History
The Hosts were a highly advanced extraterrestrial species that were noted to had inhabited the galaxy. (Episode: Pilot) Their homeworld was said to be located some 398.77 parsecs from the planet Earth. (Episode: Sierra Maestra) Their origins were largely unknown except that the species had their consciousness placed within an orb-like device that could be used to pilot a bipedal mechanical. It was not known if they were manufactured by another race or if they were once an organic race who transcended their physical bodies. The only thing known was that there was only a limited number of Hosts created with them numbering only around 100 individuals. (Episode: End of the Road)
At some point, they were noted to had waged war against an enemy that was more powerful than them. This caused them to flee where they looked to re-establish themselves from a new world. (Episode: Sierra Maestra)
Their original calculations held that it would be years or perhaps decades before their enemy had caught up with them. (Episode: The Emerald City) Approaching Earth, the Hosts used an algorithm to sort humans into different groups for their purposes. (Episode: The Big Empty)
During the Arrival, two of the Hosts were noted to had present in the fighting by the city of Dallas. (Episode: Gateway) A human resistance group was responsible for setting off a massive EMP that killed two of the Hosts. In response, the aliens fired a weapon from space that turned the sand to literal glass for hundreds of miles in every direction. (Episode: End of the Road) Thus, the city was flattened to a sheet of glass and was a reminder of what the Hosts were capable of when angered. (Episode: Gateway)
It was noted that the Hosts targeted anyone of a military, intelligence or law enforcement background for elimination. This resulted in some going underground where they took on new identities to avoid being eliminated. (Episode: Pilot)
The continued actions of the Resistance resulted in a bombing at the Santa Monica bloc's gateway. This resulted in a more concerted effort to find and track down the mysterious Geronimo. Proxy Governor Alan Snyder's forces by this point had recently arrested Will Bowman in an attempt to enter Santa Monica. He decided to enlist the former FBI agent and Army Ranger in hunting down the Resistance cells as his expertise made him a skilled in counter-insurgency operations. (Episode: Pilot)
A Host was sent to visit the Los Angeles bloc and was being transported via train as a VIP visitor. The resistance came to learn of a high priority target travelling through the underground and looked to intercept. This saw a bomb being detonated that killed the Hosts guard and damaged the alien with its gauntlet being stolen by the human resistance fighters. Homeland Security was able to recover the Hosts body thus preventing the aliens from retaliating against the bloc though the gauntlet remained missing. (Episode: Gateway)
Overview
In appearance, the Hosts were seemingly a humanoid race that wore a mechanical body and had personal computers on their gauntlets. (Episode: Gateway) In reality, this was simply a shell for the true alien which resided in an orb that was placed in the head with this housing its consciousness. (Episode: End of the Road) There were multiple factions within their society with one being a group of hardliners. (Episode: Ronin)
Due to their nature, the Hosts were said to possess a hive mind that linked their consciousness together. However, there were only a limited number of Hosts with the death of one of their kind being deeply felt by the species. Thus, the killing of any Host brought about a harsh response from the rest of their kind. Meanwhile, the destruction of their property such as drones drew irritation from the Hosts as they had to expend resources to replace the machine. (Episode: End of the Road)
Their colonies that had native intelligent life on them had their populace being divided into groupings that were sorted by an algorithm. An individuals fate was determined by which group they were classified in as some worked in government, others as labourers and others allowed to live as civilians. Among these was a special class called the Outliers who had special privileges assigned to them such as not being targeted by drones. These people were abducted and place in stasis chambers where they were shipped into space for the Hosts purposes. (Episode: The Big Empty) Conquered territory had a native being placed in the position of a Proxy Governor. (Episode: Pilot)
On Earth, they came to gain a number of collaborators among the humans who helped them maintain the Occupation with these forming organizations that included:
- Global Authority : (Episode: Brave New World)
- Transitional Authority : (Episode: Brave New World)
- Department of Homeland Security : a military branch that served as enforcers for the Global Authority. Due to red-coloured berets and hats, they tended to be called the Redhats by other humans. (Episode: Brave New World)
The Hosts were said to only allow the most basic amenities for their conquered subjects. As such, luxury items and even medicines for common ailements were denied to people. On Earth, this saw coffee no longer being available nor insulin. (Episode: Pilot) Blocs that had no future as part of the Hosts planned suffered through an event known as the Total Rendition. This saw all the people in the area being rounded up and taken away to certain facilities such as the Factory. (Episode: Ronin)
Any intrusions into their territory saw the first response being a search and rescue with the area being locked down. (Episode: Maquis)
A key symbol of Host's authority was their use of Drones that were flying machines that were armed. (Episode: Pilot)
In reality, the Factory was being used as a manufacturing site for a massive planetary defensive grid that would be based around the Earth. (Episode: End of the Road)
