History
Demogorgons were predatory creatures that were native to an alternate dimension known as the Upside Down. They were shown as being part of the hive mind of the intelligence that controlled that realm with them being extensions of the Mindflayer.
As a hunter lured by the scent of blood, the creature stalked the woodlands surrounding Mirkwood. It managed to drag a wounded deer into the Upside Down, where it was witnessed by Nancy Wheeler, who had entered through a temporary rift in a tree. Upon detecting her presence, the beast pursued her through the necrotic environment until she escaped back to the Right Side Up. The Demogorgon was eventually drawn to Hawkins Middle School by a large amount of spilled blood, where it engaged in a spree of violence before being disintegrated by the psychic power of the very subject who had first made contact with it. (Episode: The Monster)
In 1985, another Demogorgon was kept in a Soviet gulag where it was used to devour political prisoners.
Overview
In appearance, the Demogorgon was a towering, bipedal humanoid that stood between six and ten feet tall with a lean, muscular frame and elongated limbs. Its hairless skin appeared slimy and pale, textured with a necrotic, fluid-covered sheen that matched the decaying environment of the Upside Down. The creature’s most distinct and nightmarish feature was its lack of a traditional face; in its place was a smooth, eyeless head that could unfurl into five large, fleshy "petals" to reveal a massive, gaping maw. This mouth was lined with thousands of needle-sharp teeth, similar to those of a leatherback sea turtle, which it used to feed on prey like the deer seen in the woods. Its long arms terminated in large, three-fingered hands with razor-sharp talons, while its digitigrade legs ended in similar predatory claws. Despite having no visible eyes or nose, the beast demonstrated an acute ability to track its victims through dimensions, seemingly guided by the scent of blood or the vibrations of sound. (Episode: The Monster)
The organisms began began with the deposition of eggs or larvae within a host by a tentacle within the Upside Down. The slug-like larvae would later be vomited up by the host and subsequently escape into the wild. After this, the larvae underwent a period of rapid metamorphosis where moulting through each phase of their development until emerging as an adult. The process was shown to takes place over the span of a week for the newborn to reach adulthood.
The creatures were shown to possess six different stages to their life cycle:
- Stage One: Slug :
- Stage Two: Pollywog :
- Stage Three: Frogogorgon :
- Stage Four: Catogorgon :
- Stage Fix: Demodog :
- Stage Six: Demogorgon :
