History

The Gas Gang

After a freak accident involving a giant magnet and cosmic rays, a roboticized and malevolent Doctor Will Magnus turned against his own creations, constructing the Gas Gang to prove his intellectual superiority. This bizarre quintet—comprising Oxygen, Helium, Carbon Monoxide, Carbon Dioxide, and Chloroform—systematically dismantled the Metal Men by exploiting their molecular vulnerabilities. Oxygen initiated the assault by blasting the heroes with pure concentrated gas, causing their metallic bodies to oxidize and rust instantly, while Carbon Dioxide froze the team solid with a sub-zero discharge. Helium used its unique properties to inflate and lift the incapacitated robots into the air, and Chloroform emitted a 'laughing gas' variant that rendered the heroes' neural processors useless through hysterical, involuntary laughter. Carbon Monoxide rounded out the assault by attempting to smother the Metal Men in a thick, toxic cloud that obscured their sensors and weakened their structural integrity. The gang's chaos only ceased when Gold managed to consolidate his teammates' shattered forms into a giant makeshift pressurized vessel; by generating intense internal heat, he caused the gaseous villains to expand so rapidly that they underwent a molecular breakdown, eventually reverting back into a harmless, inert state which simultaneously broke the cosmic ray's hold over Magnus. Overview

In appearance, the Gas Gang manifested as a quintet of rotund, metallic canisters topped with humanoid heads, each uniquely designed to reflect the volatile chemical properties they contained. Created by a corrupted, robotised version of Professor Will Magnus, these entities functioned as sentient chemical dispensers that lacked the heroic morality of their metallic cousins. Together, they operated as a mobile chemical plant of destruction. (Metal Men v1 #6)

Members

  • Carbon Dioxide : depicted with a chilling, frosty exterior, capable of projecting blasts of dry ice that froze the heroes solid. (Metal Men v1 #6)
  • Carbon Monoxide : emitted a thick, suffocating soot that choked air intakes and obscured all visual sensors. (Metal Men v1 #6)
  • Chloroform : featured a sinister, masked visage and specialised in emitting 'sweet-smelling' vapours that could knock out organic beings or send robotic processors into a state of hysterical, laughing malfunction. (Metal Men v1 #6)
  • Helium : light-headed Helium possessed a balloon-like cranium, allowing him to float effortlessly while lifting heavy objects or expanding his volume to trap enemies. (Metal Men v1 #6)
  • Oxygen : sported a nozzle-like face and was capable of inducing rapid oxidation, turning the Metal Men's resilient bodies into brittle, rusted husks within seconds. (Metal Men v1 #6)

Notes

  • The Gas Gang was created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru where they made their first appearance in Metal Men v1 #6 (February, 1964).
