Biography
Dawn Moreno
She was 15 years old when she was enrolled at Springfield High and took part in Lacrosse where her skill brought her to the attention of Cobra Commander. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #226)
To ensure her loyalty, Cobra Commander had Dawn placed in the Brain-Wave Scanner where Doctor Mindbender was to impart Cobra indoctrination in Moreno's mind. The Baroness though believed this would damage the girl's natural talent and tried to tamper with the process. This inadvertently transferred the Arashikage ninja skills recorded in the machine after taking a copy of Snake Eyes mind. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #229) She then managed to escape the Cobra facility with Zartan dispatched to hunt her down but Dawn as able to turn the tables on him where she demanded to know the location of the Arashikage sword Morning Light. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #230) This saw her travelling to New York City to a museum that was showcasing the sword which she stole and claimed that it rightfully belonged to her with her easily escaping from the authorities. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #231) Staying on the streets, a person attempted to take advantage of her but she stole anything useful from him when she was confronted by Storm Shadow. She attempted to escape him but he caught with her where he asked for the sword be returned to him. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #232) Dawn Moreno was officially accepted into the circle led by Demon Granny and Ellen Bogen. She interacted with members of this group and was part of the discussions on Cobra leadership about whether Snake Eyes’s memories had been implanted in her. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #233)
Dawn began formal ninja-training under Demon Granny in Tokyo. She was given a 'female Snake Eyes' outfit as part of that training. She adopted that costume as part of her role emerging as the new Snake Eyes. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #244)
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Dawn Moreno was a female human of teenage years of Mexican-American background with an athletic build, living in Springfield, with a non-costumed civilian look when first introduced: normal clothing fitting a teenager in a small town, unarmoured, unmasked, no visible ninja gear. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #226) When she adopted the Snake Eyes persona, she wore a full ninja outfit (mask, uniform, weapons, the female Snake Eyes attire first shown under training by Demon Granny) that mirrored essential elements of the original Snake Eyes’s garb. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #244)
Dawn was shown to initially suffer from hubris and overconfidence. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #228)
She showed internal conflict and confusion due to the memories she did not originate having been implanted in her mind. She reacted with a mixture of fear, curiosity, and resolve: afraid of losing her sense of self, curious about the nature of Snake Eyes’s memories, and resolved to train and understand her new circumstances. She was quiet, introspective, often tentative in action but growing more assertive as she became more involved in the ninja training.
Powers and abilities
Dawn Moreno was born an ordinary human with athletic talent: she was a gifted high school athlete with strong physicality (speed, agility, coordination) that caught the attention of Cobra Commanders. She had no superhuman powers originally.
Moreno was said to be a fast learner. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #228)
She was shown as being fast and limber allowing her to quickly pounce on her target. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #227) Her speed was remarkable as she was able to outrun pursuers. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #231) Dawn was a skilled martial artist and was able to wield a blade in combat. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #227) It was shown that she was skilled enough to grab a blade in mid-air. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #228)
Dawn initially underwent training at the hands of the Baroness. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #228) It was said that she knew how to avoid surveillance. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #230)
Her special skills were gained via training in ninjutsu under the Arashikage clan Storm Shadow and Demon Granny and via the mental implantation of memories of the original Snake Eyes. These implanted memories gave her knowledge of Snake Eyes’s past, combat style, and reflexes beyond what she had purely learned as a civilian.
Whilst with Cobra, she was accidentally implanted with the Arashikage knowledge and ninja techniques learnt by Snake Eyes with these having been recorded in the Brain-Wave Scanner. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #229) Thus, her already formidable skills were augmented with the memories of Snake Eyes. This included secret Arashikage techniques that only the highest of masters could attempt to use. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #230)
A noted item she gained possession was the Arashikage sword Morning Light that was forged by the smith Onihashi and was considered a masterpiece of metallurgical art. (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero v1 #231)
