Biography

Origin

Groot in Tales to Astonish v1 #13.

Groot

He came to reside in the Upper Canopy that was home to the Arbor Masters and the Coppice School. (Guardians of the Galaxy v3 #14)

One day, he was in the Herbarceous Habitats when he encountered other child Flora Colossi as himself that were attacking one of the Maintenance Mammals. Groot came to intervene where he fought his fellow fauna in defence of the small animals with this drawing the anger of the Arbor Masters. (Guardians of the Galaxy v3 #14)

The Flora Colossi during this time had forged an empire ruled through fear and conquest where they abducted people from other worlds for scientific experimentation. One of these probes saw them abduct a young girl named Hannah from Earth who was being studied by their kind. Groot came upon the young girl and opposed to his people's war-like ways decided to save the child with him sending her back to Earth. For his actions, he came to be punished by the Arbor Masters of the Flora Colossi. (Groot v1 #6)

The first Flora Colossi, matriarch elder Granopy, told Groot and his peer stories and to never go into the Deadwoods. However, one day, out of curiosity, Groot, Tweeg and Gleef checked the forbidden area, only to be captured by the criminal organization known as the Spoilers. They were taken off world to an outpost of the Spoilers on another planet, where they were freed by Private Mar-Vell of the Kree Starforce. Although wary of Mar-Vell at first, Groot and his friends got along with him as the Kree Private and his superior Captain So-Lar went to Planet X to see possible Spoiler activity there. (Groot v2 #1) However, they were ambushed by the Spoilers' Chainsaurs which killed So-Lar, while Groot, Gleef, Tweeg and Mar-Vell were saved by the intervention of the Centaurian hunter Yondar. Going to safer place, Yondar explained to the three little Flora colossi that she had a personal vendetta against the Spoilers and had arrived to Planet X after finding a piece belonging to a Flora colossi. She further elaborated that the motionless Flora colossi were already silent when she came and was unsure why they refused to speak, though she believed they were afraid and ashamed of the Spoilers' presence in their world. Telling the group that the Spoilers were stationed in the Deadwoods, Mar-Vell decided to attack it to prevent further worlds from falling to their hands. Groot and his fellow saplings accompanied Mar-Vell and Yondar into the Deadwoods, but again were attacked by the Chainsaurs, resulting in the capture of Mar-Vell, Tweeg and Gleef, while Groot and Yondar barely managed to escape. (Groot v2 #2)

Annihilation: Conquest

Guardians of the Galaxy

Groot with Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #2.

In their time as solo adventurers, Groot and Rocket Raccoon were having a libation in a low-down dirty spacer bar in low-down dirty spacer space when they were accosted by a group of Badoon who attempted to arrest them for 'Crimes against the Royal Brotherhood'. A quick shootout ensued and Rocket created an avenue of escape by shooting holes in the beer barrels causing the saloon patrons to stampede for the free beer. The duo made a hasty exit and were soon rocketing away when they found themselves pursued by Badoon Attack Cruisers. Rocket ordered Groot to take evasive action while he went to boost the stardrive to allow them to escape. He found the stardrive compartment empty and the scene cut to a shot of the surprised Rocket with a cliffhanger closing credits and Mojo proclaiming 'Best Pilot Episode Ever!'. (Annihilators: Earthfall v1 #1) They then found themselves staring at an empty compartment where a stardrive should be and questioning why they were hearing voices like suddenly their lives just got a narrator. Their ship blew up and they appeared in space in combat space armor bewildered at what just happened and how they got there. They targeted their Badoon attackers forcing one of the pilots to eject. They squeezed into his craft and it began to plummet to an ice planet below. Mojo called for the scene to cut and hit the Bio-Stasis on his stars. He proceeded to plan for the next scene expecting to make enormous money on the show. In the background, Rocket's Timely Inc. Shipment Processing Device analyzed the situation and informed the duo they were caught up in an artificial dramatic construction. They blasted through a wall realizing they were in a "Flarkin' TV Studio" and were confronted by a hologram of Mojo who opened fire with real weapons. (Annihilators: Earthfall v1 #2)

Cosmic Avengers

The Guardian Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy v4 #8.

