Biography
Enji Todoroki (Japanese: 轟 炎司, Hepburn: Todoroki Enji) was a male human born on Earth during an age where Quirks began to develop in mankind and provided people with superpowers. Developing his own power, he came to find that he could manipulate flames to achieve a variety of effects. From a young age, he came to desire to be the top ranked hero in Japan and dedicated his life towards this goal as the hero Endeavor. This saw him reaching the position of #2 when he was 20 years old but he failed to reached the top-ranked spot that was held by All Might who was beloved by the people. In time, he came to see the gap between himself and All Might as being too big to the point that he began to lose hope in overcoming his rival who he feared and respected as a result. To overcome All Might, he decided to conceive a child who could become more powerful than him and have a Quirk that would offset Enji's own weakness. As such, he decided to settle for a Quirk Marriage where he negotiated with the Himura family to marry their daughter Rei Himura who had an ice Quirk.
Despite being an arranged marriage, Enji really did have feelings for Rei, and so the first few years went well. When he was twenty-two years old, their first son Toya was born with a fire Quirk that was even more powerful than Enji's Hellflame Quirk. Despite not inheriting his mother's ice Quirk to overcome the downside of overheating, he still planned on raising him to be a hero. He still sought a child who would inherit the Quirks of fire and ice, and Rei wanted more children, believing they could encourage each other, which ultimately led to Fuyumi's birth. Sadly, she only inherited Rei's ice Quirk, but he was still happy either way, because he felt that since Toya had more potential, he could place all his ambitions on him. Enji began Quirk training with Toya, who was in turn eager to learn from his father and follow in his footsteps. However, his plans were cut short when Toya's flames began to burn him. Enji and Rei went to Central Hospital, where the doctor revealed that Toya had inherited his mother's resistance to cold temperatures rather than his father's durability to heat, which therefore gave his body improper resistance to his own flames and would cause his Quirk to easily burn him should he abuse it. While deeply disappointed, Enji stopped Toya's training in concern for his wellbeing, but Toya himself refused to quit, becoming just as stubborn as his father to become the next top Hero.
Endeavor comes up in a conversation between fans about how his son was participating in the U.A. Sports Festival. Shoto mentioned Endeavor as his 'old man' when he wishes to display his ice power on stronger foes than the giant robot villains. When the Cavalry Battle begins, Endeavor watches furiously from the bleachers as Shoto tells his team that he never uses his left side in combat. Endeavor continues watching the Sports Festival while Shoto and his team battle Team Midoriya for the ten million points that would win the Cavalry Battle. He notes that Izuku Midoriya is exploiting Shoto's weakness by keeping to his left side, and says Shoto is foolish for allowing his opponent to do so. During the intermission following the Cavalry battle, All Might greets Endeavor in a stairwell. All Might says that they have not spoken to each other in ten years and he wants to catch up. Endeavor angrily tells him to get lost and to stop acting like old friends. As Endeavor leaves, All Might says that Shoto was able to perform well using half his power and asks for advice on how to raise the next generation of heroes. Endeavor dismissed his request and states Shoto will be a hero that will surpass All Might even though he is going through his rebellious phase. He walks away after disconcerting All Might by saying it is the reason he 'created' Shoto. Prior to the final round, Endeavor confronts Shoto before his match with Hanta Sero. He berates his son, telling Shoto that he could have easily taken first in the first and second rounds of the festival had he used his flames. Endeavor reminds Shoto that his purpose is to surpass All Might and that unlike his siblings, Shoto is his greatest masterpiece. This only angers Shoto, who replies that he will not give Endeavor the satisfaction and only use his mother's Quirk. As Shoto excuses himself, Endeavor tells him that even if that works for the festival, Shoto will eventually find the limits of that power.
