Biography
Faiza Hussain
She was working triage in London during the Skrull Invasion, doing her best to keep people alive in the middle of the conflict. Her base of operations was attacked by a Skrull war machine, but Dane Whitman the Black Knight intervened where he killed the war machine's pilot, and sent the machine itself crashing to the ground. Dane scouted the area to see if there were any survivors, and then brought Faiza along to check them out. While they were checking on survivors near the downed war machine, one of its devices came to life, blasting Faiza and knocking her out cold. (Captain Britain and MI-13 v1 #1) While Faiza was unconscious, she dreamed of King Arthur's fabled sword, Excalibur. When Dane returned to check on her, having gotten the survivors to safety, Faiza came around. Panicked at the figure looming over her, she accidentally triggered her powers for the first time, turning Dane into a living cross-section. Faiza quickly pulled herself together, and figured out how to revoke her power, returning Dane to normal. Moments later, Faiza and Dane were attacked by further Skrull troops. Dane killed a number of Skrulls, but Faiza ended the battle using another new power, the ability to immobilize other people, to paralyze the rest. (Captain Britain and MI-13 v1 #2) After Captain Britain resurrected and defeated the Skrulls using Excalibur, Faiza took the sword from the stone where Captain Britain left it after his victory and became the new master of Excalibur. (Captain Britain and MI-13 v1 #4) It was then that she joined MI-13 where she served as the Black Knight's steward. (Captain Britain and MI-13 v1 #5)
When Dracula attacked the United Kingdom he personally attacked Faiza's family, injuring her mother while kidnapping her father and sending forces to attack the members of MI:13. In the aftermath of the attack, Pete Wisdom deduced that attack's aim was to keep Faiza and Excalibur out of the battle. He gives Faiza the codename 'Excalibur' because he wants Dracula and his forces to hear and know that the mythical blade is still an active part of MI:13. (Captain Britain and MI-13 v1 #11)
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Faiza Hussain was a young British-Pakistani woman of slender build with medium-brown skin, dark eyes, and long black hair typically worn tucked under a hijab during her appearances. Her attire reflected both practicality and identity—often consisting of professional medical clothing or her MI:13 field uniform. When wielding Excalibur, she wore a suit of enchanted armor resembling modern tactical gear blended with Arthurian design. (Captain Britain and MI:13 v1 #4) Pete Wisdom was responsible for giving her the alias of Excalibur. (Captain Britain and MI-13 v1 #11)
In personality, Faiza was compassionate, curious, and idealistic, defined by her unwavering belief in the value of human life. Her background as a doctor shaped her worldview, grounding her actions in empathy and ethics even when confronted with magic or violence. She possessed a keen intellect and a calm demeanor, preferring dialogue and understanding before resorting to force. Though humble and self-effacing, Faiza displayed deep inner strength and courage when faced with cosmic and supernatural threats. Her optimism and kindness made her a stabilizing presence among her teammates, while her faith and morality guided her through moral and existential challenges that came with her new role. (Captain Britain and MI:13 #10)
Powers and abilities
Faiza Hussain was an ordinary human and thus had no superhuman powers or enhancements. As such, she had all the basic traits of a human being. However, after being struck by Skrull energy during the invasion, she developed the ability to manipulate the structure of living organisms at an anatomical level. This power allowed her to 'disassemble' and 'reassemble' biological beings non-lethally, effectively granting her the power of surgical dissection without harm—an extension of her medical intuition manifested as a superhuman gift. Combined with her wielding of Excalibur, which granted her enhanced durability and mystical protection, Faiza became a unique hybrid of healer and warrior. In combat, she relied on Excalibur’s power, her quick intellect, and her precise understanding of anatomy. Her medical expertise and supernatural gift made her one of the most extraordinary physician-heroes in the Marvel Universe, capable of both saving and defending life with equal mastery. (Captain Britain and MI:13 v1 #5)
After being hit with an alien weapon during the Skrull invasion of Earth, Dr. Faiza Hussain awoke with strange new powers. She gained the power to manipulate, assemble, and disassemble anything on an atomic level. She can disassemble a living body into its component parts while keeping the subject alive. She stopped a horde of Skrulls by preventing their bodies from moving with her powers. (Captain Britain and MI-13 v1 #2) She was seen to use these powers not only on living organisms, but also on other kinds of materials. (Captain Britain and MI-13 v1 #4) The extent and classification of these powers are yet to be revealed but the Black Knight described them as being purely defensive. (Captain Britain and MI-13 v1 #5)
Notes
- Faiza Hussain was created by Paul Cornell and Leonard Kirk where she made her first appearance in Captain Britain and MI: 13 v1 #1 (May, 2008).
- On CBR, Cornell commented in X-Position that, "She can safely open up a body, see what's wrong with it, and sort it out on a subatomic level. This has the incidental effect of halting shape-changers like Skrulls in their tracks (and anyone else who knows what's good for them). She has trouble doing this to magic beings."
Alternate Versions
- In Avengers Assemble v2 #15AU (2013), an alternate version of Faiza Hussain appeared in the Age of Ultron reality set on Earth-61112 in the Multiverse. Faiza Hussain was present alongside her fellow MI13 teammates Captain Britain and the Black Knight when Ultron's forces invaded the United Kingdom. With the help of Captain Marvel, they devised a plan to use the abilities of Computer Graham, who can go inside the virtual world of games and machines in hopes that he might be able to shut down Ultron from the inside. Faiza stayed behind to help heal the injured with her regenerative powers. Back in the sick room, Brian dubbed Faiza as the new Captain Britain, saying that if he may die in the fight against Ultron, that the Captain Britain mantle must live on through her. Dane stayed by her side to help out the injured. Even though they were successful, everyone was lost in the battle, which included Braddock Academy student Melanie Kapoor. Back at the British Museum, Dane asked if they are okay, and Faiza replied that they weren't, and that they will need to continue the fight for them.