After Star-Lord and Drax returned from the Cancerverse, the Guardians of the Galaxy were reformed. Groot, along with the rest of his team, aided the Avengers in fighting the returned Thanos. (Avengers Assemble v2 #6) Thanos managed to get a Cosmic Cube from the United States Army, with which he escaped to Moord, the homeland of the Badoon. The Guardians arrived at the Avengers Tower and informed the Avengers about the situation. They joined the Guardians to fight Thanos and the Badoon. (Avengers Assemble v2 #7) After Thanos apparently killed the Elders of the Universe, to impose his supremacy, he became one with the Cosmic Cube and killed the Avengers as well as the Guardians. But actually, they were sent to the Cancerverse along the Elders, there, Tony Stark found that Thanos' weapon wasn't actually a Cosmic Cube and that it had defects. They bargained with the Collector, in exchange of a weapon capable of deactivating the "Cube" and return to Earth, the Avengers and the Guardians would let Thanos to be defeated by the Elders. With the help of other members of the Avengers, Thanos was defeated and sent to punishment by the Elders. (Avengers Assemble v2 #8)

All-New Guardians of the Galaxy

Alongside Rocket, they travelled to the Stohlad Ring where they were attacked by a masked figure later revealed to be the Gardener. Groot sacrificed his life to hold back the Elder of the Universe who seemingly desired the Flora Colossus for a special plan. However, a piece of Groot survived on Rocket's fur which was cultivated allowing him to regrow but he remained trapped in a small size rather than return to his full size for an unknown reason. (All-New Guardians of the Galaxy v1 #9)

In his stunted sapling form, Groot accompanied the Guardians on a daring heist aboard a heavily guarded vault belonging to both the Collector and the Grandmaster. Despite his reduced size, he was still capable of limited movement and performs minor acts of support, such as simple crowd control using his vines. The team came to be concerned about Groot's condition and he himself appeared confused by his inability to grow. (All‑New Guardians of the Galaxy v1 #1) During the breakout from the Collector’s fortress, Groot provides crucial assistance by triggering alarms—he innocently removes a security device from the wall in a moment of curiosity, inadvertently initiating a defensive lockdown. Though this complicates the escape, it gives the Guardians a pretext to fight in self-defense rather than appear as thieves. Groot’s behavior here highlights his limited understanding but willingness to help. (All‑New Guardians of the Galaxy v1 #2) Although Groot remains in sapling form, he reacts to the team’s tensions—particularly Drax’s vow of non‑violence—by offering emotional support. He’s shown brushing against Drax’s leg, comforting him during a moment of doubt before an impending gunfight. This small gesture underscores Groot’s emotional intelligence and his role as the team’s moral conscience. (All‑New Guardians of the Galaxy v1 #4)

During the battle, Groot managed to convince the Gardener of how his actions were wrong and noted the poison within him. He helped cure him with the Elder revealing that he fell into a madness due to the machinations of Loki who had poisoned him. In repentance, he healed Groot where he restored him to his original state where he went to do battle with the giant Flora Colossus called Scar. (Infinity Countdown v1 #1)

Final Gauntlet

Mourning Rocket in Guardians of the Galaxy v5 #10.

Groot joined a cosmic coalition to prevent Thanos’s resurrection. He used his innate ability to sense cosmic energy to locate Thanos’s severed corpse aboard Knowhere. Later, he collaborates with Star-Lord and a roster of powerful allies to breach the Knowhere vaults where Thanos lies, standing firm as a silent guardian during the infiltration and aiding in covering the team’s retreat once Hela attempted to resurrect Thanos. (Guardians of the Galaxy v5 #1) Whilst the world debates who will host Thanos’s reincarnation, Groot assisted in the evacuation of Knowhere’s civilians as the Black Order launched a counterstrike. He uses his sprawling limbs to create shielded corridors, shielding fleeing residents against wave after wave of enemy fire, showcasing his growing protective instinct designed to guard life itself. (Guardians of the Galaxy v5 #2) Groot silently scouted the Knowhere underbelly alongside Rocket, threading through shadowy corridors and disabling security systems. His presence enables Star-Lord to discover hidden archives of the Black Order’s plans. Groot also assisted in evacuating Hela away from the revived Thanos corpse, ensuring she cannot complete the ritual. (Guardians of the Galaxy v5 #3) As the coalition fights Hela and the Black Order in Knowhere’s core, Groot channels his strength into reinforcing weakened vault doors, preventing Hela from accessing the Resurrection Gauntlet. He quietly binds a broken panel with his roots so the team can buy crucial minutes for Moondragon to complete the ritual nullification process. (Guardians of the Galaxy v5 #4) Once Thanos’s head is removed and the ritual halted, the coalition mounts a final defense. Groot creates a protective barrier of living vines that absorb the rebound explosive force unleashed by Thanos’s head fragment. His sudden growth into a towering tree-guardian averts destruction of Knowhere’s heart and ensures the escape of his teammates. (Guardians of the Galaxy v5 #5) During the boarding of Knowhere, Groot uses his expanding limbs to entangle and slow down members of the Black Order, providing critical support that allowed his teammates to disrupt Hela and Thanos’s upcoming resurrection ritual. (Guardians of the Galaxy v5 #6)

