Biography
Gwen Elizabeth Cooper
Cooper observed a specialized team from a rain-slicked balcony in Cardiff as they performed an unusual medical procedure on a murder victim in an alleyway. She followed the group to a hospital, where she witnessed a man she previously saw deceased walking through the corridors, lead by a mysterious figure in a greatcoat. After being spotted by the leader, Captain Jack Harkness, she retreated to her vehicle but later conducted an unauthorised investigation into the Torchwood Institute using police databases. She eventually tracked the team to a secluded plaza and discovered a hidden entrance to an underground facility located beneath a public fountain. Upon infiltrating the hub, she confronted Jack, who showed her the advanced technology and extraterrestrial artifacts held within the base. She unknowingly consumed a sedative-laced drink during their conversation, causing her to lose consciousness and awaken at home with no memory of the encounter. However, a specific visual cue triggered the return of her memories, leading her back to the Millennium Centre where she intervened in a confrontation involving a rogue porter and an alien combat medic. She witnessed the death of the porter and the subsequent suicide of a team member before accepting an offer to join the organization as its newest recruit. (Episode: Everything Changes) Gwen arrived at the Torchwood Hub to begin her first full day as a member of the team and received an orientation regarding the various extraterrestrial artifacts stored within the facility. She became preoccupied with a high-tech pendant discovered at a murder scene, which allowed the wearer to perceive fragments of the past. Despite warnings from her colleagues about the addictive nature of the device, she utilized it to investigate the final moments of a young woman killed in the 1960s. Her investigation led her to a local residential area where she confronted an elderly man who had committed the crime decades earlier. During the confrontation, she experienced a series of intense psychic visions that blurred the lines between the past and the present, nearly losing her sense of self in the process. She eventually surrendered the artifact to Jack Harkness, who locked it away in the vault to prevent further psychological harm. Throughout the day, she also struggled to balance her new secretive professional life with her domestic relationship, ultimately choosing to withhold the truth about her employment from her partner, Rhys Williams.
