History

Factor Three were a team of supervillains gathered together by the mysterious Mutant Master. In reality, the individual was actually a member of an alien species who crafted a disguise in order to appear human. The Sirian attempted to conquer Earth by manipulating humanity into a nuclear world war. (X-Men v1 #37) Under this guise, he claimed to be a Mutant looking for his kind to conquer the world. At some point, they came to capture and brainwash the Mutant Banshee who was made into one of their number. Alongside the Ogre, the pair were sent after the X-Men in an attempt to kidnap Professor X. The fledgling superheroes thwarted their attempts where they came to capture the Ogre, and freed Banshee from Factor Three's control. (X-Men v1 #28)

Later, Factor Three freed the supervillain Juggernaut when the Professor attempted to cure his step-brother of being a villain. The resulting experiment of both science and sorcery ended with the Juggernaut's revival and the Professor near the brink of death. Factor Three mentally contacted the Juggernaut and tried to get him to join their group. (X-Men v1 #32) The X-Men ultimately were only able to stop the Juggernaut with the aid of Doctor Strange who helped force Marko into the Crimson Cosmos. The event ultimately provided a distraction for the X-Men whilst a second attempt was made to kidnap Professor X where Factor Three succeeded on this occasion. (X-Men v1 #33)

With the help of Banshee, the X-Men were able to locate Factor Three's hidden base within the Alps, but were captured during the rescue attempt. Finally meeting the Mutant Master himself, along with his full array of henchmen, their plan was unveiled. They intended to cause nuclear war between the US and the Soviet Union, which would wipe out the human race.

The X-Men were able to escape the mountain base just before Mutant Master blew it up, and again thwarted their plans. Factor Three relocated to an alternate base, where Changeling, Mutant Master's second in command, discovered his plans to destroy mutantkind as well as humankind. Changeling freed Professor X and Banshee, who inadvertently destroyed the Mutant Master's cloaking device, revealing his alien appearance. The X-Men and the remainder of Factor Three joined forces in attacking Mutant Master, who committed suicide to avoid capture. With Mutant Master dead, Factor Three ceased to exist. (X-Men v1 #39)