Exhausted but determined, Groot joined the Guardians on a rest stop that quickly turned into a battle against the Universal Church of Truth. He used his roots to tether falling debris and protect civilians when the Church’s forces attack. (Guardians of the Galaxy v5 #7) Amid the Church's takeover, Groot confronts twisted visions of a desolate cosmos in his mind. He planted himself within an energy node at the Church's spiritual locus, using his consciousness to destabilize the Church’s ritual nexus and give his allies a fighting chance. (Guardians of the Galaxy v5 #8) Later, amidst apocalyptic landscapes conjured by the Church, Groot shields Rocket during a deadly onslaught, extending his bark-thickened arms to form a barrier. Despite the magical backlash, Groot stood firm—his unwavering defense galvanizing the Guardians to hold their ground. (Guardians of the Galaxy v5 #9) To save his teammates from an energy backlash after the Church’s collapse, Groot channels the backlash into himself, blossoming a towering colossus of vines and branches that absorbs the energy surge. Once he stabilizes, he reverts to his familiar form, sustaining only superficial damage. (Guardians of the Galaxy v5 #12)

Dark Olympians

Grootfall

The Grootfall in Guardians of the Galaxy v7 #5.

He then retrieved Granopy’s ancient essence, triggering a cosmic impulse. While silent, Groot’s vast form channels eldritch energies that ripple across space. His transformation from lifebringer to conqueror becomes clear—as the balance of life was replaced with relentless expansion. (Guardians of the Galaxy v7 #6)

Awakening as a colossal, planet‑devouring force, Groot loomed over Galilee IV. His body radiates immense energy as he begins absorbing biomass to fuel his growth. Despite the horror, Groot made no attempt to attack the remaining Guardians but instead silently asserts his presence, signaling the start of a new, uncontrollable transformation. (Guardians of the Galaxy v7 #1) As Grootfall escalated, Groot began absorbing an entire moon’s ecosystem causing his transformation to accelerate. As his mass expanded exponentially, he began devouring life in every direction. The Guardians, alongside settlers, scrambled to evacuate as Groot shifts from sapient guardian to living cataclysm. (Guardians of the Galaxy v7 #2) Still a force of nature, Groot becomes a target during a crisis on a Spartax farming world. He hovers silently as Star-Lord attempts a telepathic connection, but Groot's thoughts prove impenetrable—revealed only as fleeting hopes to find Rocket, telling the team their friend may still be inside. (Guardians of the Galaxy v7 #3) Grootfall’s destructive trajectory shifted when it targets a frontier settlement. Groot ripped towering trees from the soil, incorporating them into his form as he merges worlds with his being. Civilians and wildlife were absorbed indiscriminately. (Guardians of the Galaxy v7 #4) During the siege at Torment Pass, Groot unleashed a devastating 'seed storm', launching massive spores that uproot entire forests on impact. This act of terraforming ensures no escape for enemy forces, as the spores germinate instantaneously to swallow the battlefield. (Guardians of the Galaxy v7 #5)

Deep within Grootfall, Hulkling and Wiccan discover a warped forest of living trees. Groot—ever present—serves as the axis, supporting life and consciousness fragments of his former teammates. He does not attack them; instead, he offers a silent invitation to understand his 'great work'. (Guardians of the Galaxy v7 #7) Groot continues terraforming moons and minor planets, only slowing once the Guardians begin their attempts to rebuild a psychic bridge. Though huge and impassive, his immense roots rumble with contained energy—a visual testament to Groot’s ongoing organic process. (Guardians of the Galaxy v7 #8) When Hulkling and Wiccan return to the 'great filter' site, they witness fragments of Guardians existing as tree-like reflections in Groot’s flesh. Groot silently watched them depart, offering no push or pull—merely existing as a monument to his own transformation. (Guardians of the Galaxy v7 #9) As Hulkling calls for a ceasefire, Grootfall calmed for the first time, its surface gently pulsing. Groot’s form stabilizes—no longer expanding, but blooming. He leaves telltale rings of fertile ground where devastation had been, signaling that Groot’s work is complete and the terraforming process has ended. (Guardians of the Galaxy v7 #10)