Endeavor encounters Izuku on his way to face Shoto in the second round of the finals. He tells Izuku he was impressed with his performance against 'the brainwashing guy' and notes his Quirk is similar to All Might's. As Izuku tried to excuse himself, Endeavor tells him that Shoto has a duty to usurp All Might and this next match will prove to be an excellent benchmark. He asks Izuku to hit Shoto hard, and to do his best not to disgrace either of them. He apologizes for interrupting Izuku and prepares to leave, but is halted when Izuku stated he was not All Might. Izuku goes on to say that Shoto may be his son, but he was not Endeavor. Endeavor is slightly annoyed, and goes to the tournament arena to watch the match. Once Shoto finally ignites his flames during his battle with Izuku, Endeavor explodes with wicked excitement and satisfaction. He is ecstatic to see his son has decided to use his left side and approaches the edge of the stands, shouting, proudly that Shoto will fulfill his ambitions. Afterwards, Endeavor meets Shoto in the corridor. He tells Shoto that he needs to gain more control of his fire, and that he is proud of him for using it at all. Endeavor goes on to say that after he graduates, he will allow Shoto to work alongside him. However, Shoto says that he cannot change so easily and has not rescinded his disavowal of him. Shoto states that the only reason he used his fire power was because for a split second, he completely forgot about Endeavor, and then walks away saying that perhaps he no longer needs his father. Endeavor watches begrudgingly as Shoto defeats Tenya using only his ice, pondering why Shoto feels the need to keep holding back.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Enji Todoroki was a tall man with a sturdily built and muscular physique and had short spiky crimson hair along with sharp turquoise eyes. Upon becoming a hero, he ended up taking the name of Flame Hero: Endeavor (フレイムヒーロー エンデヴァー Fureimu Hīrō Endevā?) (エンデヴァー, Endevā).
According to his son Shoto, Endeavor was a prideful and ambitious man who was driven by his goal which was surpassing the No. 1 Hero, All Might.
Enji has always been aware of his limitations, but due to his stubbornness, he never once considered relinquishing his wish, wanting to accomplish it at any cost and even passing on his aspirations to another person if necessary. As a way to balance the downsides of his Quirk, something he always found cumbersome, Enji sought to have a child with an ice Quirk user to create someone that could inherit his will and conceive a child who had the perfect mix of both fire and ice. This way, Enji would not only have his Quirk inherited but also his training and experiences by a 'perfect' successor.
This obsessive drive to surpass All Might in strength and power has followed Enji throughout his entire life, and repeated failure has plagued him since his youth. Dedicated to his studies and hero work, Enji strived to become the absolute strongest Pro Hero in the country. However, the figure of All Might proved itself too much of an insurmountable obstacle for him or anyone else to overcome, leaving Enji in a growing state of despair as he became increasingly aware that closing the gap between him and the Symbol of Peace was futile. As a result, Enji turned into a cold, callous person who didn't care for anything but his impossible dream, something a young Inasa Yoarashi would notice by just looking at his eyes.
Enji would become a cold, even abusive father and husband, with his actions negatively affecting all members of the family he formed. Shoto, his youngest child, was considered his masterpiece, a tool with all the correct elements to exceed All Might's ability and nothing else. As a result, Enji focused all his hopes on Shoto, forcing him through incredibly harsh training from a young age and showing no concern for his son's desires. The rest of his children were ignored and perceived as 'failures' that were not allowed to interact with their younger brother. Enji became verbally and physically violent towards his wife, Rei, whenever she tried to defend Shoto from the brutal training, to the extent where she began to fear him and started seeing him in the faces of their children. When his wife succumbed to a mental breakdown and injured Shoto, Enji sent her to a psychiatric ward to prevent her from getting in the way of his child's development.
He was married to Rei Todoroki which was the result of a Quirk marriage. It was said that one of the reasons for his Quirk marriage was to produce a child that could address his overheating issue from the use of his ability. The couple had four children together with these being their eldest son Toya Todoroki, their daughter Fuyumi Todoroki, their other son Natsuo Todoroki and their youngest son Shoto Todoroki.
Despite his cruel treatment of his family, he was shown to had cared for them as he remembered his wife's favourite flowers and often left them in her room without her noticing him.
Initially, he was determined in closing the gap between himself and All-Might where he intended to replace him as the No. 1 hero in Japan. However, he quickly came to realise that the gap between the pair was simply too big and that he could never outdo All-Might.
