cable began to explain that he did not have the resources to train her, Paige told Cable that she was not interested in his teachings, but that she wanted to be trained by Charles Xavier. Sam and Tabitha brought Paige back home, where she got to learn more about Sam’s life, including the fact that he was, or at least it was believed at that time, an immortal. Sam had hoped to dissuade his sister from following in his footsteps, but Paige explained to him that she thought leaving Xavier’s was the dumbest thing he ever did and that she was going to become the X-Man Sam could have been, even though Xavier was not exactly training new mutants anymore. (X-Force v1 #35)
Generation X
She came to be one of a number of Mutants that had been captured by the techno-organic alien Phalanx. (X-Men v2 #36)
Paige came to be recruited into the newly formed Generation X team. In this time, she manifested her ability to shed her skin, peeling away her outer layer to reveal a hardened, metallic form underneath. She used this transformation to defend herself when attacked, demonstrating her mutation in a combat context for the first time. Husk joined Generation X under Banshee and Emma Frost’s leadership, showcasing both raw potential and a deep eagerness to prove herself as more than just being Sam Guthrie’s little sister. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #318)
As Husk, she began training alongside her new teammates. She participated in coordinated battle exercises, shedding her skin to shift into stone-like and razor-sharp forms during sparring. When the team encountered the villain Emplate, Husk fought with determination, hurling herself into combat by peeling into a diamond-hard form that could resist his draining touch. Despite sustaining injuries, she continued to fight, showing her resilience and commitment to her team. Her powers’ versatility was highlighted, as she experimented with different transformations under pressure. (Generation v1 X #1)
Paige did not get a chance to act on his advice because, before the conversation was even over, Generation X were kidnapped by minions of Emplate, Generation X’s personal arch villain. While the team eventually broke free, Emplate was able to brainwash Paige’s teammate, Synch, and set him after his family in St. Louis. In an effort to save their friend, Husk accompanied some of her teammates. Although Paige had been preparing herself in every way to become team leader, in the heat of the battle it was Jubilee and not her who came up with the perfect strategy to take Synch down. As he had troubles duplicating Paige’s powers, the plan involved her fighting Synch one-on-one to wear him down. However, when Synch interrupted one of her transformations before she was ready, Husk was caught in a rather painful form. Still, Paige fought on through the pain and was winning until she collapsed from the strain. The timely arrival of Monet ended the confrontation. (Generation X v1 #16)
X-Men
Following the disbanding of the X-Corps, Paige returned to Xavier‘s mansion with the X-Men. During that time she developed romantic feelings for Archangel Warren Worthington III and as a result had earned herself the scorn of Stacy X, a recent addition to the X-Men who too had a crush on the winged mutant. Able to 'read' the pheromones that Paige was emitting, Stacy embarrassed Paige in front of the X-Men by revealing her feelings to everyone else. Husk ran away and found a shoulder to cry on in school nurse Annie Ghazikhanian, who she confided in. If Paige’s dream of becoming an X-Man had ever really ended in the first place, it now returned. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #413)
Things looked promising for Paige – she had officially achieved her dream of becoming an X-Man and, with Stacy X quitting and leaving the mansion, there seemed to be no more interference in her and Warren’s growing relationship. However, Jono returning to the mansion from a week-long undercover mission changed that. Paige barely got the chance to deal with the new love triangle she found herself caught in, as, a few days later, operatives of the Church of Humanity crucified several mutants on the front lawn of the mansion. To her and Jono’s horror, two of these mutants happened to be their old teammates, Jubilee and Skin. Taxing Archangel’s healing capabilities to the limit, the X-Men were able to resurrect some of the victims, Jubilee being among them. Chamber and Husk were both thrilled but it was bittersweet when they realized that Skin was not coming back. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #423)
Shortly after Xavier’s departure to Genosha, Cyclops took over as headmaster of the school he decided to reorganize the X-Men. He took both Husk and Archangel off the active rosters, as he wanted Warren to go to Genosha and keep a watchful eye over Professor Xavier’s activities there. (X-Men v2 #157)
Apparently, Paige and Archangel separated before Paige returned to the Xavier Institute. This may have added to her extreme emotions when she picked a fight with the soldiers of the Office of National Emergency, who were positioned at the Xavier Institute, ostensibly for the protection of the various mutants that had arrived seeking sanctuary. Paige’s personal belongings were confiscated and she sought comfort with her brother, Cannonball, as they assisted the mutant refugees with supplies. However, Paige got her own back when she and Cannonball hacked into the personal files of Colonel Reyes. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #469)
Back to School
When the X-Men, and majority of the world’s remaining mutant population, relocated to San Francisco, Paige soon joined them, arriving in time to assist the X-Men during the Skrull Invasion. She was reunited with Archangel and, despite their separation, made it clear that she was still interested in him. (Secret Invasion: X-Men v1 #3)
