Biography

Francis Stone was a member of the Firecrackers, one of the gangs in the Big Bang.

He was depicted as a school bully harassing Virgil Hawkins. Francis Stone and his gang targeted Virgil, mocking and physically intimidating him. Later, during the “Big Bang” event at Paris Island, Francis was exposed to experimental tear gas laced with a mutagen, which transformed many of the gang members into metahumans. Francis emerged with pyrokinetic powers, immediately testing them by igniting objects in his path and reveling in the destruction. (Static v1 #1) Francis—now calling himself Hot-Streak—began using his new powers for criminal activity. He torched rival territory with bursts of flame, intimidating others into submission and solidifying his place among the “Bang Babies.” His fire powers made him overconfident, and when he encountered Static, Hot-Streak engaged him in battle by launching fireballs and streams of flame. Static countered by using electromagnetic fields to deflect and absorb the heat, forcing Hot-Streak to retreat when his tactics failed. (Static v1 #2) Hot-Streak returned to directly challenge Static again. He set a public space ablaze to draw attention, threatening civilians and daring Static to intervene. Francis demonstrated little concern for collateral damage, hurling fire indiscriminately while boasting about his superiority. The fight ended when Static manipulated metal from the environment to bind and neutralize him, extinguishing his flames with tactical precision. Despite the defeat, Hot-Streak’s persistence marked him as one of Static’s recurring adversaries. (Static v1 #3)

After becoming exposed to a mutagen at the Big Bang, Stone gained the abilities of pyrokinesis. Renaming himself Hotstreak, he formed his own street gang called the "5-Alarm Crew". He is also indirectly responsible for Virgil Hawkins becoming the superhero Static; Hawkins had come to the Big Bang intending to kill Stone in the confusion, and, although he had realized he couldn't go through with the plan, Hawkins was still in the area when the mutagen was released, and thus gained powers of his own.

He was responsible for bullying Frieda Goren where he intended to win her as a prize in a small skirmish between his gang and another; when the 5-Alarm Crew attempt to get Frieda again, Static and Hotstreak face off against each other. Hotstreak defeats Static when the hero is shocked upon learning his foe's previous identity. After confiding in a rescued Frieda, Static returns to defeat Hotstreak. Hotstreak returns as an enforcer for the white supremacist group "Sons of Odin" (ironic due to his preference for urban rap and slang) to disrupt a gay pride march. After a skirmish with Static, he is shot by Static's friend Rick (who had come out to his friends not long before). . Now in his late 20's, Francis attacks his high school reunion after having just recently been released from prison. Going by the new name of Firewheel, Francis rampages through the reunion, claiming that he realized that Static is most likely one of his old classmates. After Static arrives and defeats Francis, he flees the scene, only to attack the school again the next evening during a football game. During his final battle with Static, Francis is finally defeated after being struck by a goalpost the hero had thrown using his magnetic abilities.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Francis Stone was a Caucasian male with a lean but muscular build, red hair, and a perpetually aggressive expression. After the Big Bang, he adopted the name Hot-Streak and began wearing flame-themed attire, often depicted in red and orange clothing with flame insignias. His visual design emphasized his volatile and fiery nature, contrasting with Static’s cooler-toned costume. (Static v1 #1)

In personality, Francis was portrayed as arrogant, violent, and domineering. Even before gaining powers, he exhibited bullying behavior, picking on weaker classmates like Virgil to establish dominance. After gaining pyrokinetic abilities, this arrogance grew into outright recklessness, with Francis often prioritizing flashy displays of firepower over strategy. His impulsive, aggressive nature made him a dangerous but predictable foe. (Static v1 #1)

Powers and abilities

In powers, Hot-Streak possessed pyrokinetic abilities as a result of the mutagen exposure at the Big Bang. He could generate and project fire from his hands, launching fireballs, streams of flame, and igniting surfaces at will. His control over flames was raw but effective, and he demonstrated the ability to sustain intense heat during prolonged fights. Despite this, his powers had limits—once exhausted, he became vulnerable, particularly against opponents who could counter or absorb heat. (Static v1 #2)

Hotstreak's powers are super speed and the psionic ability to manipulate flame by channeling the friction he accumulated by moving at high speeds (the air friction he creates by his extreme speed allows him to generate intense flame; in the DC Comics-produced Milestone trading card series, it is called "Hyper-kinetic Pyrokinesis"). He is able to shape the flame as he desires, increasing or decreasing its heat, intensity, and size—hence the newly assumed handle of "Hotstreak."
