Biography

Fumikage Tokoyami (Japanese: 常闇 踏陰, Hepburn: Tokoyami Fumikage)

Tokoyami came to pass the U.A. Entrance Exam after scoring forty-seven villain points and ten rescue points. His efforts were enough to place him ninth overall in the exam. He attended the first day of school in Class 1-A where their homeroom teacher, Shota Aizawa, immediately brought the class to the training field for a Quirk Apprehension Test and claimed that whoever came in last would be expelled. Following the fitness test, Shota revealed the placements and Fumikage managed to score fifth place in the class. Shota then revealed that he was lying about expelling the last place student to make sure the students did their best. The next day, Fumikage and Class 1-A entered their first Basic Hero Training class with All Might. They met him at training ground beta after changing into their hero costumes. He split them up into teams of two and had them simulate a hero versus villain situation. Fumikage ended up paired with Tsuyu Asui on Team H. Class 1-A then returned to class after combat training and Fumikage decided to sit on a desk. He overheard everyone greet Izuku as he returned, and said they wre noisy. Then Tenya ran over to Fumikage and yelled at him to get off the desk. Fumikage silently refused and simply replied that Tenya was also being noisy.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Tokoyami’s defining feature was his birdlike head, shaped like that of a raven with a short, sharp beak and glowing red eyes. His human body was athletic and clad in the standard U.A. uniform or his hero costume—a dark tunic, high-collared cloak, and utility belt designed to allow Dark Shadow unrestricted movement.

Personality-wise, Tokoyami was marked by a poetic, brooding temperament, often speaking in a dramatic and philosophical tone. Despite his seemingly somber exterior, he possessed deep empathy and a quiet sense of humor. His interests leaned toward the gothic and introspective, favoring solitude, music, and contemplation over social activity. However, he remained deeply loyal to his classmates, and his stoic demeanor concealed a willingness to risk everything for their safety. His friendship with characters such as Shōji, Tsuyu Asui, and Midoriya highlighted his sense of camaraderie beneath the surface of his reserved nature.

By the time of his later missions, Fumikage Tokoyami had evolved from a quiet student into a confident, composed hero-in-training with a clear sense of balance. His journey was not about conquering darkness but understanding it—turning what others saw as a curse into a source of strength. The combination of discipline, intellect, and introspection made him a symbol of controlled power and moral integrity, embodying the idea that true heroism was not defined by light alone, but by how one commands the shadows.

Powers and abilities

Tokoyami’s Quirk, Dark Shadow, was one of the most versatile abilities in U.A.’s ranks. It manifested as a semi-sentient shadow creature that extended from his body, capable of immense strength, defense, and independent movement. Its power fluctuated with lighting conditions—stronger and wilder in darkness, weaker and more docile in bright light. This duality forced Tokoyami to master both restraint and strategy, learning to wield his Quirk as both a shield and a weapon without succumbing to its chaotic tendencies. Over time, he achieved the ability to partially manifest Dark Shadow in daylight through refined control, signifying his growing harmony with his power.
