The infection originated from an ancient Martian strain discovered in a permafrost sample, which the scientists then modified to bridge the gap between human and extraterrestrial biology. Upon contraction, the virus induced a rapid hyper-evolutionary state, causing victims to undergo grotesque physical mutations, including the growth of multiple limbs, extra eyes, and hardened bone plating. These 'Hercules' subjects possessed immense physical strength and durability but suffered from total cognitive collapse, reverting to a feral, predatory state of mind. As Midnighter moved through the facility, he encountered piles of liquefied human remains, a by-product of the virus's tendency to cause biological meltdown in hosts who could not sustain the sudden evolutionary shift. The pathogen demonstrated an airborne transmission vector, successfully infecting Midnighter himself and forcing his enhanced immune system to combat the mutation in real-time. He eventually utilized a specialized antiviral agent provided by his handlers to purge the infection from his system before the facility was sterilized to prevent a global outbreak. The agency’s leadership viewed the loss of the Martian biological data as a catastrophic failure of national security, leading to an immediate breach of trust between the operative and his superiors. Throughout the encounter, the focus shifted from biological containment to espionage and betrayal, as Norton revealed that her true objectives were tied to a larger corporate conspiracy involving the weaponisation of extraterrestrial pathogens. Midnighter utilized his combat computers to predict the agency's retaliatory strikes, successfully neutralizing a specialized 'cleanup' team sent to tie up loose ends. The situation concluded with Midnighter severing his ties to the organization, leaving the researchers without their promised super-soldier serum and ensuring the virus remained an extinct threat in the wreckage of the Nautilus.
