History

The Elder Dragons arose millennia ago, long before the rise of modern nations, during an era defined by a relentless rhythm of magical consumption known as the Feast and Famine. The Elder Dragons functioned as primordial forces of nature that periodically awoke to sate an insatiable hunger for the world's ambient magic, effectively stripping the land of its supernatural essence before returning to a centuries-long hibernation. During the previous awakening over 10,000 years prior to the current era, these leviathans systematically hunted the Great Giants, such as the Giganticus Lupicus, driving them to total extinction and leaving behind a world devoid of high magic. The sentient races of that time—including the Mursaat, Forgotten, Seers, Jotun, and Dwarves—witnessed the devastating power of these entities and desperately sought ways to survive the inevitable collapse of their civilisations. While the Mursaat phased out of the physical plane to escape, the Seers and Forgotten worked together to preserve what little magic remained by sealing it within the Bloodstones, effectively hiding the 'food source' from the dragons to starve them back into slumber. This era established the foundational mythos of The All, the cosmic balance in which each dragon served as a pillar or 'cog' in a machine that regulated the flow of magic across Tyria, ensuring that while the dragons brought destruction, they also prevented the world from being torn apart by the very energy they consumed.

Overview

In appearance, the Elder Dragons were gargantuan, otherworldly behemoths that transcended the traditional biology of common drakes, each manifesting as a physical embodiment of the specific primal domains they commanded. These behemoths were so massive that their very presence reshaped the horizon, with hides composed of the primal elements they commanded, such as jagged volcanic rock, translucent glacial ice, or dense, prehistoric flora. Their physical forms served as the focal point for the magical corruption they bled into the environment, causing the land and sky around them to warp into a reflection of their own singular essence. Unlike smaller winged reptiles, these titans possessed multiple sets of limbs, tattered or crystalline wings that could blot out the sun, and eyes that glowed with a cold, ancient intelligence. Their bodies functioned as conduits for cosmic energy, making them appear less like creatures and more like sentient forces of nature that had clawed their way out of the earth to reclaim the world's magic.
