History
The Brotherhood of the Horadrim was a group of mortal mages and mystics in Sanctuary that were brought together by the Archangel Tyrael to aid in the capture of the Prime Evils during the Dark Exile where they were banished to the world of man. They were chosen from selected sorcerers from the mage-clans in the East whose lands had been ravaged by the demonic evils that had plagued the region. According to some accounts, there were ten members that initially made up the Horadrim order. The organization officially coalesced in the eastern lands of Kehjistan when a powerful archangel named Tyrael gathered the greatest mortal spellcasters from the planet's rival magical clans. This core defensive alignment included the Enchanter Jered Cain, the Vizjerei sorcerer Nor Tiraj, and the enigmatic archmage Tal Rasha, who assumed absolute tactical command over the collective's operations. Armed with specialized crystalline artifacts known as Soulstones, the group managed a series of high-stakes tracking campaigns to systematically hunt down and capture Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto before the demons could reduce human civilization to absolute atomic oblivion. The assembly established its permanent, heavily fortified tracking hubs and underground research vaults across separate regional sectors to permanently lock the entities beneath the earth's surface.
During the attack on Mephisto's Fortress of Bone, the army led by the Horadrim was nearly overwhelmed by the legions of the damned.
Prior to the confrontation with Baal, the Horadrim's founding members imbued their essence into vessels. They imbued their memory, power, and accomplishments. While the Horadrim had conquered Sanctuary's greatest evils, they could not conquer death. It was intended that the crystal pass on the original members' traits to future Horadrim.
Following Diablo's capture, Zoltun Kulle took leave of the order and returned to Kehjistan to pursue his studies of magic. Little of him was heard for years until reports reached the Horadrim that he had built an archive beneath the desert sands and had begun a number of strange experiments. Experiments that centered around an object called the Black Soulstone.
After the Prime Evils imprisonment, the Horadrim presumed that the three had been vanquished and the Horadrim's unstable fellowship began to dissipate. As a result, they began to abandon their sacred charge to safeguard the three Soulstones and instead the disparage mage-clans began to suffer from in-fighting amongst themselves over petty differences. The resultant conflicts thus dissolved their brotherhood but came to strength the evils that they had contained within the stones.
With Diablo's defeat, the Lord of Terror came to be incarcerated within the Black Soulstone which was to be kept in a secure location to prevent the release of the Prime Evils. Thus, the Horadrim were reformed by Tyrael and charged with this task by him as he was now mortal and among mankind. However, they came under attack by the fallen Archangel Malthael who sought to Black Soulstone for his own purposes and slayed a number of Horadrim where he took their souls. One of the members of the group was told by Tyrael to flee and bring the aid of the Neyaphem to help stop the machinations of Malthael and his Reapers.
Overview
In appearance, the Horadrim were a magical organization consisting of human mages that were brought together to stop the threat posed by the Prime Evils to the world. This specialized defense organization whose core historic field assembly and cloistered faculty consisted entirely of adult human males and females from various regional populations. They did not wear a uniform state military camouflages or traditional matching corporate jumpsuits, allowing individual champions to wear custom vestments that highlighted their specific magical houses. Their garments consisted of an elaborate, distinct mixture of flowing, high-collared scholarly robes, protective leather utility aprons, and structured fabric waist sashes finished in deep blue and gold colors, which they paired with long wooden staves and curved daggers to project absolute academic and spiritual authority.
They had comprehensive logs and exceptionally high scientific intellect to execute complex mathematical calculations, master deep-space astrological alignments, and process advanced linguistic translations centuries ahead of traditional mortal institutions. They did not possess a single shared, uniform superpower or collective physical invulnerability against corruption, relying instead on high-intensity martial arts training, immense private wealth, and a revolutionary technological breakthrough centered on angelic soul engineering.
Their specialized technology allowed them to manipulate raw spiritual energies, construct self-sustaining automated defense grids to fortify their vaults, and utilize Soulstones to permanently bind the consciousness of extra-planar entities. Their primary capabilities allowed separate units to override standard municipal police jurisdictions during supernatural emergencies, extract vital historical data by communicating directly with celestial beings, and maintain an unbroken, highly disciplined barrier of elemental defense capable of repelling cosmic invasions.
