Biography
Origin
Marius St. Croix
One day, his sisters were out with their father whilst Marius was at home with their mother. During this time, he experienced incredibly debilitating pain as his mutation first began to manifest and he felt an overwhelming hunger. He came to find that this could only be satiated by feeding on the marrow of Mutants with one of his first victims being his own mother. (Generation X v1 #58)
He came to use his abilities to go to another dimension where he attained great power. Seeking to rule it, he wanted the power of his sister Monet to help him take over that realm. This saw him appearing in his family home of Monaco before his sisters where he asked Monet to join him and from their new power base he intended to return to conquer Earth. Monet though simply mocked her brother on his gruesome appearance and in his anger he lashed out at her causing him to turn her body into a red-skinned humanoid creature. In this form, he came to name her as Penance which was to be Monet's punishment for her treatment of him. The M-Twins then arrived to confront him where they banished him from their household and carved a symbol to send their brother back to his dimension. However, he took Penance with him where he revealed that the creature was originally Monet who was now lost to the world. (Generation X v1 #40)
Travelling between dimensions was not easy for Emplate as it took a huge toll on him both mentally and physically. His skin was torn to shreds, with layer and layer of scar tissue building up until he was barely recognizable as human anymore. More seriously though was the fact that his lungs were so damaged that he needed a respirator permanently attached to his face to allow him to breathe clearly. Thankfully, his food source was sorted out, as he chained the transfigured Monet up in a dungeon and fed off her bone marrow regularly. Along the way, Emplate acquired a short creature called D.O.A. who acted as his minion. Despite the pain it caused him, Emplate still travelled to Earth to feast on mutant marrow and that’s when he first ran afoul of Generation X, a training squad of young mutants. Tracking a young man named Jonathon Starsmore to an airport in the U.S., Emplate waited for his prey to appear. Emplate had discovered he could slightly phase out of this dimension, making it so he could watch everything that was happening but not be seen, heard, or touched by anyone else. Emplate struck when he spotted Jonathon and began using his vampiric touch to siphon off energy from the powerful young mutant. He was caught off-guard though by some of Generation X who had come to the airport to fetch Starsmore. Still, he proved to be a powerful opponent and fought off the team, but was surprised when even more of them showed up, including his sister 'Monet', now codenamed M. Deciding to quit while he was ahead, Emplate phased out of dimensional synch again, but not before leaving the team a chilling warning that he was going to eat them no matter where they ran to. Making it back to his other-worldly base, Emplate was drained from the fight but, when he went to feed on Monet, he discovered she was missing from her cell. Unbeknownst to him, the portal-creating mutant Gateway had teleported her to Generation X’s school so she could be with her sisters, who were still disguised as Monet. The real Monet was nicknamed Penance by the students, as that was the single word Gateway spoke when he dropped her off. (Generation X v1 #1)
It was later revealed that Emplate had used his powers on Synch and made the Mutant just like him. Synch struggled to contain the vampiric urges as well as Emplate’s influence, and it was only thanks to Monet that he was saved and the changes were purged from his system. (Generation X v1 #15) Sometime later, Emplate visited Monet and begged her to help him break free of the dimension to which he was forced to retreat all the time. She refused to help and so he showed her images of thousands of hands tearing at his soul. She was shocked to see how much pain he was truly in and he begged her to find someone to replace him and go to the dimension in his stead. Unable to stay in Earth's reality any longer he faded away, leaving Monet to wonder what he meant. [Generation X v1 #24)

Decimation
Emplate reappeared on the former site of the Xavier Institute, where he killed a few construction workers currently working in the area. He later reappeared on Utopia and after watching Madison Jeffries and Danger he came to attacks the pair. After taking out Danger, he managed to get a sample Jeffries until the X-Men arrived. Emplate managed to defeat them whereupon he faded back to his reality. Whilst there, it was revealed to D.O.A. that Penance was no longer with the X-Men but from the information he gathered from Jeffries he decided to set his sights on Bling!. Alternate Versions
- In Tales from the Age of Apocalypse: Sinister Bloodlines v1 #1 (1998), an alternate version of Emplate was shown to exist in the Age of Apocalypse set on Earth-295 in the Multiverse. On this world, Emplate was a member of Sinister's Elite Mutant Force alongside his sisters the Monet Twins who were under Marius's control. When Christopher Summers, father of Prelates Cyclops and Havok, escaped from the slave pens threatening to spread a Brood infestation due to the fact that he was infected with a Brood Queen embryo, the EMF was dispatched to bring him back in. Emplate and his sisters tracked Christopher to Joe Robertson's Daily Bugle office. When examining Robertson's body, Emplate noted that it was seemingly dead, but somehow still alive. In reality, it was infected with a Brood embryo. Emplate and the St. Croix twins were ambushed by Christopher Summers who killed Emplate by shooting him point blank in the chest. Watching their older brother get killed placed the St. Croix twins into a catatonic state. After Weapon X volunteered to become the new Apocalypse to spare the world the judgement of the Celestials, he started resurrecting formerly deceased mutants, among them Emplate. Emplate was made Weapon Omega's new Minister of Pestilence. After receiving word that Jean Grey and a member of the human resistance were hiding in the city, Emplate, Cyclops, and a squadron of soldiers attempted to bring them in. Emplate nearly captured them but was incapacitated by an explosion.
