Biography

Damon Ryder

At some point, Ryder developed a theory that there was an evolutionary link between dinosaurs and man. Thus, he began to engage in research work to explain this missing gap by attempting to engineer a human/dinosaur hybrid through recombinant methods. At the university, Doctor Ryder came to hear about Ben Reilly who Professor Epstein had praised. Later on, Damon would apply for a lab assistant position where he would work with Reilly after his previous aide had left. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #608)

Afterwards, the two came to be close friends though despite that Damon knew very little about Ben's life. He did not notice that Reilly seemingly had no family or other friends. To that end, he invited Ben to his home to meet his wife and children as they had heard so much about Reilly. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #608)

Whilst drunk, Ryder and Reilly continued talking about their research work. There came to be worries regarding the funding of their research though Damon believed that Ben had solved the research problem in batch 896. Ryder then decided to use this to help engineer the world's first human/dinosaur hybrid. In reality though, Ryder was looking not to grow such a creature but rather insert the recombinant DNA into an already living test subject namely himself. The next day, Ben re-examined their findings and discovered what Damon had been doing and confronted him on the matter. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #608)

Later on, he decided to confront 'Ben' at the Front Line offices. However, the person claimed that Damon had the wrong person. Despite that, Ryder refused to listen despite 'Ben' being identified as Peter Parker. Instead, he decided to press on at his plan at revenge which involved tearing 'Ben's' life apart piece by piece starting with his loved ones. He then showed a picture of Aunt May causing 'Ben' to lash out at him leading to a brief fight between the pair that was only stopped by office staff. At first, Damon was ready to leave but promised that they would meet again and also showed a picture of another 'Ben' in the Portland newspaper. Before he could leave, he was confronted by Norah Winters but he threatened her after which he left the building. The next day, he orchestrated events so that 'Ben' would confront Kaine whilst Ryder himself would target 'Reilly's' friends starting with his roommate Michele Gonzales. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #608)

Overview

Personality and attributes

Damon Ryder was married with him having a wife named Laura Ryder. The couple had children from their marriage. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #608)

Whilst being a researcher, he came to meet Ben Reilly who was a fellow member at the university. The two eventually came to bond with Damon wanting them to be more than lab partners and instead be friends. Despite that, he knew very little about Reilly or his personal life. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #608)

He had waited long for Ben Reilly to resurface in order for him to enact his revenge. As a result, Ryder was shown to suffer from a bit of impatience leading to him act prematurely. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #608)

Powers and abilities

Originally, Damon Ryder was an ordinary human being with no inherent special abilities. By adulthood, he became a scientist who specialised in genetics. He had theorised the existence of an evolutionary mutation that accounted for a gap within the fossil records thus highlighting a missing link between mankind and dinosaurs. The theory was that dinosaurs did not go simply extinct but merely evolved out of existence. In fact, he argued that dinosaurs had partly evolved into mankind in an evolutionary sense. His research had involved in bridging this gap by engineering it within laboratory settings using recombinant methods. Such a view was regarded as a fringe theory that was difficult to prove. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #608)
