Pre-Crisis
The Great Disaster
A race of aliens known as the Visionaries forecast the future destruction of Earth in a cataclysm that would come to be known as the Great Disaster. The visionary who discovered this, Prof. Z, addressed the Council of Science and mapped out the precise incidents that would lead to the planet's ruin. He told them that the planet's industrial barons would rise to power and a civil war would ensue which would lead to a calamity known as the "Great Disaster". Seeking to prevent such a future from coming to pass, the Visionaries came to Earth and established a network known as the Global Peace Agency. In order to keep their alien origins a secret from Earth's populace, they used cosmetic spray to obscure their features. The people of Earth believed that the Global Peace Agency was made up of world leaders from various nations who intentionally hid their features so as to promote equality between races and cultures. The Global Peace Agency began policing the planet, incarcerating vast numbers of crime lords, corrupt politicians and potential megalomaniacs. Prof. Z however was dubious of their efforts. Though the GPA was making great strides in their efforts to eradicate crime, he still believed that Earth was destined to fall in the Great Disaster.
For all of OMAC's efforts, the Great Disaster could not be averted. Very little is known as to the true causes of the Disaster, but what scant evidence exists points towards a mysterious energy wall known only as the Vortex. Earthquakes and tidal waves erupted all across the globe and the nations of Earth found themselves at the mercy of nuclear Armageddon. Shortly before the final bastions of humanity were to fall, a scientist named Doctor Michael Grant invented a mutagenic chemical known as Cortexin. Although he would not survive long enough to witness the fruits of his labor, the Cortexin drug would succeed in carving out its own legacy in the wake of global annihilation.
Many years ago, on an Earth of an alternate dimension, there lived a man named Dr. Michael Grant. Grant was a scientist who had developed an experimental chemical agent known as Cortexin. He tested his mutagenic drug on several species of animals inside of his laboratory including, apes, rats, bats and tigers. The exact purpose or nature of the Cortexin compound remains shrouded in mystery however. Shortly after beginning the initial stages of his experiments, the world fell sway to a global catastrophe commonly referred to as the Great Disaster. Earthquakes and tidal waves erupted all across the globe and the nations of Earth found themselves at the mercy of nuclear Armageddon. Dr. Grant did not survive long enough to see his experiments come to fruition, but the lasting after-effects produced a legacy that would endure for centuries. A large section of the Earth was rendered uninhabitable due to atmospheric nuclear radiation. However, the radiation produced a mutagenic side-effect with the surviving Cortexin-infected animals from Dr. Grant's labs. Not only were they safe from the long-term side-effects of nuclear fallout, but the strange drug permanently altered their genetic structure. With each successive generation, the various animal species began to evolve adopting specific physical human characteristics. Within two human generations, apes, birds, felines, canines and many other breeds were developing heightened intellect, bipedal locomotion, extra fingers, toes, thumbs and even the ability to articulate. As each race grew in strength and numbers, they began to form primitive tribal societies and family clans. Many of the clans did not live in harmony with their cousins, and a culture of survival of the fittest soon developed among them.
The biological landscape of the post-disaster Earth experienced a radical, unprecedented mutation when a highly weaponized, mutagenic virus known as the Toxic Plague swept across the surviving global populations. Instead of merely terminating its hosts, the biological agent permanently altered the genetic architecture of the planet's animal species, accelerating their evolutionary development and granting them humanoid bipedal forms, speech, and advanced cognitive reasoning capabilities. Within a few short generations, complex societies of highly aggressive, anthropomorphic tigers, apes, and rats emerged from the ruins, quickly establishing their own martial empires across the desolate geographic sectors. The surviving human population, suffering from severe generational trauma and cognitive regression due to the toxic environment, found themselves rapidly displaced at the bottom of the food chain, becoming primitive scavengers or enslaved laborers under the absolute rule of the newly ascendant animal warlords. (Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth v1 #1) The severe socio-ecological fragmentation of the ruined world reached a critical turning point as the highly militaristic Tiger Empire, led by the ruthless warlord Caesar, launched a massive expansionist campaign to secure the planet's remaining pre-disaster technological artifacts. Operating from the fortified ruins of the ancient American eastern seaboard, Caesar's shock troops systematically plundered abandoned military bunkers, salvaging advanced energy weaponry and armored vehicles to solidify their absolute dominance over rival animal factions. During these aggressive salvage operations, the tracking forces discovered a unique, highly literate human youth named Kamandi, who had been raised in absolute isolation inside a secure underground bunker by his grandfather. Realizing that this pristine human possessed rare historical knowledge regarding the pre-disaster world, the animal factions engaged in a series of violent, localized skirmishes to capture him, turning the shattered urban landscape into a volatile battleground for control of the past's remaining secrets. Post-Crisis
Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. The Monitors of the Multiverse and Raymond Palmer of New Earth had foreseen a Great Disaster that would befell an Earth. Ray Palmer discovered this after venturing into Earth-51 and learned from notes written by this universe's Ray Palmer of the Morticoccus virus, which potentially precipitated the viral outbreak of catastrophic proportions. In a turn of events, Karate Kid of the Legion of Super-Heroes was infected with Morticoccus virus and became patient zero for the Great Disaster.
