Biography

Hidan (Japanese: 飛段, Hepburn: Hidan) was a male human ninja who was an inhabitant of Yugakaure in the Ninja World.

During his childhood, after hearing rumours about the Valley of Hell, Hidan went and found it out of curiosity. There, he was disgusted by the smell of sulphur, and discovered corpses all over the area. After returning and telling others of the corpses, they weren't surprised that the Chinoike Clan could not survive living in the valley, prompting Hidan to correct their assumptions and informing them that the bodies weren't skeletons but actual bodies, with their blood not dry. His story led to people suspecting Hidan of murdering them, as well as Yugakure ninja being dispatched to the area to investigate, during which they determined the slaughter to be a clan act. After Yugakure deteriorated from a shinobi village to a tourist site, Hidan became infuriated with how things were turning out. He believed that the shinobi that resided there were meant to kill, and thus slaughtered his neighbours before leaving Yugakure, and joining the cult-like faith known as Jashin, a religion that worshipped a deity of the same name. The primary teaching of this faith appears to be outright slaughter of those one consider's their neighbours, where anything less than utter destruction was considered a sin. Through experiments with Jashin's secret technique, Hidan was granted immortality.

Due to his homicidal rampages, Yugakure came to hire the Akatsuki with the task of eliminating Hidan with Pain sending Itachi Uchiha, Konan and Kakuzu for the task. Upon confronting them, he battled Kakuzu where he was able to destroy his opponents heart but was surprised to find out that he was still alive. It was then that Konan offered him a place in their organisation to which he accepted but only because he took an interest in the seeming immortality that Kakuzu had acquired. After joining the Akatsuki, Hidan came to be paired up with Kakuzu where the two were sent to capture the jinchūriki host of the Two-Tails.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Hidan was a male human who had medium-length grey hair that was slicked back and distinctive purple eyes. Before joining the Akatsuki, he wore no shirt, had bandages wrapped around his stomach, wore maroon pants with long, black shinobi sandals each bearing an attached zipper attached. After joining the Akatsuki, he remained with no shirt, but bears the organisation's cloak, which he kept slightly opened, revealing his Yugakure forehead protector around his neck and Jashin amulet; his forehead protector bore a slash across the village symbol, signifying he severed ties with it. He changes his bottoms to grey pants with matching shinobi sandals. He also wore dark green nail polish and his orange Akatsuki ring on his left index finger, which bears the kanji for 'three' (三, san). When not fighting, he was always seen with his Triple-Bladed Scythe on his back. After his fight with Asuma, Hidan lost part of his left ear and Kakuzu stitched his neck after he was briefly decapitated.

Hidan belonged to the Jashin religion that was a faith which worshipped a deity named Jashin. According to their belief, anything less than utter destruction was considered a sin. As such, Hidan greatly disliked needing to capture opponents alive, and makes sure to pray before battles where he cannot kill. As a part of his religion, Hidan owned a charm with an upside-down triangle inscribed inside a circle (the symbol is sometimes drawn right-side up) that he carries on a chain of beads. Hidan prayed to this charm before battles and asks that he get nothing short of a kill.

Once a battle has begun, Hidan disliked being interrupted or being forced to stop the fight, and it takes a great deal of persuasion to get him to comply. After battles, should he have time, Hidan performs a thirty-minute ritual in accordance with his religion, which seems to culminate by stabbing himself in the chest and lying upon the ground.

Although he was a member of Akatsuki, Hidan disliked many of the formalities reacquired for the allegiance, particularly being partnered with Kakuzu. Most specifically, he dislikes the fact that Kakuzu fights solely for money. Kakuzu also dislikes their partnership, and has little patience for Hidan's time-consuming battle style and rituals. Despite this, the two remain paired together as each is able to use the other's abilities to their advantage. Additionally, Hidan did not seem to like the Akatsuki leader and openly disrespected him in front of others. In fact, he did not seem to like anyone, and had not been seen showing any respect to anyone except Jashin. He also seems to use incredibly vulgar language at most any time, while always acting in an either very confident or very agitated manner.

Powers and abilities

Hidan was a very powerful shinobi, whose skills lead to Yugakure choosing to not deal with the S-rank missing-nin, as there was not a ninja in the village that could take him on. His skills were of a high enough standard to be recruited by Akatsuki.

The main technique used by Hidan was the Curse Technique: Death Controlling Possessed Blood (呪術・死司憑血, Jujutsu: Shiji Hyōketsu) that was a cursed jutsu that he used to kill his quarries.

The primary weapon used by him was the Triple-Bladed Scythe (三刃の大鎌, Sanjin no Ōgama) which he used to kill his foes.

He came to be inducted into the ranks of the Akatsuki organisation.

Notes

  • Hidan was created by Masashi Kishimoto where he featured in the setting of the Naruto universe.
  • In the Naruto Hiden: Sha no Sho Character Official Data Book, Kishimoto revealed that Hidan's design, with the skeletal patterns and scythe, were meant to resemble a shinigami (死神, "death god," "grim reaper"), because "Hidan uses curses and things". He also noted that he originally planned for the scythe to have a number of special tricks, but "didn't have time to show them all". It also showed that Masashi meant for Hidan to have bangs.
