History
The Dark Crystal was an event that occurred every thousand years on Thra, wherein its three suns would align. Aughra described the event as being possibly the end of the world...or its beginning. The first Conjunction resulted in the simultaneous creation of the Skeksis and Mystics from the UrSkeks through harnessing its power via the Crystal of Truth, and the planet's subsequent pillaging by the Skeksis. The second Conjunction would see the wounded Crystal healed by a Gelfling, Jen, and the reunification of the races and the return of Thra to its former splendor.
The cosmic event known as the Great Conjunction commenced when the three suns of the planet Thra—Solfon, Okkra, and Makra—aligned perfectly over the natural crystal castle, projecting a concentrated, single beam of pure stellar energy directly into the heart of the great Crystal. This historic alignment occurred exactly one thousand trine prior to the modern era, acting as a profound celestial event that fundamentally altered the evolutionary and spiritual trajectory of the planet. During this precise astronomical window, a highly advanced, translucent alien species known as the urSkeks utilized the immense focused light energy of the alignment to attempt a powerful purification ritual designed to purge their own internal spiritual imperfections. The group gathered around the crystal portal within the grand castle, hoping the immense cosmic power would open a direct gateway back to their distant homeworld. Instead, a critical spiritual imbalance within the participants caused the incoming stellar light to fracture violently upon hitting the crystal structure, setting off a massive environmental shockwave across the planet.
Overview
A Great Conjunction occurs every nine hundred and ninety-nine and one trine. Its arrival was noted as a herald for great change that could be good or bad.
The burning light focused towards Thra during the very first Great Conjunction is responsible for creating the Great Shaft and revealing the Crystal deep within the mountain. When a sun shone down the shaft of the Crystal, all life on Thra could feel the trembling from the Crystal. The Crystal sings quietly at the lesser conjunctions of the two Suns; but at the Great Conjunction, the song of the Crystal resounded through all the rocks of Thra.
