History

De Vermis Mysteriis (Latin: The Mysteries of the Worm) was an evil book written in the 16th century by Ludvig Prinn, an alchemist and necromancer who claimed to have lived for 500 years, studied the black arts and supposedly had invisible companions and demon servants, until he was arrested by witch-hunters. He wrote the evil book in the dungeon where he awaited for his death at the stake. (Journey Into Mystery v2 #3)

Overview

In appearance, the De Vermis Mysteriis had arrived as a small, unassuming tome when first seen, its once-black cover now cracked and mottled with age. The binding appeared leathery yet oddly organic, stretched tight across warped boards splotched with fungal green. Intricate runes and occult sigils were etched along its spine, their shapes unfamiliar and ever so slightly raised—almost pulsing under one's gaze. The pages within looked brittle and human-cut, their edges uneven as if torn from different notebooks and stitched together by hand. Each page was crowded with dense handwriting, portioned into block text and interspersed with diagrams of starved wormlike creatures, arcane seals, and concentric patterns. Even when placed on a calm study desk, it emitted an aura of distortion—candles nearest it flickered independently, and whispers at the edge of hearing echoed for those sensitive to the occult. It held the tangible weight of malignant intent in its every fibre. (Journey Into Mystery v2 #3)

The De Vermis Mysteriis was not merely a record of forbidden lore but an instrument of ancient evil. Born from the writings of the Flemish sorcerer Ludvig Prinn, it contained rituals for summoning extradimensional beings—among them the Shambler from the Stars, a creature of writhing limbs and insatiable hunger for mortal souls. The included incantations allowed readers to break the boundaries of reality, calling forth entities whose forms defied geometry and whose motives lay entirely outside human understanding. Even reciting a single name could shift perception, but entire rituals warped the fabric of reality—opening gateways for shapeless horrors to walk the earth. The book was semi-sentient; it responded to the fear and curiosity of its reader, adjusting sigils or amplifying spells in reaction to their intent. Any who dared consult its passages risked not merely their sanity, but the integrity of existence itself—the De Vermis Mysteriis was both grimoire and doorway to nightmares. It seemingly included indications about the Philosopher's Stone and its location. (King in Black: Namor v1 #2)