When the Avengers declared war on the X-Men, the Westchester based team was given the option of siding with Wolverine and the Avengers, or joining Cyclops’ team at war. The third option was remaining at the Jean Grey School to look after the students. Husk’s personal problems seemed to be weighing heavily on her and she could not make a decision, deferring to Cannonball for his opinion. They both remained at the Jean Grey School, although Cannonball later joined the war at Utopia. (X-Men Legacy v1 #266)
Husk became one of the few faculty members to remain at the Jean Grey School, although she found herself unqualified to teach the many subjects lumbered on her. Additionally, her molting skin seemed to increase so much that she was leaving entire husks of herself sitting around. Paige’s mental state could be called into question further by her newfound friendship with Toad, the janitor at the Jean Grey School. They would spend time exploring the caves beneath the school and Paige even started turning her body a similar form as Toad’s so that she could run along the ceiling of the cave with him. She also referred to Toad by his real name, Mortimer, something almost no one else at the Jean Grey School did. (Wolverine and the X-Men v1 #15)
House of X
After the establishment of the nation of Krakoa, she was one of many Mutants that came to reside on the living island that was the home of their people. (House of X v1 #3)
On Jubilee's birthday, Husk finally reunited with her Gen X teammates Everett and Angelo, as they went on a LARP escape room with Jubilee. Jono had also been invited but could not make it that day, and Monet said she had joined them afterwards for drinks. When Skin used his powers to overcome one of the puzzles, the staff of the escape room realized they were mutants and released a Sentinel against them, while sending personnel to attack them. After Angelo was injured, the odds were not looking good for their side, but Monet burst through the roof and destroyed the sentinel, saving everyone's lives. The five friends then went to a bar to reminisce about old times. (X-Men Unlimited Infinity Comic v1 #41)
While on the case, Jono shared with Paige his feelings about wanting to rely less on 'psychic fireballs'. In that moment, they discovered Nightcrawler, Pixie, Doctor Nemesis, and Black Knight fighting a mutated Angel. When Warren escaped, the two were sent to track him. (Legion of X v1 #8)
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Paige Guthrie was a slender teenage girl with long blonde hair, simple farm clothes, and a youthful demeanor reflective of her Kentucky upbringing. (Uncanny X-Men #318) Upon adopting the Husk identity, her costumes often reflected the Generation X team design: a black and yellow bodysuit with red highlights. Her most unique visual trait was her power itself—whenever she shed her skin, it peeled away in ragged strips to reveal a new form beneath, ranging from metallic to stone-like to other textures. This shedding process was often depicted as both grotesque and striking, making her one of the more visually distinctive mutants of Generation X. (Generation X v1 #1)
Paige was as an intelligent, ambitious, and determined, often pushing herself harder than her peers to prove her worth. She exhibited strong academic abilities and a keen analytical mind, making her one of the more studious members of Generation X. At times, her ambition could make her stubborn, and she occasionally showed insecurity over being overshadowed by her older brother Sam. However, she also displayed loyalty, courage, and a strong moral compass, balancing her insecurities with genuine compassion and dedication to her teammates. (Generation X v1 #1)
She had wide-rim glasses that she wore when she was reading. (Generation X v1 #2)
She was said to be passionate and intense where it was said that she ate life with a shovel. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #440)
Upon learning her brother was a Mutant, Paige yearned to have powers of her own with it being the one thing she wanted the most in the world. The day these manifested was said to had been the happiest moment of her life. (Generation X v1 #24)
She was determined to be the best the next generation of X-Men could offer to the world. (Generation X v1 #1) Emma Frost came to remark that Paige was young, beautiful, and intelligent where she knew exactly what she wanted and not being afraid to ruffle a few feathers to get it. In fact, Frost came to comment that Husk reminded her of Emma in her youth. (Generation X v1 #4)
Warren Worthington III came to admit that he was attracted to the younger Paige Guthrie and that this developed into a romantic relationship as he fell in love with her. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #440)
Powers and abilities
As a Mutant, she had a special ability that allowed her to shed her outer skin for a new form underneath it. As Husk, Paige possessed the mutant ability to shed her skin, revealing a new layer composed of different materials beneath. These transformations allowed her to assume metallic, stone, or razor-sharp bodies, each granting her enhanced durability, offensive capabilities, or defensive resilience. She could reform her body multiple times, though frequent transformations were physically painful and left behind layers of shredded skin. Unlike shape-shifters, her transformations were limited to altering her body composition, not her overall form. Her powers gave her versatility in combat, as she could adapt to circumstances by changing her skin to suit the threat. (Generation X v1 #1) Her metamorphic transmutations allowed her to adopt the form of a new element whilst husking where it made a noticeable sound. (Generation X v1 #3)