Powers and abilities
Endeavor was ranked 2nd of Japan's heroes before taking the spot of No. 1 after All Might's retirement. He is known for having the most solved cases out of any crime fighter, and by the age of 20, Endeavor took his place as the No. 2 Pro Hero. He also possesses a professional handle on his powerful Quirk, Hellflame, using his flames to overwhelm his opponents with extreme heat, becoming airborne with flame propulsion, among other applications. As he is ranked highly, Endeavor is a mighty hero, which has been proven in his fight against the League of Villains. He has repeatedly faced and defeated multiple grades of Nomu without sustaining any damage, something for which he is praised by the likes of All For One, history's most dangerous and experienced villain. During the Kamino Incident, Endeavor teamed up with Edgeshot to temporarily battle All For One, and emerge unscathed. Endeavor has also displayed the ability to contend with High-End Nomu such as Hood and Woman with help from other heroes. In the previous bout with Hood, Endeavor displayed his high speed and power by dicing a large portion of a skyscraper before it could collapse and incinerating most of Hood's body thrice. In the Paranormal Liberation War, Endeavor proved to be integral against the 75% body-enhanced Tomura Shigaraki, inflicting the most amount of damage that caused the villain's body to eventually break down, despite the Flame Hero being outmatched by Tomura. Shoto even remarked that Endeavor was the only one, besides Izuku who was the only hero who could defeat Tomura, with any hope to defeat All For One. He later proved this to be accurate, as with assistance from Hawks, he overwhelmed and would have incinerated the Demon Lord had it not been for his acquisition of the reverse-engineered Quirk-Destroying Drug.
He had an extraordinary level of intelligence that led to his tally of having resolving many criminal cases. Enji had demonstrated a very keen set of deductive skills such as him remarking how Izuku Midoriya's Quirk was similar to All-Might's.
Possessing a Quirk, he had the ability Hellflame (ヘルフレイム Herufureimu?) which allowed him to produce and manipulate large amounts of extremely intense fire at will. Through training, he obtained incredible physical strength making him a strong combatant.
He had limited flight capabilities by generating intense flames from his feet to keep him in the air. According to Enji, he imply had the ability of not falling though more intense burns could propel him fast in the air.
With his power, he developed a number of techniques that included:
- Flashfire Fist (赫灼熱拳 Kaku Shakunekken?) : a signature move whereby Endeavor raised his fire's temperature until it reached its highest and with his power at maximum he unleashed it as a devastating flame attack or even used it to increase his speed dramatically.
- Flashfire Fist - Jet Burn (赫灼熱拳 ジェットバーン Kaku Shakunekken Jettobān?) : an attack that generated a powerful blast of flame at his target.
- Flashfire Fist - Hell Spider (赫灼熱拳 ヘルスパイダー Kaku Shakunekken Heru Supaidā?) : Endeavor generated long thin blasts of fire from his fingers that he could use to cut through his targets. Enji could use this technique to slice the top half of a skyscraper and cut it into pieces.
- Flashfire Fist - Hell's Curtain (ヘル カーテイン Heru Kātein?) : Enji threw his fists back where he concentrated intense flames at a single point that he shot out when he moved his hands forward with this blanketing his enemy in fire.
- Karmic Raze - Hellfire Storm (業火ごうか燎原りょうげんヘルファイアストーム Gōka Ryōgen Herufaiasutōmu?) : a powerful flaming whirlwind that burnt enemies within range of it.
- Raging Assault - Hell Minefield (烈れっ火か蹂じゅう躙りんヘルマインフィールド Rekka Jūrin Herumainfīrudo?) :
- Vanishing Fist (バニシングフィスト Banishingu Fisuto?) :
- Prominence Burn (プロミネンスバーン Purominensu Bān?) : an attack that allowed Endeavor to generate a massive concentrated beam of fire from his entire body that was capable of vaporising a target.
- Ignited Arrow (イグナイテッドアロー Igunaiteddo Arō?) :
A disadvantage of his Quirk was that the intense heat burnt him out quickly which meant he could not generate his flames over a long period.
After becoming a Pro Hero, he came to possess his own hero office that was known as the Endeavor Agency (エンデバー事務所 Endebā jimusho?).
