The Forced Evolutionary Virus

The Pan-Immunity Virion Project originated in 2073 as a desperate biological defense initiative commissioned by the United States government to counter the threat of Chinese bioweapons and the devastating 'New Plague'. Initially developed by West Tek researchers in Southern California, the project sought to alter the human structure to provide total immunity to all known pathogens. By 2075, the scientific team led by Dr. Scott discovered that their experimental Batch 10-011 yielded startling side effects in animal subjects, including massive increases in muscle density and significant shifts in cellular composition. While the project failed to achieve its original goal of simple immunity, the researchers observed that the virus acted as a 'biological engine' that aggressively rewrote the host's DNA to 'improve' the organism. These results immediately caught the attention of the Department of Defense, which saw the potential to manufacture a new breed of super-soldiers. Consequently, the military officially seized the project in 2076, rebranding the mutagen as the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV) and transitioning the research from a medical endeavor into a classified weapons program. The transition to human testing began in early 2077 when the military relocated the research to the high-security Mariposa Military Base under the oversight of Major Barnett. In this new environment, the scientists moved beyond animal subjects and began the systematic infection of human 'volunteers' by submerging them in massive vats filled with a green, viscous concentrated form of the Forced Evolutionary Virus. These experiments quickly produced the first successful Super Mutants, but the process was plagued by varying results in intelligence and the complete loss of reproductive capabilities. As the project progressed through the summer of 2077, the security detail at the base, led by Captain Roger Maxson, grew increasingly suspicious of the horrific biological mutations they were witnessing. Tensions reached a breaking point in October when Maxson discovered the full extent of the human experimentation, leading him to execute the lead scientists and declare the base's secession from the United States government. This revolt concluded just days before the Great War devastated the planet, leaving the virus and its mutated subjects sealed within the reinforced bunkers of Mariposa while the rest of the world burned.
