Biography
Origin
Ti'julk Mr'asz was a male being who came from the planet Vyrga jungle world of sentient insects. He was one of the planet's few free-thinkers among an otherwise conformist, hive-mind. He was also one of the few members of his race who manifested their latent power of teleportation. He was later selected by the people of his world to apply for membership into the Legion of Super-Heroes. Gates did not wish to partake of this lifestyle, for he felt that the United Planets was a fascist regime, but was summarily drafted into their ranks nonetheless. (Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #66)
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Gates was a male Vyrgan, distinguishable from the primarily humanoid Legionnaires by his insectoid physiology. He possessed a chitinous exoskeleton of deep green hue, with a rounded thorax and segmented limbs adapted for both land mobility and dexterous manipulation. His head was oval-shaped, equipped with two large, compound eyes that reflected light and provided wide-angle vision. He lacked a visible nose or ears, and his mandibles served as both a mouth and vocal apparatus. Gates had six limbs—four serving as legs for movement, and two functioning as arms with claw-like appendages capable of grasping and fine control. Extending from his back were thin, angular appendages resembling vestigial wings or sensory antennae, though they lacked flight function. Unlike most Legionnaires, Gates wore no traditional costume; instead, he retained his natural carapace and only adorned himself with the Legion flight ring and occasional communicators or gear. His form made him stand out immediately from his more humanoid comrades, emphasizing his alien origins. On account of his abilities, he was given the name Gates by others. (Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #66)
Gates was highly individualistic and considered himself a free sentient. He possessed a highly analytical, politically charged, and often sarcastic personality, grounded in his background as a citizen of the planet Vyrga—a collectivist society where individuals were assigned roles by a central authority. A staunch anti-authoritarian and self-proclaimed socialist, Gates often voiced skepticism of hierarchical organizations, including the United Planets and even the Legion itself. His presence in the Legion was not voluntary; he was conscripted by his planetary government to represent Vyrga as a gesture of cooperation with the Legion. (Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #66)
The reasoning for his recruitment into the Legion fueled his resentment toward the group's structure and purpose, though he ultimately came to form genuine bonds with several teammates. Gates frequently challenged leadership decisions, expressed disdain for perceived propaganda, and acted as the Legion’s moral critic. Despite his sharp tone and outsider perspective, Gates was fiercely loyal when lives were on the line, and his quick intellect made him a key strategic thinker in crises. His strong ideological stance and refusal to conform made him both a disruptive presence and a crucial voice of dissent within the team. (Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #66)
He was sent by his world as a draftee into the Legion of Super-Heroes with him not being happy about this assignment as he was forced into the role. At first, he refused to join what he deemed to be a commando unit that consisted of teenagers that he believed were a deaths quad. (Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #66)
Powers and abilities
As a native of Vyrga, Gates was a member of a teleporter-evolved species whose defining trait was the innate ability to generate circular portals in space. He had the natural ability to generate portals allowing him to transport himself from one location to another. These warp gates functioned as instantaneous spatial doorways that could connect two points across short or moderate distances. Gates could manifest them through bio-organic means, often with an audible pop and visual flash, and could control both entry and exit points with considerable precision. His portals were large enough to transport multiple individuals or equipment and could be maintained for several seconds before fading. This trait made Gates invaluable for rapid extraction, infiltration, or battlefield maneuvering. The portals were not limited to line-of-sight and could bend around obstacles if Gates had sufficient awareness of the target location. As a side effect of this power, Gates demonstrated an intuitive understanding of spatial geometry and environmental awareness, allowing him to deploy warp gates tactically with speed and foresight. It was shown that he could use this power on others thus teleporting them to different locations. Offensively, he could open a portal underneath his foes and send them somewhere else.
