Biography
Origin
Norman Osborn is a male human who was native who existed on Earth-1610 in the Multiverse. (Ultimate Spider-Man v1 #1)
Norman theorized that if the OZ combined with spider DNA were behind Parker's abilities of a spider then Norman with OZ combined with his own DNA would become a heightened version of himself. However, his experiment would go wrong where it resulted in an explosion that affected his son and Dr. Otto Octavius whilst Norman was transformed into a grotesque, demon-like monster. (Ultimate Spider-Man v1 #3) In an attempt to destroy all evidence of his existence, the Green Goblin killed Norman's wife but his son Harry managed to escape while the house was burning down. (Ultimate Spider-Man v1 #4) The next day, he attacked Harry's school but was stopped by Spider-Man. During the fight, the Green Goblin plummeted off a bridge into the river where he was seemingly killed in the process. (Ultimate Spider-Man v1 #7)
Sometime after this, Osborn partnered up with Miles Morales of Earth-616, calling himself Ultimatum. Together they eventually travelled over to Ultimatum's native universe for unknown reasons and encountered the Miles Morales from Earth-1610, though Miles was not quite able to fully remember who Norman was. After recognising who Miles was underneath his mask, Ultimatum ordered Norman to spare him. (Miles Morales: Spider-Man v1 #10)
Overview
Personality and attributes
Due to overdosing on OZ, he suffers from hallucinations. These include seeing everything through a blood-red filter and creatures called 'plasmids' tormenting him. (Ultimate Spider-Man v1 #11) Ultimatum created a drug which was culled from Norman's blood and would turn its users into creatures similar to Norman, but smaller dubbed Goblinoids. (Ultimate Spider-Man v1 #19) When Spider-Man captured some of Ultimatum's drug, Green Goblin attacked him once again, but Miles was able to hand him to the police. (Ultimate Spider-Man v1 #14) However, he escaped and alongside the Goblinoids attacked Miles' school, but after being defeated by the hero, he escaped once again. (Ultimate Spider-Man v1 #15)
Powers and abilities
Experimentation in using OZ combined with his own DNA resulted in his transformation into a muscular, grotesque, goblin-looking monster. In this form, he was granted superhuman strength, reflexes, stamina, speed and durability that enabled him to leap great distances. He was also pyrokinetic as he could throw flaming balls of destructive energy. (Ultimate Spider-Man v1 #4)
Green Goblin’s great strength also extends into the highly developed muscles of his legs and allow him to jump great distances. He was able to destroy helicopters by jumping at them and tearing them apart. (Ultimate Spider-Man v1 #113)
In time, he came to 'evolve' where he could control his transformations into an intelligent incarnation of the Green Goblin through the use of OZ injections. (Ultimate Spider-Man v1 #11) Norman's body kept evolving after he became Green Goblin, he grew more powerful, every time he evolved. (Ultimate Spider-Man v1 #113)
Notes
- The Green Goblin was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley where he made his first appearance in Ultimate Spider-Man v1 #1 (September 2000).
- This incarnation of the character was the Ultimate Marvel version that was based on the Green Goblin created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.
Alternate Versions
- In Ultimate Spider-Man v3 #5 (2024), an alternate version of Norman Osborn appeared in the new Ultimate Marvel reality that was designated as Earth-6160 in the Multiverse. Norman Osborn was the CEO of North American Union corporation Oscorp Industries, and husband to Emily Osborn and father to heir Harry Osborn. At some point when Harry was seven, he and his son participated in a baseball game together, despite their lack of enthusiasm for the sport. In the years that followed, Norman and his wife were unfortunate victims of an attack on Stark Tower perpetrated by a secret cabal comprising leaders from the seven different continents that constituted the world. This was achieved through the utilisation of a Stane/Stark Industries orbital station, which framed the terrorist event as the fault of the believed deceased Tony Stark. Moments before his death, Norman berated Harry for being immature and ordered him to change. Months later, Harry reminisced about his father at a memorial event held in memory of the victims of said attack.

Video games
- In Ultimate Spider-Man, the Ultimate Marvel incarnation of the Green Goblin appeared in the setting of the 2005 video game where he was voiced by actor Peter Lurie. Originally held in stasis by S.H.I.E.L.D., Osborn broke out when the Beetle snuck aboard the ship he was contained on. Whether his release was part of Beetle's plan, or a side effect off gathering a sample from the Goblin is unclear, but once released, Norman soon made his way back to New York, where he promptly started a rampage through the city. He was pursued by Spider-Man, and the hero soon defeated and subdued the Goblin once more.
- In Ultimate Spider-Man: Total Mayhem, the Ultimate Green Goblin appeared in the setting of the video game. Norman, as the Green Goblin, controlled an army of OZ-infused symbiotes and slowly began to transform all of New York City into Goblin-like creatures. He encountered Spider-Man in a baseball stadium, where he sent an army of OZ Symbiote-infected citizens after him. He was able to sense that his Goblin army was being diminished and concluded that a cure was being developed. With Spider-Man occupied with the OZ symbiotes, Norman ran to find the cure and destroy it. During his search for Dr. Conners' cure, he was approached, once again, by Spider-Man, who had defeated the OZ Symbiotes. Norman did battle with him on a rooftop, unleashing everything he had on him but was defeated in the end. As S.H.I.E.L.D. agents began to take him away, he claimed that Peter would have been his "trusted heir", and that they would've led an 'Osborn empire'. Peter claimed he liked the city just the way it was and swung off.
- In Marvel: Future Fight, the Ultimate Green Goblin appeared as an alternate skin for the Green Goblin in the setting of the mobile video game.