The Great Disaster was a cataclysmic event that was noted to had devastated the planet Earth. A group of peaceful, humanoid aliens arrived on Earth with the foreknowledge of a coming Great Disaster. Hoping to prevent the Disaster from ever taking place, they established a united defense force known as the Global Peace Agency. One of the GPA's scientists, a human named Professor Myron Forest created a powerful satellite computer system called Brother Eye to help oversee over Earth's affairs. He also became provincial in transforming an army stockroom clerk named Buddy Blank into a one-man army corps. Using the name O.M.A.C., Buddy worked in the interests of the Global Peace Agency in fighting Earth's enemies. (OMAC v1 #1)
After Earth-51 was destroyed and recreated, Monitor Solomon deliberately let the Great Disaster happen in this universe by sending the infected Karate Kid and his friends there. Ray Palmer and Cadmus' scientists failed to prevent the outbreak, as humans de-evolved to develop animal features, and animals developed human features. As a result, civilization fell as humanity panicked and nations accused one another for causing the outbreak, causing a nuclear holocaust across the Earth. Furthermore, the universe fell into the same circumstances as Earth when Earth-51's Green Lantern Hal Jordan attempted to seek help from alien worlds, inadvertently spreading the Morticoccus virus.
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.
Malcolm Merlyn posing as an elderly version of Green Arrow from the future enlisted Amanda Waller's help to supposedly avert the Disaster. He claimed that Team Arrow were responsible for the Disaster and they therefore needed to prevent Team Arrow from ever fully uniting. They secretly installed teleportation devices in Team Arrow's necks, which randomly teleported them through time and space if enough of them ever managed to group together in one place. In reality, this was all an elaborate scheme to make Green Arrow miserable by keeping him from his family, and possibly even cause the Disaster to occur. (Green Arrow v7 #5)
Overview
In appearance, the Great Disaster had unfolded like a cosmic cataclysm that reset the world. Humanity had been nearly extinguished, with survivors retreating underground. The skies had gone dark, the oceans had receded or boiled away, and vast regions of the planet lay scorched by mutant radiation storms. In its aftermath, the world that emerged was both eerie and vibrant: civilizations rebuilt atop ruin, but not by humanity—it was soon dominated by highly evolved, anthropomorphic animals who scavenged, farmed, and fought across the remnants of human architecture .
The war had been fought across every continent and ocean: shorelines held sinking city‑ruins, while once-thriving metropolises crumbled into skeletal towers protected only by radiation barriers. The Vortex—a mysterious energy wall—had formed a permanent scar, linked to tectonic and tidal upheaval that triggered escalating global earthquakes and volcanic activity. Underground and bunker networks beneath New York, Washington, and isolated rural areas served as humanity’s last bastions. Scientists like Dr. Michael Grant had tried to stem the chaos by unleashing Cortexin—a mutagenic agent that unintentionally robbed humans of higher intelligence while granting animals sentience—affecting every species from rodents to tigers .
The Disaster touched every living thing on Earth. Human society collapsed into tribal savagery, with most survivors reverting to primal instincts, unable to speak or reason. In contrast, animals mutating under the Cortexin virus took up human-style languages, tools, and governance. By Kamandi’s era—some decades after the event—humans were largely enslaved as beasts of burden or worshipped as ritual relics, while tiger-ruled kingdoms, dog scientists, and gorilla representatives held dominion .
Achievements after the Disaster were uneven but significant. Dr. Grant’s Cortexin experiment led to an unintended evolutionary leap, creating a society of intelligent animal men living in structured communities, war‑based hierarchies, and cultural systems. Meanwhile, genetic and mechanical relics of pre‑Disaster civilization—like underground bunker computers, defunct O.M.A.C. satellites, and time-travel fissures—represented traces of humanity’s technological peak. These became catalysts for stories and hope, especially as survivor families like Buddy Blank and his grandson Kamandi used them to preserve memory and seek restoration .
Before the Great Disaster, Earth had stood at a technological and geopolitical zenith under the Global Peace Agency. With the aid of Brother Eye and enhanced agents like OMAC (originally Buddy Blank), humanity had nearly achieved utopian peace. But this fragile stability masked deeper vulnerabilities. The Vortex—a dimensional fault influencing nuclear strikes—and weaponized biotechnology were being researched underground. Despite progress, human politics and ambition had set the stage for an apocalypse, initiated either by nuclear bombardment, radioactive disasters, or rogue mystic interference.
