Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, the Human Flame was originally a stocky human man with brown hair and a round face. His first costume was brightly colored, consisting of green pants, red boots, and a chest plate with multiple flame nozzles protruding from it. The outfit was bulky and crude but gave him a distinct fire-themed motif. (Detective Comics v1 #274) Miller wore a more armored red and black suit with Apokoliptian tech integrated into its design, still retaining prominent flame-projecting outlets across the chest and shoulders. (Final Crisis v1 #1)
In personality, Michael Miller was shown as ambitious yet deeply insecure. Initially, he was shown as being overconfident, loudly boasting about his power while committing robberies. (Detective Comics v1 #274) Later on, he was portrayed as desperate for recognition where he was willing to follow Libra purely because he wanted respect from other villains. His constant craving for acknowledgment often made him reckless, and his inferiority complex fueled his violent outbursts. (Final Crisis v1 #1)
Powers and abilities
In powers, Miller initially had no metahuman abilities and relied entirely on his flame-projecting costume. His suit allowed him to spray streams of fire from his chest, engulfing targets or creating barriers of flame. These jets were fueled by an internal system but were limited in range and duration, making him vulnerable when depleted. (Detective Comics v1 #274)
After Libra’s upgrade, the Apokoliptian-enhanced suit greatly amplified his destructive capabilities, giving him greater control, range, and sustained firepower, turning him from a minor nuisance into a serious combat threat. (Final Crisis v1 #1)
Notes
- The Human Flame was created by Jack Miller and Joe Certa where he made his first appearance in Detective Comics v1 #274 (December, 1959).
- The character was later brought back by writer Grant Morrison in Final Crisis where in a CBR interview they stated:
- "With The Human Flame, I wanted a Martian Manhunter villain, and I couldn't find a really good one. Then, looking through the old Showcase Presents books, I discovered this stupid guy called Mike, who declared himself to be The Human Flame. And he wore a homemade costume with six nipples that shot flames. So I just thought this is a great way to start this book because the idea is that Libra gives all the villains a very simple choice, he says, 'Follow me and I'll give you your heart's desire'. And that's it. And some of the villains naturally say, 'Prove it'. So the Human Flame is one of the first to fall in with Libra and he says, 'If you can get revenge on my old enemy, who has had me stuck in jail for the last five years, I'll follow you anywhere'. I needed a small-scale dumb guy, who could make very big waves and open the book with a shock moment and The Human Flame fit the bill."
