The Human Hive
The Human Hive was originally formed from a Chinese-led security delegation aboard the U.N. starship Unity, commanded by the stern and enigmatic Chairman Sheng-Ji Yang. When the Unity was crippled during its descent toward Planet (Alpha Centauri), the crew splintered into ideological factions, and Yang took with him those who valued centralized control, communal unity, and social stability above all else. Rooted in a fusion of Eastern collectivist philosophy and authoritarian psychological doctrine, the Human Hive was born not as a nation, but as an experiment in societal engineering—designed to suppress individuality in favor of the whole. In the early years on Planet, Yang’s Hive rejected materialism, capitalism, and democratic freedoms in favor of self-sufficiency, surveillance, and social conditioning. Every citizen was considered a cog in the machine of state survival, monitored and disciplined through a mix of philosophical indoctrination and biometric tracking. While reviled by many rival factions for its oppressive regime, the Hive endured through brutal efficiency, unmatched internal cohesion, and its resilience in the face of Planet’s evolving alien threats.
It originated during the transit of the United Nations Starship Unity to the Alpha Centauri system, forming when Chairman Sheng-ji Yang led a secessionist movement based on his own philosophical and social principles. Following the catastrophic reactor malfunction and the subsequent assassination of Captain Garland, Yang and his loyalists seized a colony pod and descended to the surface of Planet to establish a society independent of the other splintering factions. Their earliest actions involved the founding of their first base, "The Hive," where they immediately implemented a social structure rooted in legalism and extreme collectivism. The faction focused on the rapid expansion of a subterranean industrial infrastructure, prioritizing the survival of the group over individual liberties or comforts. They utilized a command economy and intensive labor practices to ensure quick growth, often disregarding the environmental impact on the local ecosystem. The military and civilian sectors were integrated into a singular, cohesive hierarchy designed to withstand both external threats and internal dissent through strict discipline and the construction of defensive fortifications. This period was marked by the establishment of a rigorous social order that rejected democratic ideals in favor of a total state where every citizen functioned as a component of a larger social machine.
Overview
In appearance, the Human Hive were a totalist, collectivist society that functioned as a highly disciplined and strictly hierarchical police state. The government was organized as a secular, autocratic meritocracy under the absolute authority of a single Chairman, where formal protocols were rooted in the principles of Legalism and social stability. This administrative structure operated with extreme formality, demanding absolute obedience and the complete subordination of the individual to the state's needs. The faction’s goals and objectives focused on the long-term survival of the human species through the total mobilization of its workforce and the elimination of internal friction. They sought to achieve rapid industrialization and territorial expansion by utilizing a command economy and intensive subterranean construction, aiming to create a society immune to the perceived weaknesses of democratic or capitalistic models. Their primary objective was the perfection of the social machine, where every citizen served as a specialized component in a grander design to dominate the planet's resources. Success was measured by collective output and the resilience of their fortified infrastructure, with the ultimate aim of establishing an impregnable, self-sufficient civilization that could withstand the harsh environment of Alpha Centauri and the hostility of rival factions.
It became a sprawling subterranean faction-state, characterized by stark utilitarian architecture and vast underground habitats built to withstand the hostile surface conditions of Planet. The faction’s bases were dominated by low-ceilinged tunnels, metallic bulkheads, and efficient but austere industrial layouts, giving the impression of a society more akin to an automated machine than a traditional settlement. Massive ventilation ducts, reinforced bunkers, and echoing chambers of synchronized human activity defined its visual identity, with minimal attention given to aesthetic beauty or personal space. Order, uniformity, and containment were visible in every aspect of Hive construction. Above ground, the faction's surface structures were low-profile and reinforced, often indistinguishable from the rocky terrain or camouflaged beneath growths of alien fungus, giving the Hive an air of total isolation from the world around it.
The Human Hive demonstrated a specialized suite of basic skills and abilities centered on high-volume industrial production and extreme defensive resilience. They possessed the unique capacity to construct city improvements and military units at a significantly reduced cost compared to other factions, owing to their mastery of social engineering and the use of a brutal command economy. This ability was rooted in their skill for rapid growth and population expansion, allowing them to outpace rivals in sheer numbers and territorial density. Their technical skills were specifically geared toward subterranean engineering and the rapid deployment of perimeter defenses, which granted their bases an inherent bonus to defensive strength against external attacks. Additionally, the faction exhibited a complete immunity to the negative effects of social models that typically caused internal inefficiency, such as police state drawbacks, because their citizens were conditioned to accept total surveillance and restricted freedoms without civil unrest. Their military doctrine utilized the ability to deploy large quantities of units quickly, relying on overwhelming force and the strategic placement of fortifications to maintain control over their borders. This collective proficiency in resource management and structural fortification allowed them to maintain a stable, productive society even under the most austere conditions on Planet.
